Instruction

The purpose of this assignment is to help you reflect on your learning in both your overall degree, and in MAF302.
You will then work on articulating the value your degree and experiences can offer potential employers and
provide evidence of your learning. This assignment is designed to get you to think about your career options and
how your acquired skills and knowledge prepare you for the workplace.
Before you start this assignment, it is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the Finance Learning
Standards (FLS). Understanding these will help you understand the expectations of a finance graduate. The FLS
have been jointly created by academics and industry, with the aim of matching employer and educator
expectations.
The Finance Learning Standards are developed by the Australia Business Deans Council (ABDC) and aim to
provide the learning outcomes that finance graduates are expected to have attained in their degree. For a full
report on the Finance Learning Standards, please refer to the below link:

Submission
Your video must be uploaded to DeakinAir by 5pm Monday 12 June 2017. Videos submitted through CloudDeakin will not
be accepted. Further instructions on how to submit your videos to DeakinAir can be found here.
You must keep a backup copy of every assignment you submit, until the marked assignment has been returned
to you. In the unlikely event that your assignment is misplaced, you will need to submit your backup copy.

Late submission

The following marking penalties will apply if you submit an assessment task after the due date without an approved
extension: 5% will be deducted from available marks for each day up to five days, and work that is submitted
more than five days after the due date will not be marked. You will receive 0% for the task. 'Day' means working
day for paper submissions and calendar day for electronic submissions. The Unit Chair may refuse to accept a
late submission where it is unreasonable or impracticable to assess the task after the due date.

Extensions can only be approved by the Unit Chair (Hoa Nguyen). Extensions can be granted for documented
serious illness (not just on the day the assignment is due!) or for compassionate reasons under extenuating
circumstances. The unit chair can ask to see how much work has been completed before granting an extension.
Work or holiday reasons are NOT grounds for an extension – you are expected to manage these issues as part
of your studies. You are strongly encouraged to start early and to continually backup your assignment as you
progress. Computer crashes or corrupted files will NOT be accepted as valid reasons for an extension of any
length. For further information about Special Consideration, visit

YOUR PROFESSIONAL IDENTIFY

In this assessment, you are required to produce  a seven-minute power point video presentation  on your
learning and experience at Deakin which includes a 60-second elevator pitch.
Your presentation should explore the value you can offer employers and their organisation. This will be a
showcase and learning tool for you to store evidence of the skill and knowledge that you have developed
throughout your time at Deakin.
Throughout your time at Deakin your focus will mostly have been on learning finance concepts and theories, in
MAF302 you apply your learning to real-world problems through the discussion of case studies. Integrating this
with your experience outside of university (e.g. part-time work, studies abroad and internships) will help you in
developing a competitive application for a graduate position. Remember that this is not merely a summary of your
learning. The purpose is to both reflect on your learning and promote yourself to potential employers.
Your presentation will include:
1. Introduction – with your career aspirations, and a professional image of yourself
2. Body – talk about your specific skills, experience and achievements including, but not limited to:
 Knowledge – what finance topics interested you most throughout your course, and how may that
influence your future career? For those doing a double major or double degree, what value have
these other disciplines added to your finance education?
 Application and judgement – what finance skills have you developed throughout your course? Your
discussion could look at your experience with MAF302’s applied project, in placements or beyond.
 Communication and teamwork – what roles have you played in teams in MAF302 or in your previous
teamwork experience, what worked well and what would you change for the future?
 A brief discussion of how your acquired knowledge and skills fit in with the Finance Learning
Standards and how they would help you market yourself in the labour market.
3. Conclusion – this will be formatted as an elevator pitch, on the value that you would bring to potential
employers’ organisation. This video must be no longer than 60 seconds, and must be included at the end of
your presentation. This is a summary of your presentation.
In preparing for the elevator pitch, ask yourself ‘if I bumped into a potential employer in the elevator,
how would I promote myself to them?’
You should aim for an engaging and insightful presentation and avoid large chunks of text in your slides (think of
the rule of 6s: no more than six lines per page, and six words per line). You may choose to reflect on your MAF302
applied project, or other relevant professional experience you have had. It is essential that you provide evidence
of your skills, experience and knowledge. For example, images of work produced and/or you working in the
industry.
