PROJECT REPORT ON

“HOW CULTURE SHAPED ME”

IN

“ALTERNATIVE CULTURE SHIFT”

Submitted To: Submitted By:

Dr Daneshwar Sharma Abaan Siddiqui
1. For me culture can be group of people sharing or accepting some common norms, beliefs, values
and customs. Some people believe that it is innate behavior (i.e. natural within you), some believe
that it is learned behavior (i.e. acquired throughout lifetime) and some believe that culture needs
to get rid of. Being Born and bought up in Muslim family, I have been accustomed to have follow
some norms set by family and religion groups but for me culture is more of to follow up the rituals
which was set in the Muslim culture and that has certainly shaped my life, my thinking process
and my perception towards people and life.

One of the most important thing is that we have never been exposed or connected so much as now
as we were 25 or 30 back years back, thanks to globalization and internet, which has opened doors
for people to get connected with each other, understand each other’s religion, culture. One can say
that religion and culture are inseparable.

think for me the oneness and very idea of god was challenged right in the beginning when I started
to learn what spirituality really meant and it was weird because I grew up my whole life never
really challenging what this God thing was it was just something that you were totally belong to
this religion and there’s God and you just have to do a whole bunch of religious stuff and somehow
you know there’s god somewhere listening and when that whole idea was thrown wide open and
all of a sudden there wasn’t a God in the sky but really there was this kind of interconnectedness
between whole of the universe that to me where I thought now it’s wearing a whole different
ballgame, a whole different thing. Now I have to be responsible for my own spirituality like I am
in it not a part of something separate from me and so the ideas of oneness non duality those with
a real kind of eye opener’s for me but I can’t say that at point I instantly got it because it wasn’t
until I spent years and years and years refining this understanding and combining that with a
meditative practice.

Joint family and nuclear family structures. Joint family is a sort of progressively far off family,
which contains gatekeepers, their adolescents, life accomplices of the children and their successors
in a single family. A nuclear family is made out of gatekeepers and their children.

1. More opportunity – Nuclear families have greater open door when stood out from a joint family
system. They don't have to worry over what various people from the nuclear family may think.
They can meander around uninhibitedly and return at whatever point without being mindful to
anyone. Vote based framework exists in a nuclear family.

2. Holding – Nuclear family relies upon the straight forward. It relies upon the foundation of basic
respect and love for each other. Parental love and family affiliation. The arrangement of
associations in a nuclear family is very

3. Kid's tendency – Youngsters of a nuclear family lean toward greater chance and less
containments. As both the gatekeepers get serious, youngsters may feel depleted great. They may
jump at the chance to go out and play with their friends or to go out for a journey. To finish such
activities, less repression is fundamental.

4. Quarrels – Nuclear families face less battles when stood out from a joint family. Generally, they
are the little battles between a couple or a youth and the watchmen

In addition, my people have a spot from different urban zones.

A large number individuals don't consider their family having a "culture." They accomplice culture
with countries and ethnic social occasions. In any case, the family? For most of us, it's just a social
affair of understood people doing what they for the most part do.

Anyway it is really this—a trademark point of view, feeling, judging, and acting—that describes
a culture. In quick and simple habits, kids are shaped by the family culture into which they are
imagined. Growing up, their doubts about what is great and terrible, extraordinary and horrendous,
reflect the feelings, characteristics and shows of the family culture. Most belittle their family's
ways, and they pass on into adulthood different outlooks and practices secured in youth.
Without a doubt, even the people who later reject all or part of the family culture every now and
again find that they are less freed from their underlying effects. Notwithstanding that they promise
themselves they will never repeat the blunders of their own family—certain social attitudes and
responses are so ingrained in family members that they continue affecting their thinking and lead,
paying little respect to whether those individuals think about such effect.

To express that families have conspicuous social orders, in any case, isn't to suggest that they are
static. Families are in a predictable state of advance as each part goes through the cycles of life
and the family itself moves beginning with one period of headway then onto the following.
Connections, births, divisions and passing's change the family star gathering and, in critical ways,
alter the family culture. At the same time, greater political, money related and social powers in
like manner infringe on the family culture. The social turmoil that began during the 1960s, for
example, changed—notwithstanding different things—moods and presumptions with respect to
the occupations of individuals. The child or youngster raised in a family wherein mother and aunts
are capable women is introduced to a by and large extraordinary family culture from the one their
grandparents knew.

Characteristics

The estimations of the family set the basic tone for the family foundation. They move the choice
of urgent well as the foundation's systems and practices. Regularly, the estimations of the
individuals who have caused the family's wealth to win. Business visionaries with the assurance
and drive to store fortunes regularly have stunning and persuading characters to facilitate.
Obviously, by then, they shape foundations in their image and as demonstrated by their
characteristics, thinking and supported style of the officials—also as they did their business.
One such man was A. Lincoln Filene, who set up the Lincoln and Therese Filene Foundation in
1946. Brought into the world not long after the passing of President Lincoln, he was named by his
pioneer watchmen to pay tribute to the fallen president. Filene remained predictable with his
namesake; for an amazing term, he held unique political points of view and followed up on them.

Innovative businessman, Lincoln Filene and his kin Edward manufactured a noteworthy retail
business, Filene's retail chain in Boston, which had been started by their father. A while later,
Lincoln Filene got together with different vendors to outline Federated Department Stores. The
Filene kin were the first to use a full-time support in their store as a delegate advantage in when
most workers couldn't deal with the expense of good restorative thought. They in like manner
propelled the creation of credit relationship to help workers with delivering purchasing power.

Lincoln Filene was as busy with the world as he was in his store. During the 1930s he set up
programs for Jewish outsiders getting away Nazi Germany with the twofold inspiration driving
helping them land positions and acknowledge being an American. During the 1950s he made the
Filene Center for Civic Participation at Tufts University, and he furthermore settled the essential
open telecom station in Boston.

Fifty years after the family foundation was built up, Filene's social and political obligations still
win. Lincoln Filene would be fulfilled that today, people from the third, fourth and fifth times of
the family serve beside one another on the load up and on program boards finishing the work he
began on issues including metro guidance, open telecom and occupation getting ready.

Norms

Norms are the spoken and certain standards of social orders. Strengthened after some time, they
fill in as intangible constraints on family members' direct. Gauges set standards for how family
members dress, talk and act. They also set cutoff focuses on what is sensible or impermissible lead
under different conditions and conditions. An option that is other than rules of habits, principles
outfit family members with a guide for living both inside the home and without.

"In our family, incredible propensities mean everything "As youths, my sister and I learned not to
talk all the more noisily, never to present individual requests, and to keep up a key good ways from
difference regardless. In case we mishandled those standards, my people would simply need to
create a scene to reveal to us that our direct was missing the goal."

Customs

All families have customs that are passed down beginning with one age then onto the following.
Previously, when the more far off family all lived in one spot, shows were consolidated with the
calendars of step by step life and kept alive by family more seasoned people. As family branches
veered and the more established people passed on, the traditions much of the time kicked the can
with them.

Not all shows are formal practices or merriments; some are standard techniques for doing things
that go unchallenged. Normally family members think and act in explicit habits since "that is the
methods by which it's always been." When families set up family foundations, they generally
structure those foundations according to comparable shows. Foundations that don't have private
work environments, for example, as often as possible hold get-togethers in the home of the family
more established people (the standard social event place). Correspondingly, families with a custom
of vesting master for business and adventure decisions exclusively in the hands of the men in the
family or the family seniors generally set up a practically identical dynamic framework in the
foundation.
Shows respected inside the setting of the home, regardless, may be tried when persevered to the
foundation. Meeting up under different conditions and in an altogether phenomenal field, family
members who have been banished from essential administration may never again be as prepared
to submit to the normal traditions when they become trustees. To a great extent, even the family
boss themselves see that another organization structure is required for the foundation.

Congruity

Family social orders change colossally in their opposition of complexities. Some intrigue hard and
fast dedication to the estimations of the lifestyle and regard any disparity from the standard as
threatening to the flourishing of the family. Some even dare to evacuate all contact with family
members who handle different techniques for thinking or styles of living.

Exactly when gatherings of this social kind set up foundations, the power a comparative
enthusiasm for congruity on trustees. Usually, little if any talk occurs, and new voices or
perspectives on issues are dispirited. One trustee, the granddaughter of the coordinator of a huge
foundation in the South, describes her experience of joining the board when she was well into
middle age. Hitched at age nineteen to escape what she depicted as a seriously authentic family
life, she lived on the West Coast until her partition a long time earlier. Back in her old
neighborhood, she was on edge to serve on the family board, considering the to be as a way to deal
with reintegrate into the system.

How Money Affects Happiness

The focal issue is, "Would cash have the option to buy euphoria?" There's no clear answer. There
is a strong association among wealth and euphoria, the maker’s state: "Rich people and nations are
more cheerful than their poor accomplices; don't let anyone let you know in a sudden manner."
But they note that money's impact on fulfillment isn't as huge as you may might presume. If you
have articles of clothing to wear, sustenance to eat, and a housetop over your head, extended
optional capital has just a little impact on your sentiment of thriving.

To put it another way, in the event that you're living underneath the dejection line ($22,050 yearly
pay for a gathering of four out of 2009), an extra $5,000 a year can have a monstrous impact in
your ecstasy. Of course, if your family gains $70,000 consistently, $5,000 may be a welcome prize,
yet it won't significantly change you.

Thusly, really, money can get some fulfillment, anyway as you'll see, it's just one piece of the
enigma. In addition, there's a certified risk that extended compensation can truly make you sad—
if you’re aching to experience creates with it. However, this shouldn't infer that you have to live
like a minister. The key is finding an amicability between having near nothing and having
unnecessarily—and that is no basic task.

It's Not About the Money

In case colossal riches won't bring you genuine quietness, what will?

In a 2005 issue of the Review of General Psychology, Sonja Lyubomirsky, Kennon Sheldon, and
David Schkade looked stretches of research to comprehend what adds to "unending fulfillment"
(rather than brief euphoria). In perspective on their diagram, they thought of a three-segment
model:

o About half of your delight is common. Each individual seems to have a fulfillment "set
point," which speaks to commonly 50% of your sentiment of success. Since this set point is
inherited, it's hard to change.
o Another 10% of joy relies upon conditions—external factors outside your capacity to
control. These join natural qualities like age, race, nationality, and sex, similarly as things like
marital status, word related status, proficient steadiness, and pay. Your budgetary condition is a
bit of this 10%—anyway only a segment—which infers it speaks to just a modest quantity of your
supreme fulfillment.

o The last 40% of fulfillment starts from deliberate development—the things you choose to
do. Despite the fact that conditions come to pass, purposeful activity happens when you act by
doing things like working out, looking for after significant destinations, or keeping a gratefulness
journal.

As demonstrated by the makers, since conditions—including your cash related situation—expect

such a little activity in your general bliss, it looks good to help your delight through intentional
activity, by controlling the things you can and neglecting those you cant

Disregarding the way that your money related situation accept only a little activity in your general
fulfillment, a large number individuals trust it's a higher need than that. Thusly, various Americans
experience their lives gaining ground toward more money and resources—yet find that this
authenticity makes them less perky.

In the event that you're up to speed in the purposeless every day presence, you may be overseeing
things like Visa commitment, living check to check, fighting with your friend over money, and
working a livelihood you severely dislike. These issues all originate from one issue:
nonappearance of control. Right when you have a tendency that you have no impact over money,
you're concerned and pushed. By accepting accountability for your records, you can discard an
impressive part of these stressors and be progressively cheerful. Wealth gives you choices and
makes it less difficult to focus on things that can make you content.
Continuing with a Rich Life

Living sumptuously suggests comprehending what to contribute your time, money, and
essentialness on—and what to dismiss. Since you can't have everything, you have to sort out. This
suggests consuming money on things that issue to you—and keeping down on things that don't.

Specialists all things considered agree that a genuine presence well-lived is rich in:

o Security. It's hard to be happy when you're continually struggling with how to deal with
the tabs. In case you have money, you don't have to worry over those things. (Regardless, as you
right now know, you don't should be rich to be playful.) By living underneath your strategies and
keeping up a vital good ways from commitment, you can administer your life.

 Relationships. Authentic wealth starts from associations, not from dollars and pennies.
Well-off or poor, people with at any rate five dear allies are all the more appropriate to
delineate themselves as happy as those with less. A long stretch, treasuring affiliation
goes inseparable with this. Additionally, as you'll adjust later (Social Capital), social
capital can be worth as much as cash related capital.

About Islam

Yes I am believe in god. Islam, like Christianity, Judaism and other world religions, varies in its
interpretations, rituals and practices. It is true that Muslims share certain fundamental beliefs, such
as those expressed in the shahada, the profession of faith: there is only one God and that
Muhammad is His Prophet to whom was revealed the Qur’an. Yet, as the religion evolved after
Muhammad’s death and spread beyond Arabia into many different regions and cultures, ranging
from Bosnia and China to Yemen and Zanzibar, it came to be interpreted in diverse ways. This
diversity was the result of the core set of religious beliefs interacting in complex ways with the
many different contexts in which Muslims lived. Each of these contexts is defined by multiple
factors, including its history, cultural traditions, its social, economic, political structures, and its
geography and physical location in the world. Recognizing this reality, Abdol Karim Soroush, a
contemporary Iranian intellectual, states, “There is no such thing as a “pure” Islam or an a-
historical Islam that is outside the process of historical development. The actual lived experience
of Islam has always been culturally and historically specific, and bound by the immediate
circumstances of its location in time and space. If we were to take a snapshot of Islam as it is lived
today, it would reveal a diversity of lived experiences which are all different, yet existing
simultaneously.” (As quoted in Farish Noor, New Voices of Islam, 2002, 15-16).

Keeping this historical reality in mind, it is evident that the story of Islam involves peoples of
many different races, ethnicities and cultures, many literatures and languages, with many histories,
and a myriad of interpretations some of which may in conflict with each other. Not surprisingly,
in view of this diversity, the late Edward Said, University Professor of English at Columbia
University and a cultural and literary critic, wrote, “The problems facing anyone attempting to say
anything intelligible, useful, or accurate about Islam are legion. One should therefore begin by
speaking of Islam’s rather than Islam (as the scholar Aziz al-Azmeh does in his excellent
book Islams and Modernities), and then go on to specify which kind, during which particular time,
one is speaking about.” He goes on to say that keeping in mind the complexity and variety of
concrete human experience, “it is much more sensible to try to talk about different kinds of Islam,
at different moments, for different peoples, in different fields…..once one gets a tiny step beyond
core beliefs (since even those are very hard to reduce to a simple set of doctrinal rules) and the
centrality of the Koran [Qur’an], one has entered an astoundingly complicated world whose
enormous – one might even say unthinkable – collective history alone has yet to be written.”
(“Impossible Histories: Why the many Islam’s cannot be simplified,” Harper’s Magazine, July
2002, 69-74).

The Islamic Cultural Studies course is an invitation to explore a small slice of the rich and dazzling
diversity that characterizes the worlds of Islam by examining the dynamic interaction between
religious beliefs and practices and their political, economic, social, literary, and artistic contexts
across time and space. Besides exposure to new content material, the course is also intended to
equip you with the tools to analyze and think critically about what it means to study not only Islam,
but any other religious tradition in its cultural contexts. In this broader sense, this course is about
how to study religion in an academic context. The underlying premise of the course – knowledge
is culturally constructed – is as applicable to the study of the Christian, Jewish, Buddhist or Hindu
traditions as it is to the study of Islam. To properly understand the role of religions in human
societies, the course contends, we must go beyond descriptive summaries of beliefs and practices
and look at them as a living and dynamic traditions that are constantly changing according to
context and circumstance of their adherents. Ultimately, this course will help provide you with
greater literacy about the study of religion in general and better awareness of the complexities
involved in such study.

No doubt believers of many faiths who, being comfortable with understanding their religion from
a devotional perspective, will have difficulties in coming to terms with the scholarly and analytical
approach we have discussed above. Some Muslims, for instance, may insist that there is only one
Islam and differences, if they exist, are superficial. But this conception is itself influenced by a
certain cultural context. Such Muslims are not alone in this conception for there are non-Muslims
who also conceive of Islam as one unified, homogeneous monolith. More recently, particularly
after 9/11, a range of historians, political scientists, journalists, public intellectuals have also
considered Islam as one mega-civilizational block, stretching across the globe, that is in conflict
with the so-called West which they also conceive as a self-contained and unified civilization. The
readings selected for Session One from Carl Ernst’s book, Following Muhammad, begin with a
critical examination of the manner in which conceptions of Islam, and for that matter notions of
“religion,” are culturally and politically constructed by Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

The readings from Following Muhammad also examine the Sources of the Islamic tradition,
providing a brief overview of the crucial role that Muhammad as Prophet of Islam and the Qur’an,
as scripture of Islam, play in defining Muslim religious, social and political consciousness. We
will explore each of these sources in greater detail in Sessions Two, Three and Four. The second
set of readings, from Historical Atlas of Islam, after a brief summary of foundational beliefs and
practices, survey the historical expansion of Arab Muslim imperial rule beyond the Arabian
Peninsula, covering the period between 600 to 1100 CE. Maps illustrate how the Islamic faith
began in the Arabic world but spread to other areas where local culture, geography, language and
ethnicity influenced beliefs and practices. The establishment of Arab rule in the Middle East led
to the development of trade routes that were controlled by Muslim merchants, bringing in much
wealth to the rapidly growing empires. With political and economic expansion, the Arabic
language evolved into an international language of administration, culture, learning and
commerce. As Arab power extended over more areas in the Middle East and the Mediterranean
region, non-Arab traditions, particularly the Persian and the Greco-Roman, were integrated. The
result was a cosmopolitan civilization in which Arabic culture played an important part but in
which also participated many different ethnic and religious groups. The historical survey
concludes with a brief discussion of the Crusades and the attempts by knights from the Christian
kingdoms of the Latin West (including England, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy and France) to wrest
political control of the Holy Land from Muslim rulers, damaging the positive relations that had
previously existed between Muslims and Eastern Orthodox Christians in the Middle East.

political impact in the ventures as that falls apart the general nature of work and time span of
undertakings are hampered.

25. The kids, grown-ups and old matured individuals, in short every age of the general public
ought to have the advantage of various plans of the legislature.

26. Also, the common activities or enormous undertakings of the administration which
includes the cash of the individuals ought to be executed and finished in a time span way with
the goal that the expense and different assets ought to be utilized in a productive manner.
