RHYTHMS AND RITUALS: PANGASINAN FESTIVAL VERNACULAR DANCES

Abstract
The Province of Pangasinan in Northern Philippines is interesting to explore in terms of
culture and arts, most particularly ritual dances, depicted in dances and games. The Province has rituals portrayed in the festivals that mystically hide the unique Pangasinense life. Festival vernacular dances, in particular, are wholesome form of entertainment reflecting the traditional life of the folk. To this end, this study, aimed to probe into the significance of festival vernacular dances in Pangasinan in preserving and promoting local culture. Specifically, it dwelt on: 1. describing the festival vernacular dances culturally as to (a) origin; (b) cultural background; and (c) customs and tradition depicted; 2. determining the authentic execution of these dances in terms of the following elements: steps; choreography; musical accompaniment; and costumes and props; and 3. Identify factors related to the preservation and promotion of the said vernacular dances. Based on the objectives of the study, qualitative method was employed utilizing ethnographic approach since the output of the study will rely heavily on the up-close, personal experience, observation and participation of the researcher in performing the said cultural activities. The informants of the study are the selected locals of the identified towns where the festivals are observed. Vernacular dance experts evaluated the validity and authenticity of the contents of the dances, natives of the towns, participants, and spectators of the rituals. Findings revealed that a major component of human culture, being connected with religious beliefs which can be traced from the influences of the Spaniards in the country as well as the predominant occupation or livelihood in the area. Steps and patterns of the festival dances are passed on from one generation to another, gradually undergoing change. Many dances have their origin in rituals-fertility, marriage, religious, or war- and express the character of the community who dance them. Festivals dances are an important element of most aspects of culture. Therefore, the development and the growing importance of culture are followed by the increasing role of festival dances in the contemporary world.
