Three signs belong to each element – one cardinal, one fixed and one mutable.
There’s a table provided (Table of Elements) as a starting point for working out your
elemental balance. If you have a high count in a particular element, you should find
that you can identify with the concepts and keynotes for that element. But you may
find that having only one planet in a particular element (that’s not including the angles =
Asc/Mc) means this element ‘shouts’ to be heard at times, and, according to Carl Jung,
our ‘inferior’ element is the one which we can use out there in the big, wide world –
once we’ve integrated it, of course!
FIRE
Corresponds to Carl Jung’s intuitive type. (Unaware) Knowing or ‘imagining’ where
what is perceived comes from and/or how it will develop (as a possibility). In doing so,
the object, as such, is often not even experienced with awareness. This is a kind of
‘grasping’ or ‘seeing’ of backgrounds. This is why Jung called it intuition, which is not
the same as the astrological Uranus. The intuitive type is always in search of
possibilities, backgrounds and space. (KAREN HAMAKER-ZONDAG)
Fire is: Yang, subjective, hot, dry, mobile, sharp, light, clear, adventurous, enthusiastic,
creative, radiant, angry, visionary.
Excessive fire can become angry, violent, cause irritations (skin, etc.), restlessness,
aggression, cuts and wounds, fevers, ‘burn-out’.
Depleted fire can become despondent, cause poor digestion, feeling cold, lack of lustre,
lack of resistance to infection, diabetes, toxicity.
Salty, Pungent and Sour Tastes increase fire (see separate sheet for more information)

impatient = rules head and face, cerebral system and adrenals = the tissue salt, Kali Phos

self vs. self-indulgence = rules thighs, sciatic nerve, liver and hepatic system = the tissue
salt, Silicea = the Bach Flower, Agrimony = the note, F = Beethoven was born with sun ª
in Sagittarius É = this sign is ruled by the planet, Jupiter ¯ (healing colour: yellow)
EARTH
Corresponds to Carl Jung’s sensate type. Accepting something as it is and looking at
how it is, for example: hard, sharp, warm, etc. Perception is primary. Considering
anything not perceivable with the senses offers no handle for this way of seeing things,
for this type is focused on the security of the concrete world and of the here and now;
the future obviously cannot be grasped. (KAREN HAMAKER-ZONDAG)
Earth is: Yin, objective, dry, cold, hard, gross, heavy, stable, dark, rough, slow, loyal,
practical, materialistic, concerned with survival and security, ‘grounded’.
Excessive earth can become sluggish, lethargic, inactive, heavy, dense, materialistic, self-
satisfied, can sleep too much, be slow to perceive new ideas, inflexible, resistant to
change, has to process fully before acting.
Depleted earth can lack ability to manifest, have no connection between potential and
actual, fail to see what betrays aspiration, be unstable, unsound and unable to enlist
others’ support.
Earth’s ‘defences’ in Freudian terms are Anal. They seek to control, like to get
everything right (LIZ GREENE)
Sweet, Sour and Astringent Tastes increase earth (see separate sheet for more
information)
Taurus  = fixed earth = issues around values and resources = material security = rules
throat and neck, Eustachian tubes and Thyroid gland = the tissue salt, Nat Sulph = the

= rules digestion, intestines, abdomen and visceral system = the tissue salt, Kali Sulph =
the Bach Flower, Centaury = the note, C = Meyerbeer was born with sun ª in Virgo Æ =
this sign is ruled by the planet, Mercury ¬ (healing colour: purple)
AIR
Corresponds to Carl Jung’s thinking type. Asking what the thing perceived actually is
and how it can be classified in the current frame of reference. This type likes to look at
things theoretically and strictly logically. The actions of those around, as well as the
type’s own actions, are seen from logical reasoning, and everything is rationally thought
out and motivated as much as possible. (KAREN HAMAKER-ZONDAG)
Air is: Yang, objective, dry, cold, mobile, light, clear, fast, subtle, teaching, philosophy,
technology, computers, logic, intellect, ‘up in the air’, scientific.
Excessive air can become restless, nervous, jittery, impersonal, brittle, creaky, can cause
premature aging, difficulty being alone, difficulty falling asleep or sorting out
experiences.
Depleted air can cause slowness of movement, lack of perceptivity, cellular starvation,
lassitude, inability to organise, stagnation.
Air’s ‘defences’ according to Liz Greene are disengagement and dissociation. There’s a
Pungent, Bitter and Astringent Tastes increase air (see separate sheet for more
information)
Libra Ç = cardinal air = artistic mind = relationship = judgment in order to assess action
and reaction = able to see the other’s point of view = rules kidneys, lower back, renal
system and homeostasis = the tissue salt, Nat Phos = the Bach Flower, Scleranthus = the
note, D = Verdi was born with sun ª in Libra Ç = this sign is ruled by the planet, Venus
- (healing colour: bright green)
WATER
Corresponds to Carl Jung’s feeling type. Imagining and experiencing all that is evoked
by what is perceived, in the way of feelings of pleasure and displeasure, on the basis of
which something will be accepted or rejected. Emotional values are important. This
way of seeing also entails absorbing very subtle things of which this type is not
necessarily aware. A mood or intention will quickly be detected, and this becomes
part of weighing issues. (KAREN HAMAKER-ZONDAG)
Water is: Yin, subjective, cold, dull, wet, heavy, soft, smooth, cloudy, opinions,
sensitivity, caring, tears, ‘still waters run deep’.
Water’s ‘defences’ in Freudian terms are Oral. There’s a tendency towards possession,
an attempt to create a bond that will not alter, a tendency towards eroticism and
emotional fusion. A sense of trying to recreate the primal relationship. (LIZ GREENE)
Sweet, Salty and Sour Tastes increase water (see separate sheet for more information)
Cancer Ä = cardinal water = a stream rushing towards the sea = active feelings = rules
breasts, stomach, uterus, gallbladder and alimentary system = the tissue salt, Calc Fluor

having invested emotional energy in it = rules genitals, generative system, prostate
gland and rectum = the tissue salt, Calc Sulph = the Bach Flower, Chicory = the note, E =
