Information for Technical Exams

Permitted Calculator Models

Format 1 - No calculator permitted.  The exam may be Closed or Open Book.

Format 2 - There are two calculator models permitted for this format: either a Casio or Sharp model.  The exam may be Closed or Open Book.   Note, any alpha letters that
immediately follows the calculator model number is fine except for the letter ‘s’ which means the calculator is programmable.  If the letter ‘s’ is in combination with other alpha
letters then the calculator is acceptable i.e. ‘ms’. (Please note that “none” in the list of aids represents no further instructions for this exam.)

Format 3 - Any non-communicating calculator will be permitted.  The exam will be an Open Book exam.  Candidates will identify the calculator used on the inside left-hand sheet
of the exam workbook; i.e., name and model designation. (Please note that “none” under aids and instructions means that you may bring as many textbook(s) or notes etc. into the
exam. There are no restrictions with this format 3 exam.)   Please note space allocated to candidates writing open book exams will be the same as closed book exams.  Therefore
you will need to limit the number of textbooks brought into the exam room.

Writing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

It is possible to write the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering exam instead of confirmatory exams. You must register
to write the exam directly with NCEES. There is a cost of $250.00 payable to NCEES at the time of registration. When you register to write the exam make sure you choose APEGS
from the list of boards and partners. That way we will be notified of the results.

you graduated from issue a copy of your transcript directly to APEGS.

Step 3: Mail proof of ID document to APEGS

You must provide proof of your identity by completing the guarantor form and sending it to APEGS by mail (post).

Proof of Identification Form with example.pdf

If you do not know a professional engineer or geoscientist registered in Canada who can be a guarantor, a staff member at the APEGS office can sign your form. You must bring the
guarantor form and you government issued photo ID to the APEGS office.  If you do not bring your ID with you the staff cannot sign the form.

Proof of ID must be sent to the APEGS office by mail (post). Faxed or scanned copies are not acceptable.

Step 4: Academic Assessment

The Academic Assessment requires that you pay a fee of $210 including tax (in addition to the member-in-training application fee) and submit the following to APEGS by email:

i.    APEGS will notify you once the invoice for the academic assessment fee has been posted to you online profile
ii.   Self-Assessment
iii.  Official Program Syllabi
iv.   Resume
Email documents to Documents-AcademicReview@apegs.ca

Make sure that the resume you provide includes all the geoscience experience you have gained since completing your bachelor degree. You must include the dates (including
month and year) you started and ended each position, the title of the position, the name of the company and a brief description of the job tasks. There is no prescribed format for
the resume. Submit the same style resume that you would use for a job application. We review your resume to see the full history of your academic and experience background.

The documents in ii through iv must be sent by email after you have submitted your online application. Please include your file number and full name on each document.

Steps 1 through 4 must be completed before we will begin processing your application.

Once we have received all the required documents including your WES credential evaluation, we will begin assessing your file. We will send you an email telling that your file is now
“In Progress” and give an estimate of how long it will take for the academic assessment to be completed.

Next Steps

What happens once my application has been received?

Once you have completed steps one through three and APEGS has received all the relevant documents, APEGS will send you an email to confirm that your files is now “in
progress”. The email will state: Your application for an academic review as part of your member-in-training application with APEGS is completed in full. We have received all the
documents we need and your file is now considered to be “in progress”. The estimated time for the academic assessment to be completed is one year from this date.

We will not provide status updates by email or phone, so please do not contact APEGS to inquire about it. Once the Academic Review Committee has made a decision on your file,
you will be notified by mail. Please make sure that your contact information is kept up to date in our database to ensure that you receive mail from us. You can update your profile
through APEGS Central (the new online profile). Click Login on the top right corner of any APEGS web page to login.

What is an Academic Assessment?

APEGS will compare your academic background to the Canadian academic standard for geoscience. The Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists (Geoscientists Canada) has
set this standard and outlined it in a document called “Geoscience Knowledge and Experience Requirements (GKE)”, or GKE for short.

Possible Results of Academic Assessment

Deficiencies:

If there are any gaps in your academic background compared to the GKE then you will be assigned to fill these gaps or “deficiencies”. If you have more than six deficiencies then
APEGS will deny your application. However you will be given a “roadmap” of what you must do to re-apply in the future. You are given three options for fulfilling deficiencies:

 taking an approved course(s)

OR

writing challenge exams

OR

writing a description of work experience that demonstrates knowledge of the deficient areas (called Recognition of Prior Learning or RPL)

Once your deficiencies have been fulfilled, you will be assigned confirmatory exams.

Confirmatory Exams:

If APEGS determines that you have a four-year bachelor level program of study in geoscience that meets the content requirement as specified in the GKE, then you will be assigned
confirmatory exams. There are usually three confirmatory exams, but this is at the discretion of the Academic Review Committee (ARC). These technical exams confirm that the level
of your academic training comparables to that of a four-year Canadian bachelor degree in geoscience.

Waiving Confirmatory Exams:

Confirmatory exams may be waived in the following circumstances:

You have completed an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in geoscience.

OR

You have five years or more of acceptable work experience. If the Academic Review Committee (ARC) determines that this is an option for you, you will be notified in writing
an you must write up your work experience following APEGS experience reporting guidelines and have it assessed by the Experience Review Committee (ERC). We will notify
you if you have this option. DO NOT submit work experience reports unless you are notified that you are eligible for this.

OR

The Academic Review Committee (ARC) has determined that your performance in completing deficiencies through the course or exam route demonstrates an acceptable
level of education.

Once confirmatory exams have been completed, or they have been waived, APEGS will send you a letter informing you that you have been approved as a geoscientist-in-training.
You have the privilege of using the title "Geoscientist-in-Training" only after you have been approved. This letter will include a dues notice for your annual membership and licence
fees. Once you have paid the fees, we will send you your stamp and certificate. You will have six weeks to pay your annual membership and licence fees after you have been
approved. You can use the title "Geoscientist-in-Training" as soon as you are approved, however you must pay the annual fees before the deadline provided in your approval letter.

What if I'm not sure I'll meet the academic requirements for geoscient-in-training?

If you are not sure if you meet the academic requirements for geoscientist-in-training, you should apply as a geoscientist-in-training anyway and see what the results are. If your
result shows that you do not meet the academic requirements, your options would be to fulfill the deficiencies, or apply as a geoscience licensee. The application fee for geoscience
licensee would be reduced by the amount you paid to apply as an geoscientist-in-training in the past (the difference in the two application fees is currently $100.

Important!

If during the registration process APEGS discovers that an applicant or member may not meet the Good Character Guideline then action will be taken.

What is an Academic Assessment?

APEGS will compare your academic background to the Canadian academic standard for engineering. The Engineers Canada - Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board (CEQB) has
set this standard. The CEQB has provided syllabus descriptions  for the most common engineering disciplines that are offered at Canadian universities. There is a basic studies
syllabus that is common to all disciplines. There is also a discipline-specific syllabus. Both of these must be met. The self-assessment that you are required to fill out as part of the
academic assessment is based on these syllabus descriptions.

Possible Results of Academic Assessment

Deficiencies:

If there are any gaps in your academic background compared to the CEQB syllabi, then you will be assigned to fill these gaps or “deficiencies”. You are allowed a maximum of six
deficiencies. If you have more than six deficiencies then APEGS will deny your application, however, you will be given a “roadmap” of what you must do to re-apply in the future.

There are two options for fulfilling deficiencies:

1. taking an approved course(s)

OR

2. writing challenge exams

If you feel that you have already covered some or all of these subjects in your studies, then you may request a re-assessment. You are only permitted to make one request for re-
assessment. The re-assessment result is final and may result in additional deficiencies being identified. If you do not have any additional information to provide then a re-
assessment is not an option and you must fulfil your deficiencies before your file can move forward. You must send an email to Questions-AcademicReview@APEGS.ca with the
subject heading "re-assessment request" to get the re-assessment request form.

Once your deficiencies have been fulfilled, you will be assigned confirmatory exams.

Confirmatory Exams:

If APEGS determines that you have a engineering bachelor-level program of study that meets the content requirement as specified in the CEQB syllabi, then you will be assigned
confirmatory exams. There are usually three confirmatory exams, but this is at the discretion of the Academic Review Committee (ARC). These technical exams confirm that the level
of your academic training comparable to that of a four-year Canadian bachelor-level university program of study in engineering.

Waiving Confirmatory Exams:

Confirmatory exams may be waived in the following circumstances:

You have completed an M.Sc., M.Eng. or Ph.D. in engineering.

Note: If your education is from a country that follows the Bologna Process and your education path is the Bachelor plus Master degree of the Bologna Process, both degrees
together are required to meet the academic standard for licensure in Canada. Therefore, the Master degree is not eligible for waiving confirmatory exams.

OR

If you have more than five years of acceptable work experience and if the Academic Review Committee (ARC) determines that this is an option for you (you would be notified
in writing if that is the case), you must write up your work experience following APEGS experience reporting guidelines and have it assessed by the Experience Review
Committee (ERC). If the ERC determines that your experience is acceptable, then the exam will be waived. If the experience is not acceptable, then you must write the exams.
We will notify you if you have this option. DO NOT submit work experience unless you are notified that you are eligible for this.

OR

The ARC has determined that your performance in completing deficiencies through the course or exam route demonstrates an acceptable level of education.

Application approval

Once confirmatory exams have been completed, or they have been waived, APEGS will send you a letter informing you that you have been approved as an engineer-in-training.
This letter will include a dues notice for your annual membership and licence fees. You will also be notified by automatic email on how to check your application status in APEGS
Central. Fees can also be paid in APEGS Central under "Invoices".

You will have six weeks to pay your annual membership and licence fees after you have been approved. You can use the title "Engineer-in-Training" as soon as you are approved,
however you must pay the annual fees before the deadline provided in your approval letter.
Your certificate will be delivered after it is signed by the President, which can take up to six weeks. You do not need your certificate in your possession in order to start using the
title "Engineer-in-Training".

Engineer-in-Training Stamp

After you have paid annual fees, the stamp will be mailed to you. Delivery can take up to five weeks within Canada or longer outside Canada.

What if I'm not sure I'll meet the academic requirements for engineer-in-training?

If you are not sure if you meet the academic requirements for engineer-in-training, you should apply as an engineer-in-training anyway and see what the results are. If your result
shows that you do not meet the academic requirements, your options would be to fulfill the deficiencies, or apply as an engineering licensee. The application fee for engineering
licensee would be reduced by the amount you paid to apply as an engineer-in-training in the past (the difference in the two application fees is currently $100).

Important!

If during the registration process APEGS discovers that an applicant or member may not meet the Good Character Guideline then action will be taken.

Work Experience Reporting

Ensure that you have read thoroughly and understand all experience reporting guidelines before beginning your work experience submission. This will greatly increase the chance
of success and reduce the risk of being required to re-submit.

Instructions and guideline for engineering experience reporting, click here.

Instructions, forms and guidelines for geoscience experience reporting, click here.

*Note 1: Experience reporting is for registered members-in-training as well as member-in-training applicants (international graduates) who have been assigned confirmatory
exams and have been given the option of submitting work experience to waive confirmatory exams.

*Note 2: If you are a professional engineer in the United States and you have an up-to-date NCEES Record, then your NCEES Record will suffice for experience reporting, academic
documents and references. There is no need to submit experience reports in APEGS forms if you will be submitting your NCEES Record.

Results of experience review are not provided over the phone. Results are sent by email when they are ready. Do not contact the APEGS office for experience results. It
takes one to three months for experience to be reviewed from the time forms are received and completed in full. If there are problems with your report(s), you will be contacted.

Experience Report Submission Cut Off Dates

The Experience Review Committee receives reports two weeks ahead of each committee meeting. Cut-off dates for receipt of experience reports for upcoming committee meeting
dates are shown below.  It is highly recommended that you get reports submitted at least one week before the cut-off date. That way, if there are any issues found with the
report, then there is a chance it can be resolved prior to the cut off date (all issues must be resolved before the report will go to the committee).

Upcoming report submission cut-off dates (there must be no issues with the report in order for it to go to the committee. These dates are subject to change):

How do I submit completed experience reports to APEGS?

Your options for the paper-based system are as follows (applies to all geoscientists-in-training and to any engineer-in-training who is eligible to continue in the paper-
based system - meaning you have at least one paper-based report submitted before January 1, 2019):

1) Mail. Ideally submit the original, hard copy of the completed report by mail. You should always keep a copy of the report just in case it doesn't arrive at our office.

2) Scan and email to experience-review@apegs.ca. The scan must be of good quality and the file size less than 5 MB. Good quality is necessary because once we receive the
report we have to print and scan it again in a small file size for posting to a secure file sharing site for Reviewers. Also, if your supervisor or mentor scanned and emailed the signed
report to you, then you printed it for your signature and scanned it again, then by the time we print and scan it the third time, the quality can become too low for Reviewers.
Therefore, mailing the original is preferred.

3) Fax. We discourage faxing reports since the quality is usually very poor and hard to read after it is scanned again for Reviewers.

For the new, online CBA system (engineers-in-training only), all information is submitted through the online system.

Competency-Based Assessment (CBA)

https://www.apegs.ca/Portal/Pages/competency-based-assessment

Background on the New Experience Assessment System for Engineering – Online Competency-Based
Assessment

This page contains the background information on the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) system that came into effect on January 1, 2019 for engineers-in-training. For
current applicants and engineers-in-training who are ready to use the system, click here.

Introduction

Prior to being granted a licence, an engineering applicant must demonstrate their ability to practise engineering. The onus is on the applicant to provide evidence that they
possess, through experience, a satisfactory capability to practice engineering at a professional level.

Many of Canada’s engineering regulators have implemented or are moving toward competency-based assessment of engineering experience. To this end, a multi-year, Pan-
Canadian competency-based assessment project was undertaken with participation from engineering regulators in several provinces. In the current phase of this project, the online
competency assessment system developed by Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (BC) is being adapted for use by other regulators in Canada.

At the May 2018 Annual Meeting, the APEGS membership unanimously approved this new experience assessment system, effective January 1, 2019. It applies to professional
engineer applicants to APEGS (i.e. engineers-in-training) as well as engineer-in-training international graduate applicants given the experience review option to waive confirmatory
exams. All requirements remain the same, including four years of experience, at least one year of experience in a Canadian or equivalent-to-Canadian environment, and the
possibility to count up to one year of pre-grad experience for eligible applicants, as well as the others that are currently in place.
Note that competency-based assessment for geoscience experience is under development in a separate project and its implementation is being planned for the future.

Benefits of Competency-Based Assessment

Competencies are observable and measurable skills, knowledge, abilities, motivations or traits required for professional registration that are demonstrated through the actions and
behaviours of the applicant. The competency-based assessment system:

permits a more quantitative assessment of applicants using a more precise measuring system than the current APEGS experience review guidelines.
more explicitly described and defined measurement tool to assess readiness for licensure.
makes the assessment more objective, transparent and consistent and increases the confidence of all who participate in the process including applicants, validators,
employers and assessors on the Experience Review Committee.

What constitutes acceptable engineering experience is not changing, we are better describing it.

Description of the Competency-Based Assessment Framework

The competency assessment framework makes use of seven Competency Categories, which are groupings of a total of 34 competencies or skills:
1) Technical competence [10 competencies]
2) Communication [3 competencies]
3) Project and financial management [5 competencies]
4) Team effectiveness [2 competencies]
5) Professional accountability [6 competencies]
6) Social, economic, environmental and sustainability [5 competencies]
7) Personal continuing professional development (CPD) [3 competencies]

The seven categories represent the areas in which professional engineers of all disciplines must be competent to ensure effective practice and public safety. Each Competency
Category contains a list of the key competencies required in that area. The complete details are included in the Competency Assessment Guide, posted in the Related Documents
below.

Achievement of each category is measured through a Competency Rating Scale that outlines six different levels of competence (0-5). A successful candidate must meet each of
the competencies in each category at a minimum level of 1 on the Competency Rating Scale, while achieving the required minimum category average ‘entry to practice’ rating level
of 2 or 3, depending on the category.

Online Submission

The CBA experience submission is done through the online portal at https://competencyassessment.ca. You can also view the system using the sample APEGS applicant instructions
found at the bottom of this page under Related Attachments.

The use of an online competency assessment process enables applicants to easily report and their validators to validate their engineering experience from anywhere in the world
(keeping in mind that a minimum of one year of Canadian or equivalent-to-Canadian experience is still required - with the exception of international graduate applicants who have
been given the experience review option to waive confirmatory exams). Applicants, validators and assessors are provided with a personal login. Once an applicant has completed
his or her competency entries, the applicable validators are notified when the applicant indicates in the online system that the competencies that pertain to them are ready to
validate.

For a complete description of the online submission process, see the Competency Assessment Guide posted in the Related Documents below.

Historical Project Timeline

February 2, 2018: Council approved the change to competency-based assessment.

May 5, 2018 Annual Meeting: APEGS membership unanimously ratified Council’s recommendation to switch to competency-based assessment.

January 1, 2019: Competency-based assessment of engineering experience came into effect (and applies to all engineers-in-training who have not submitted any complete
experience reports in the outgoing, paper-based system by January 1, 2019. All other engineers-in-training have a choice to continue in the paper-based system or switch to the
CBA system, see the next section for further detail).

Transition from the Current Experience Reporting System

You may continue in the current experience reporting system if you wish if you are a current engineer-in-training who has submitted one or more complete experience reports
before January 1, 2019. However, you are encouraged and invited to switch to the CBA system.

You are required to use the new CBA system if any one of the following situations applies to you:
• current engineer-in-training from whom APEGS has not received one or more experience reports before January 1, 2019;
• an engineer-in-training applicant who is an international graduate that has been given the experience review option to waive confirmatory exams and APEGS has not received
their completed experience submission (consisting of five years of reports) by January 1, 2019;
• people who applied to APEGS as an engineer-in-training on or after January 1, 2019.

You are required to use the new CBA system if Scenario 1, 2 or 3 applies to you:

Scenario 1
As of January 1, 2019, you are not yet registered as an engineer-in-training with APEGS (with one exception – see Scenario 3).

Scenario 2
As of January 1, 2019, you are registered as an engineer-in-training with APEGS and you have not submitted any complete experience reports in the outgoing, paper-based system.

Scenario 3
As of January 1, 2019, you are an international graduate who has applied as an engineer-in-training with APEGS, you have been given the experience review option to waive
confirmatory exams and you have not submitted any experience reports in the outgoing, paper-based system.
You can continue in the outgoing, paper-based system if Scenario 4 or 5 applies to you:

You are encouraged to switch to the online CBA system even if Scenario 4 or 5 applies to you.

Scenario 4
As of January 1, 2019, you are registered as an engineer-in-training with APEGS and APEGS has received one or more completed experience reports in the outgoing, paper-based
system.

Scenario 5
As of January 1, 2019, you are an international graduate who has previously applied as an engineer-in-training with APEGS, you have been given the experience review option to
waive confirmatory exams and APEGS has received all 5 years of your completed experience reports in the outgoing, paper-based system. The CBA system will only apply to you if
you are asked to re-submit.

Benefits of CBA

CBA makes experience reporting easier and more transparent. It is highly recommended that engineers-in-training switch to the new CBA system even if they have already
submitted reports in the outgoing, paper-based system. You may use experience examples from experience reports already submitted on the outgoing, paper-based system but
make sure to include any information from there in the online CBA system for it to be considered:

1. It is easier to gauge if your experience qualifies for professional registration and therefore increases your confidence when writing your submission.
We have better described what constitutes acceptable engineering work experience, there has been no change in the requirements.
2. There are “Indicators” to provide more insight into what will satisfy a competency.
3. It is more quantitative and objective.
There is an explicitly described rating scale from 0 to 5 that the applicant, Validators and Assessors use.
4. Only 34 examples required.
You provide one example for each of the 34 competencies from any time in your entire engineering experience history instead of 54 (or more) examples in the
outgoing, paper-based system.
This is different than the outgoing, paper-based system where each experience report contains examples from a specific time frame.
5. It is online.
No more paper and obtaining signatures.
The online system facilitates all information entry, sharing and notifications.
No more coordination is needed by the applicant through email and mail to validators and APEGS (except for the interim assessment - see the Competency
Assessment Guide for details).
All entries are available for download by the applicant as a pdf at any time.

How to switch to the new CBA system

The new CBA system is ready to use. Click here for the web page that contains instructions on how to use the system.

You may use experience examples from experience reports already submitted in the outgoing, paper-based system. The Experience Review Committee will not refer to your
previously submitted, paper-based experience reports when doing your CBA assessment so be sure to include any information from there in the online CBA system if you
want it to be considered.

Town Hall Meetings

From January to March 2018, APEGS staff toured the province and facilitated Town Hall meetings in 14 locations. The proposed changes were presented and discussed (as well as
the proposed changes to CPD reporting). Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. A list of questions received at the Town Halls and the answers are posted in the Related

FAQs pertaining to a variety of application types:

How do I use the on-line-application?

You can access the on-line application system from the link provided on the appropriate page under Apply. To get started, go to Start Application.

IMPORTANT: The person applying for registration is the person who must complete the on-line application. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all the information
entered is correct. The statements made in any application to APEGS must be true and correct. Any false or misleading statement on an application or relating to any document in
support of this application, including concealment of any material fact, may be found to be contrary to the APEGS Good Character Guideline  and lead to denial or revocation of
your registration.

You must use a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or AMEX) to apply online. Check the application fee table for the current processing fees. If you apply online, you must pay the GST.
If your employer does not pay GST and they will be reimbursing you for the application fee, APEGS cannot reverse the GST payment. Examples of employers who do not pay GST
on processing fees: Government of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Watershed Authority.

Please ensure that the domain name “apegs.ca” is not blocked. If you don’t receive any emails from APEGS as you go through the on-line application, check your junk email folder
or call the APEGS office.

Before starting your application, read the applicable application instructions on the APEGS website under Apply. Also, to sign the declarations at the end of the on-line application,
you must review and be familiar with the Act and Bylaws (The Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act) of Saskatchewan. Click here to view the APEGS Privacy Policy.

Do I have to apply on-line?

You must apply on-line unless a company is paying your application fee by cheque or the company who is paying the application fee does not pay GST (such as Government of
Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Watershed Authority). There is a paper form available on each applicable web page depending on the application type.

We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express in the on-line application system. If you cannot pay by credit card, then you must complete the appropriate paper application
form. Scan and email or fax or mail the completed paper application to the APEGS office (apegs@apegs.ca). You may pay for paper applications by credit card, cheque, cash or
debit (cash or debit in person at the APEGS office only).

Once you have submitted your application on-line and APEGS staff has accepted the application in our system, you will receive an automatic email from APEGS with your
permanent User ID for APEGS Central (the new online profile). To access APEGS Central click Login on the top right corner of any page on this website.

What if I don’t have a credit card to pay on-line?

If you don’t have a credit card then you must complete the paper application form which is available for you to print from the appropriate web page, depending on the application
type. Paper applications can be paid by cheque, credit card, cash or debit.  If you are paying by cheque, send your cheque and paper application form by mail or drop them off at
the APEGS office during regular office hours. If you are paying by cash or debit card, bring your completed paper application with you to the APEGS office and make your payment
in person.

How long will my application take?

On the Application Fees and Timelines page there is both a table of fees AND the processing timelines.

What if my bachelor level education is not in engineering or geoscience?

If your bachelor level education is not in either of these fields, then you may not be qualified to apply for a licence. However, if your bachelor degree is in a related field and you
have a graduate degree in engineering or geoscience you might meet the academic requirements for member-in-training. You must follow the same process as international
graduates, because we require a full academic assessment, even if your bachelor level education is from within Canada.

Click here for international engineering graduate assessment information.

Click here for international geoscience graduate assessment information.

If you do not think you can meet the academic requirements for member-in-training, but you have a significant amount of engineering or geoscience work experience then you
may qualify as a engineering licensee or geoscience licensee. The Engineering Licensee and Geoscience Licensee page contains a table that shows how much work experience
would be required for your level of education.

What is the difference between membership and licensure?

APEGS annual dues contain two components: a membership fee and a licence fee. If you are a practicing engineering or geoscientist on projects or properties located in
Saskatchewan you must pay both fees. If you are not practicing for a certain period of time, you can have your license fee waived in certain situations, but maintain your
membership in APEGS. Go to the Annual Fees, Licence Waiver web page to find out if you qualify. Obtaining a licence waiver (and maintaining your membership) allows you to
reinstate your licensee at any time without having to re-apply. You must reinstate your license if you start practicing again by calling the APEGS office and paying the prorated
licence fee for the remainder of the calendar year.

Retaining your membership at a cost of $85 per year (plus GST) is a quick and easy option to have your licence available to be reinstated by a phone call and credit card number.
Retaining your membership also allows you to vote in Council elections and at Annual Meetings and to receive communications from APEGS.

If you resign your membership or your membership lapses because you have not paid your annual fees, then you might have to re-apply to start practicing again depending on
how long it has been since your membership ceased (the application fee is $300 plus GST for professional members and $200 plus GST for members-in-training). See
the Reinstatement page for details on when you need to re-apply and what is involved.

How can I pay my application fees?

If you apply online you must pay by credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. If you are paying with cash or debit you must visit the APEGS office in person.
You may send a cheque or money order by mail along with a paper application (if it's not possible to apply and pay online for some reason). The APEGS address is 300 - 4581
Parliament Avenue, Regina, SK S4W 0G3.

How can I pay my annual fees?

Once your application is approved, you have six weeks to pay annual membership and licence fees. During this six-week time period, you are entitled to use the designation(s) for
which you were approved. It is best to pay on-line in APEGS Central by selecting "Invoices". Alternatively, you can pay by cheque, money order, debit or cash (debit or cash in
person at the office).  Note that your APEGS Central account is not created until you sign up. The instructions can be found under the applicable web page under "Apply"
depending on your application type.

How do I get a waiver of my licence fee?

To get a waiver of your licence fee you must qualify and make a request in writing using the Licence Waiver application form. Go to the Annual Fees, Licence Waiver web page to
find details.

Can I get a waiver of my membership fee?

APEGS does not waive membership fees. If you have not paid by the deadline provided in your approval letter or annual renewal notice, and your membership lapses, or you resign
your membership, then you might have to re-apply depending on how long it has been since your membership lapsed. See details on the Reinstatement page.

How do I reinstate my licence?

If you obtain engineering or geoscience work on projects or properties located in Saskatchewan, you must reinstate your licence if you have received a licence waiver for the year.
To reinstate your license after it has been waived, call the APEGS office at 306-525-9547 (in Regina) or toll free 1-800-500-9547 (anywhere in North America). We will prorate your
licence fee for the remainder of the year and you must pay the licence fee before you can start practicing engineering or geoscience on projects or properties located in
Saskatchewan.

Note that it is not possible to get a licence waiver a second time in the same calendar year.

Also note that you are not eligible for a licence waiver if you are residing in Saskatchewan and you are working at any job, including non-engineering and non-geoscience jobs.

FAQs pertaining to mobility applications:

What is the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT)?

The Agreement on Internal Trade stipulates that professionals can be registered in equivalent Association(s) in Canada without further assessment. APEGS calls these types of
applications "Inter-Association Mobility".

For full detail on the Agreement on Internal Trade, refer to the Engineers Canada web site: http://www.engineerscanada.ca/e/pr_mobility_2.cfm
If the link does not work, look under Programs, Mobility, National Mobility on the Engineers Canada Web site.

Information about mobility applications to APEGS can be found under the Inter-Association Mobility web page.

I am registered as a Provisional Licensee in another Association in Canada. What registration category do I qualify for with APEGS?

APEGS does not have a "provisional licensee" registration category. In other Associations, depending on the Association, it signifies that the person has met all of the requirements
for professional registration except for either the one year of Canadian work experience or the language requirement. The mobility application type you are eligible for with APEGS
is either engineer-in-training or geoscientist-in-training.

If you have questions or to discuss the best route for your situation contact Shawna Argue, Director of Registration sargue@apegs.ca or call her at the APEGS office.

FAQs pertaining to member-in-training applications:

If I already have lots of experience, why do I have to apply as a member-in-training?

APEGS mandates this process. All applicants, if they have not previously been registered as a professional engineer or professional geoscientist in any province or territory of
Canada, regardless of their number of years of experience, must apply as an engineer-in-training or geoscientist-in-training before they can become a professional engineer.

If you are already registered as an engineer-in-training or geoscientist-in-training in another province or territory of Canada, and you have completed the academic requirements
for registration, you can find your application instructions under Inter-Association Mobility – member-in-training application.

When can I start calling myself an “Engineer-in-Training” or “Geoscientist-in-Training”?

You may start using these titles after you have received notice either through your approval letter or in APEGS Central (the new online profile) stating that your application for
member-in-training has been approved (note that, within six weeks of approval, you have to pay the annual fees, details are included with the approval letter). Once you have
become registered as a member-in-training with APEGS, you have the right to use the title "Engineer-in-Training" or “Geoscientist-in-Training” for engineering or geoscience work
(as applicable) pertaining to projects or properties located in Saskatchewan*. On business cards, in engineering/geoscience work, on job applications and in all correspondence
the title must be written out in full because the acronyms "EIT" and “GIT” are not designated titles under The Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act or Bylaws nor are they
publicly recognized acronyms. You may use any other title containing the word "Engineer" or “Geoscientist” as long as you are also identifying yourself as an Engineer-in-Training or
Geoscientist-in-Training, as applicable. It must be clear to the public that you are not a professional engineer or professional geoscientist.

For example, the following is acceptable:

Jane Smith, Engineer-in-Training

Project Engineer

John Smith, Geoscientist-in-Training

Exploration Geoscientist

*The titles Engineer-in-Training and Geoscientist-in-Training can only be used in the province(s) where you are registered as such and proper use of title varies by province. You
must contact the specific Association(s) to determine the acceptable use of titles in that jurisdiction.

If you have any questions on the use of titles, contact Chris Wimmer, P.Eng., Director of Professional Standards at 1-800-500-9547 (anywhere in North America) or 306-525-9547 (in
Regina) or by email cwimmer@apegs.ca.

What are the Academic Requirements for a member-in-training?

For an engineer-in-training, a bachelor level university program of study in engineering that is recognized by Council is required. If you have a Canadian Engineering Accreditation
Board (CEAB) accredited degree, then you meet the academic requirement. If you do not have a CEAB-accredited engineering degree then we require an APEGS academic
assessment to determine if your education has sufficient breadth and depth, as set out in the Canadian Engineering Qualification Board (CEQB) syllabi.

For a geoscientist-in-training, a four-year bachelor level university education in geoscience that is recognized by Council is required. For the Council to recognize your degree, it
must meet the Canadian standard, which has been set out by Geoscientists Canada. The document “Geoscience Knowledge and Experience Requirements for Professional
Registration in Canada” (or the GKE) contains the details of this standard. See the International Geoscience Graduates web page for details.

FAQs pertaining to international graduate (member-in-training) applications:

Do I have to have my academic documents sent directly from my university?

If you applied on or after April 1, 2015 you must have a credential assessment by World Education Services (WES). APEGS will get copies of the authenticated academic documents
directly from WES. If you applied before April 1, 2015 then original or notarized/certified copies of academic documents have to be sent directly from the university to APEGS.

What is direct confirmation of graduation and degree and why is it required?

If you applied on or after April 1, 2015 then you must provide APEGS with a credential assessment by World Education Services (WES). The WES assessment provides APEGS with
direct confirmation of graduation and degree as well as transcript details. If you applied prior to April 1, 2015 then APEGS cannot approve you application as a member-in-training
unless your university has confirmed directly with APEGS that you obtained the degree you claim, and when you obtained it. This process is called "direct confirmation of
graduation and degree". We require this confirmation because academic documents can be forged. Direct confirmation from the university provides us with confidence that an
applicant’s documents are authentic.

How should I send my academic documents to APEGS?

All applicants who applied on or after April 1, 2015 are required to have an assessment done by WES (World Education Services) with some exceptions as listed on the International
Engineering Graduates page. Academic documents are provided directly to APEGS from WES as part of their services.
For those people who do not need a WES assessment completed, if you are sending notarized or certified copies of your academic documents then use regular mail. If you are
sending original academic documents, send them by registered mail. All original documents submitted will be returned by registered mail if you include a note telling us that you
want us to return the documents. Alternatively, if you bring originals to the APEGS office during regular business hours, you may leave them with us and we will contact you when
you can pick them up.  If you are coming in person, we strongly recommended that you make an appointment with the appropriate APEGS staff person if you wish to speak to
someone.

What do I have to do to get copies of my documents notarized/certified?

For those people who do not need a WES assessment completed:

Notarizing documents: You may submit a copy of original documents notarized as being a true copy of the original by a Notary Public. The Notary Public must do the following:
apply their seal, sign, date, and include the text "Certified true copy of the original document" on EACH page of the documents.

Certifying documents: You may submit a copy of original documents verified as being a true copy of the original by a professional engineer or professional geoscientist registered
in Canada. The engineer or geoscientist must do the following: apply their professional seal, sign, date, and include the text "Certified true copy of the original document" on EACH
page of the documents.

When is an academic assessment not required?

For engineer-in-training applicants, the only situations where the academic assessment form, fee and self-assessment are NOT required for international graduates are:

You have a bachelor degree accredited under a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).  Such agreements exist with the accreditation bodies in these countries**: United
States, United Kingdom, France, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Chinese Tapei, Hong Kong China, Korea, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, Turkey and India.
See the International Mobility page for important details.
You have a bachelor level university program of study in engineering (bachelor degree or equivalent) and a PE designation in the United States.
You are a faculty member at the University of Regina or University of Saskatchewan, and you have a bachelor level university program of study in engineering (bachelor
degree or equivalent) and a PhD (any discipline).
Your education is assessed by WES as an equivalent level to a 4 year bachelor degree in Canada and is in engineering (staff will check to make sure) and you have one of the
following:
a Masters and/or PhD in engineering from Canada in the same or closely related discipline as your bachelor degree; OR
a Masters and/or PhD in engineering from an institution where there are MRA-accredited bachelor degrees (outside Canada) in the same or closely related discipline
as your bachelor degree.
We have previously assessed an applicant who completed the same bachelor program as you have and they have successfully passed confirmatory exams. This is called the
Master List check. After we have received your application, we will inform you if this applies to you.

** IMPORTANT: Not all degrees from these countries are accredited. It depends on the specific details of the agreement. APEGS will contact you if this applies to you.

For geoscientist-in-training applicants, the only situation where the academic assessment form, fee and self-assessment are NOT required for international graduates is if you have
a four-year bachelor level program of study in geoscience that is acceptable to Council, a Ph.D. (any discipline) and you are a faculty member in geoscience at a Saskatchewan
university.

How long will it take to get the results of my academic assessment?

Application processing time depends on your particular situation. International engineering graduates who do not require the detailed academic assessment can expect a shorter
processing time (approximately two months). Applications that require the detailed academic assessment generally take a minimum eight months, but may take up to a year.
Depending on the outcome of the assessment, to fully meet the academic requirement may take considerably longer. Any further academic preparation required as a result of the
academic assessment will extend the time period required to become qualified for registration as a member-in-training.

What are the Engineers Canada Syllabus descriptions?

The Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board (CEQB) of Engineers Canada develops and maintains a content description for a generalized Canadian engineering program in many
of the disciplines commonly offered in Canada. These are called syllabus descriptions. Each discipline contains two syllabi, one called Basics Studies, which is common to all
disciplines, and another which is specific to the discipline e.g., Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. The CEQB Syllabi page contains links to all the syllabi.

How does the APEGS application process work for international engineering graduates?

Click here for a EIT flowchart which provides an overview of the application process. It will help you understand the application process. There may be technical exams or courses
assigned, depending on the results of the academic assessment.

Unless you meet the Registrar's Acceptance List, at a minimum, you will be assigned confirmatory exams. These exams are comprised of two compulsory subjects and one elective
from the appropriate discipline specific syllabus (syllabus descriptions). APEGS will consider all your information to determine if the exams can be waived (Looking to Waive
policy). Additional exams/courses, over and above the confirmatory exams, may be required if deficiencies are found in your program of study.

You application will be denied if there are more than six deficiencies identified in your academic studies and it is deemed that you require further education, however, a roadmap to
complete the deficiencies is provided, if applicable.

What does “official” program syllabus mean?

“Official” course descriptions means that the description is published by the institution. There are a number of ways these can be published:

on-line
in a booklet (you may make a copy as long as you include the publication details)
a special document/letter issued by the university

More information is provided in Official Program Syllabi

FAQs pertaining to professional member applications (for existing APEGS members-in-training):

What are the requirements for references on the professional member application?

For professional member applications, you must provide the names of the three people registered as either a professional engineer or professional geoscientist in Canada or the
USA. We accept references from professional engineers registered in the United States, however at least one of your references must be from a professional engineer or
professional geoscientist registered in Canada. For special circumstances, contact Shawna Argue, Director of Registration.

FAQs pertaining to work experience reporting (for members-in-training):

Where can I find the experience report submission cut-off dates?

They are located here, under Apply, Work Experience Reporting.

How do I submit completed experience reports to APEGS?

For the paper-based system, click here and scroll down to "How do I submit completed experience reports to APEGS?" (under Apply, Work Experience Reporting). The new online
Compentency-Based Assessment system for engineers-in-training is online only.

I'm not being directly supervised by a professional engineer, professional geoscientist, engineering licensee or geoscience licensee - What do I do?

This applies only to the paper-based experience reporting system. See Section 4 of Experience Guideline 1 explains what you need to do.

For engineers-in-training, you can find Experience Guideline 1 here. (this guideline is for the paper-based system).

For geoscientists-in-training, you can find Experience Guideline 1 here.

NOTICE: a new experience reporting system is coming into effect for engineers-in-training on January 1, 2019 called Competency-Based Assessment (CBA). See the CBA web
page for more detail.

Under the CBA system, it is possible to have experience assessed that is not supervised by a professional engineer or professional geoscientist. See the CBA information for details.

I'm behind in submitting experience reports. Can I submit all four years in one report if I had the same job the entire time?

This answer pertains to the paper-based experience reporting system:

No, you cannot submit all four years of experience in one report. Even if you are behind in experience reporting, you still must submit reports that are of the duration outlined in
Experience Guideline 1. However, you can submit all reports at the same time (although not recommended because there is no opportunity for feedback with interim submissions
and you risk getting all reports denied due to insufficient content).

How many reports can I submit at once?

This answer pertains to the paper-based experience reporting system:

You can submit all reports at the same time and even out of chronological order (most recent report submitted first, for example). The order that reports are submitted does not
matter. However, it is highly recommended that you submit reports on time so that there is an opportunity for feedback. It is common for members-in-training to not understand
the level of detail required.

FAQs pertaining to Engineering Licensee and Geoscience Licensee applications:

What are the academic requirements for an Engineering or Geoscience Licensee?

A table on the Engineering Licensee and Geoscience Licensee page provides the combination of academic and experience requirements for engineering licensee or geoscience
licensee.

What is a “scope of practice” or “field of practice”?

These terms have the same meaning and are used interchangeably in engineering and geoscience licensee registration. They refer to the limitation of the area of practice in which
an engineering licensee and geoscience licensee holders are allowed to work.

What are the requirements for references for Engineering Licensee and Geoscience Licensee applicants?

An applicant must nominate four or more referees with first-hand (supervisory or in a review capacity) knowledge of the applicant’s work. Names of referees are provided by the
applicant through the online application. At least three of the referees must be a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist registered in Canada or the US, or an
Engineering Licensee or Geoscience Licensee (or equivalent) registered in Canada. If experience outside Canada or the United States must be verified, additional referees are
required.

How many years of experience do I need to be able to apply as a Licensee?

Please see the Eligibility Table on the Eng/Geo Licensee page.

Professional Practice Exam

https://www.apegs.ca/Portal/Pages/Professional-Practice-Exam
Professional Practice Exam
About the Exam

It is required that you pass the professional practice exam as part of the qualification for registration as a professional member. The exam is on Canadian law, ethics and
professional practice, and it is not a technical exam.

The APEGS Professional Practice Examination is a three-hour, closed-book examination.  The passing mark is 65%. Refer to the Exam Conduct Policy. PPE3.0 Exam Conduct - Sept
2019.pdf

Candidates caught cheating on the exam may be:

given a grade of zero;

referred to the Registrar’s Advisory Committee (See the APEGS Good Character Guideline in the Related Document Links below); and
have a complaint laid against them to the APEGS Investigation Committee for Professional Misconduct (unethical behaviour).

Eligibility to Write the Exam

Please read this entire web page carefully before completing the application form below.

Before you can apply for the exam, you must be registered with APEGS as:

an Engineer-in-Training;
a Geoscientist-in-Training;
a Temporary Licensee, or
a Licensee Applicant, completing the Licensee probation period, and have received a letter from the Registrar granting you permission to write the exam.

And:
- For members-in-training who are using the old paper-based experience reporting system, they must have submitted at least one fully completed 'post-bachelor' engineering
or geoscience work experience report to the APEGS. The report can be for experience obtained anywhere in the world. Note that 'post-bachelors' does not mean post-graduate, it
means any experience obtained after receiving your bachelor degree.  Pre-grad work experience does not qualify you to write the exam. The experience does not have to be
approved in order for you to write the exam, the report simply needs to be at our office and has to be completed in full (all required signatures, etc).
- For engineers-in-training who are using the online CBA experience reporting system, they must have completed and had validated three competencies, including one from
category one. The experience does not have to be approved in order for you to write the exam, the submission simply needs to be ready for interim assessment (Validators
validated the applicable examples).
- This does not include experience submitted by international graduates who have been given the option to submit five years of work experience in order to waive
confirmatory exams (these applicants must first be approved as a member-in-training before they are permitted to write the exam).

See exam application and report submission deadline dates below.

International Mobility - engineers

The APEGS Council has endorsed the Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) that Engineers  Canada has negotiated. There are currently no MRAs for geoscientists. There are two
types of MRAs; academic level and professional level as explained below.

Academic Level Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs)

This type of MRA recognizes your academic preparation so that you do not have to write technical exams. We have MRAs in place with these countries:

Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, France, Hong Kong China, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Turkey, United Kingdom,
United States.

All the countries listed above except for France are included under the MRA called the Washington Accord. There is a separate agreement for France (CTI).

If you have received a bachelor degree that is accredited by the accreditation body recognized in one of these countries, and you received your degree after that country became a
member of the Washington Accord, and the institution is located in the country where the accreditation body is located, then you follow the application instructions found on the,
International Engineering Graduate page. You will not have to pay the academic assessment fee. If you do not qualify under an MRA, then you will have pay the academic
assessment fee.

You will find full details on the Washington Accord and other MRAs on this Engineers Canada Web page: http://www.ieagreements.org/accords/washington/signatories/

Professional Level Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs)

This type of MRA recognizes your academic preparation plus some of your work experience. Under these MRAs, you will still have to pass the Professional Practice Exam (on
Canadian law and ethics, not a technical exam), provide at least one year of Canadian or equivalent-to-Canadian experience reports, and provide references from three professional
engineers or geoscientists.

Engineers Canada has professional level MRAs with these countries:

Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland, Mexico, United States.

Engineers registered in Texas or Mexico should refer to the Temporary Licensee page to see if they qualify for this licencing option.
If you qualify under a professional level MRA then you should folllow the process on the International Engineering Graduate page; however you do not need to submit the
academic assessment form and fee.

For more information on these MRAs refer to the information on the Engineers Canada Web site:

Self Assessment - Geoscience

Self Assessment - Geoscience

This page explains what the purpose of the self assessment is and how to do it. The self assessment table that you must fill out is based on the document "Geoscience Knowledge
and Experience Guidelines for Professional Registration in Canada" (GKE) that is published by Geoscientists Canada.

GKE

The Canadian Geoscience Standards Board of Geoscientists Canada has developed the GKE document to described the generalized content required in an four year bachelor of
science degree in Geoscience in three different streams: Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Geoscience. The requirements for each stream are outlined in the correspondong
self assessment tables attached below.

APEGS uses these the GKE to determine if the content of your education has equivalent breadth and depth to a Canadian four year Bachelor Degree in geoscience.

Self Assessment

Why do I have to do a self assessment?

You know your academic background the best. To help the Reviewer performing the detailed academic assessment, you must complete a self assessment. The self assessment
demonstrates to the Reviewer how your academic training compares to the Canadian standard as set out in the GKE.

How do I complete the self assessment?

If you do not follow the self assessment guidelines below APEGS will ask you to redo your self assessment! This will delay your application.

You must use the course list, credits and grade from your WES course-by-course assessment to complete the self-assessment form.

Self Assessment Guidelines

1. Each table contains 5 sections. There are minimum requirements for each section, which are described in the left hand column. The detailed content of each subject is
outlined in the GKE. It is not included in the self assessment table.
2. A digital version of your self assessment must be sent to APEGS by email (erinb@apegs.sk.ca).
3. All courses listed in your self assessment must be documented on the transcripts (and course descriptions) provided as part of your application.
4. Provide only the relevant math/science and geoscience course descriptions, clearly labeled.
5. Confirm that the course descriptions have the same number and name as the courses on your transcript. If they do not, please provide an explanation so that the reviewer
will know which of your course descriptions refer to the courses on your transcript.
6. Provide page numbers for the relevant course descriptions in the notes column of the self assessment table.
7. Ensure that your application includes an interpretation of the grading system used at the institution you attended.
8. For each subject in the table, list all relevant courses you took in that subject.
9. If you are using one of your courses to cover more than one subject, assign a percentage of the course in each case (must not total more than 100%).
10. If you include courses from more than one degree, indicate which degree each course was part of in the notes section.
11. In the credit hours heading, indicate both the total hours for the course and the number of hours you are assigning to any given subject.
12. The credit hours per course much be included in the official documentation provided as part of your application (usually either on your transcript or in the course
descriptions).
13. Use the notes section to provide any additional information that you think would be helpful
14. If you do not properly link the self assessment to your transcript and course descriptions you may end up being assigned deficiencies.
15. More is not always better. Only provide the information that APEGS has requested. The Academic review Committee will not assess reports or papers looking for relevant
information.
16. If there is some content in the syllabus that you did not learn in your academic program, but you do have work experience in, then you must provide a written explanation
that clearly explains how certain work experience demonstrates your knowledge of that subject.

Please make your assessment as accurate, complete and explicit as possible, since it will be used as a guide by the person who reviews your file. This will ensure a timely and fair
assessment of your academic credentials.

Constituent Societies
https://www.apegs.ca/Portal/Pages/constituent-societies

Constituent Societies
There are several constituent societies active in Saskatchewan – the Regina Engineering Society, Saskatoon Engineering Society, Moose Jaw Engineering Society, Saskatchewan
Geological Society and CIM Geology Section (Saskatoon). The constituent societies serve the professional and social needs of the professionals within their geographic area to
support interaction between members, local technical societies, students and employers. The constituent societies typically hold a number of technical and social events, such as
noon-hour luncheons with technical presentations, annual meetings, golf tournaments, mixers, and field trips to name a few.

APEGS members are affiliated with their regional society based upon the geographic area assigned to each society. Most of the society members are also APEGS members,
however this is not always the case and some societies may have an additional membership process and fee.
