Magnetic Field: The area around a magnetic in which its magnetic force can
be experienced.
• Its SI unit is Tesla (T).
• Magnetic field has both magnitude and direction.
• Magnetic field can be described with help of a magnetic compass.
• The needle of a magnetic compass is a freely suspended bar magnet.

Characteristics of Field Lines

(i) Field lines arise from North pole and end into South pole of the magnet.
(ii) Field lines are closed curves.
(iii)Field lines are closer in stronger magnetic field.
(iv)Field lines never intersect each other as for two lines to intersect, there must
be two north directions at a point, which is not possible.
(v) Direction of field lines inside a magnet is from South to North.
(vi) The relative strength of magnetic field is shown by degree of closeness of
field lines.
Magnet is any substance that attracts iron or iron-like substances.
Properties of Magnet
(i) Every magnet has two poles i.e., North and South.
(ii) Like poles repel each other.
(iii)Unlike poles attract each other.
(iv)A freely suspended bar magnet aligns itself in nearly north-south direction, with its north pole towards north direction.
Question 1:

Why does a freely suspended magnet point in the north−south direction?

ANSWER:

A freely suspended magnet always points in the north–south direction because earth behaves like a huge bar magnet. The
geographic north pole of the earth is the magnetic south pole and the geographic south pole is the magnetic north pole.
Question 2:

What will happen to the poles of a magnet if it is broken into two?

ANSWER:

When a magnet is broken into two, the resultant is two separate magnets. Each resultant magnet will end up with its own north
and south pole. This shows that poles exist in pairs and there can never be an isolated north or an isolated south pole.
Question 3:

Will a strong magnet attract a piece of copper? Why?

ANSWER:

No, a strong magnet will not attract a piece of copper because copper is not a magnetic metal.
Question 4:

State the rule for attraction and repulsion between two magnets.
ANSWER:

Rule of attraction of magnets states that "when a south pole of a magnet is brought close to the north pole of another magnet,
they attract".
Rule of repulsion of magnets states that "when a north pole of a magnet is brought close to the north pole of another magnet,
they repel".
Question 5:

One precaution you should always take while handling a magnet is not to drop it. Why?
ANSWER:

One precaution you should always take while handling a magnet is not to drop it because when magnets are dropped down to
the floor, the impact of the drop weakens their magnetism
Question 6:

Why are magnetic keepers used to store magnets?

ANSWER:

A magnetic keeper is a piece of wood or soft iron which is used in storing magnets because bar magnets get demagnetised
when the poles are left free for a long time. In order to preserve the magnetism of the magnets, a keeper is kept across a pair
of bar magnets with unlike poles beside each other. This way a continuous path is provided for the magnetic field lines to form
a loop around it.
Question 6:

List any three uses of magnets.

ANSWER:

Following are the uses of magnets:

1. Automobile dynamos to produce electricity
2. Computer hard discs to store information
3. A compass to determine directions.
Q. What is a compass?
Ans- A compass is a small box with a glass cover on it. A magnetized needle is pivoted inside the box. This needle indicates
the north-south direction when it comes to rest.

Q. When does a magnet loose it's properties?

Ans- A magnet looses it's properties when it is
1- heated
2- hammered
3- dropped from some height
4- not stored properly

Q. How are magnets stored?

Ans- Magnets are stored as follows:
1 - Bar magnets should be kept in pairs with unlike poles on the same side. They must be separated by a piece of wood and

two pieces of soft iron should be placed across their ends.

2- A piece of iron should be placed across the poles of a horse-shoe magnet.

3- Magnets should be kept away from cassettes, mobiles, televisions, music system, compact disks (CDs) and the computer.

Q. Few iron nails and screws got mixed with the wooden shavings while a carpenter was wrking with them. How can you help
him in getting the nails and screws back from scrap without wasting his time in searching with his hands?
Ans- Nails and screws are magnetic substances. Carpenter can use a magnet to separate nails and screws from wooden
shavings without wasting time in searching with his hands.
Give reason. Why?

Travelers carry magnet with them in olden days.

Ans- Travelers used to carry magnets with them to find the directions. They used to find direction by suspending natural
magnets with a thread.

A freely suspended magnet always points in North-South direction.
