1.4 DESIGN / PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Performance Requirements: Provide portable, non-penetrating, equipment


support platforms, duct supports, crossover ramps, pipe and conduit supports which
have been manufactured, fabricated and installed to withstand loads, and to
maintain performance criteria without defects, damage or failure.

B. Design platform assemblies and attachments to resist the following loads:


1. Floor Live and dead loads with 1/180 of span maximum deflection.
2. Live Loads: As indicated on Drawings.
3. Dead Loads: Actual weight of materials incorporated into Work.

C. Wind Load: As calculated in accordance with applicable code.

D. Seismic Loads: As calculated in accordance with applicable code.

E. Design supports to limit pipe and/or conduit deflection to L/240, not to exceed
10 feet (3 m) on center.

1.5 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Design Requirements:
1. Prefabricated, engineered support systems designed specifically for
use on roofing without adhesive, roof penetrations, flashings or damage to
roofing system.
2. Prefabricated, watertight mechanically anchored, engineered support
systems designed specifically for use on roofing.

1.6 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

B. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used,


including:
1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
3. Installation methods.

C. Shop Drawings: Indicate layout, base mounting details, support components


and methods of installation.

D. Verification Samples: Two samples, full size base and frame and fastener
sections minimum size 12 inches (301 mm) long, representing actual product and
finish.

E. Manufacturer's Certificates: Certify products meet or exceed specified


requirements.

1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in the manufacturing of


pipe support systems and rooftop equipment support platforms.

B. Installer Qualifications: Company approved by manufacturer and with not less


than 5 years of experience in installation of pipe support systems.

C. Pre-Installation Meeting: After approval of submittals, but before beginning


installation, conduct a meeting at project site attended by Architect, Contractor,
installers of roofing, and mechanical and electrical piping and equipment to be
installed in support system.
1. Purpose of meeting is to describe in detail the installation process and
to establish agreement, coordination, and responsibilities.
2. Prepare detailed meeting report and distribute copies to Architect and
all attendees.

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for


installation.

B. Store materials in a dry, weathertight location.

1.9 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate Work with other operations and installation of adjacent materials


to avoid damage to installed insulation and membrane materials.

PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS

B. Substitutions: Not permitted.

C. Requests for substitutions will be considered in accordance with provisions of


Section 01600.

2.2 MATERIALS - GENERAL

A. Non-Penetrating Base Material: Injected molded polypropylene with molded


insert for square tubing and two threaded rod couplings molded in.

B. Steel Frames:
1. Steel channel frame section, galvanized conforming to ASTM A 653.
2. Steel beams shall conform to ASTM A 572, grade 50.
3. Steel plates and angles shall conform to ASTM A 36.
4. Hollow Structural Sections: Steel tubing conforming to ASTM A 501.

C. Grating: 1 inch (25.5 mm) by 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) bar grating, 19-W-4 carbon
steel, ends capped with 1 inch (25.5 mm) 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) steel flat bar, welded,
hot-dipped uniform zinc coating after fabrication.

D. Handrail Framing: 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) schedule 40 pipe, welded, hot-dipped
uniform zinc coating after fabrication.

E. Hangers: Clevis and/or Band type as per pipe requirements.

F. Accessories: Cadmium plated threaded rods, clamps, nuts, bolts and


washers.

G. Rollers: Non-Binding Heavy-Duty SBR Rubber.

2.3 EQUIPMENT SUPPORTS

A. Non-Penetrating Roof Equipment Support System: Engineered prefabricated


support system custom designed by Advanced Support Products to be installed on
roof without adhesives, roof penetrations, flashings or damage to roofing system.
1. Base: Injected molded polypropylene, 3 inches (76 mm) high by 17
inches (432 mm) in diameter, designed for weight disbursement, with molded
insert for square tubing and two threaded rod couplings molded in for support
of structural steel frame.
2. Design to fit the roof slope as required.

B. Mechanically Fastened Steel Base System: Engineered prefabricated support


system custom designed by Advanced Support Products to be mechanically
fastened to comply with design/performance requirements.
1. Base shall consist of a 12 inches (305 mm) square galvanized steel
plate, 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick, with four holes for approved anchoring with
galvanized square tubing welded to plate as receiver for support of structural
steel frame with the opening covered.
2. Design to fit the roof slope as required.
3. Coordinate flashing and waterproofing of the support with Section
07700 Membrane Roofing.

2.4 EQUIPMENT PLATFORMS

A. Equipment Platform: Equipment platform to support telecommunications
equipment, generators, HVAC equipment or miscellaneous equipment use
equipment platform, custom designed by Advanced Support Products for either
rooftop or land site applications. Equipment platforms shall be constructed as
follows:
1. Non-Penetrating Roof Equipment Support System:
a. Design to support frame, utilize base with no roof penetrations.
b. Frame fabricated of steel angle or channel and square tubing or
strut as required to suit design loads.
c. Deck fabricated of steel grating attached with hardware,
provided.
d. Handrails fabricated of 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) galvanized steel pipe,
as required.
e. Design to include the number and spacing of bases required to
support the weight of the equipment and load requirements.
2. Mechanically Fastened Steel Base System:
a. Design to support frame, utilizing 12 inch (305 mm) square
galvanized steel plate, 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick, with four holes for
anchoring to roof system.
b. Frame fabricated of steel I-beam or channel, connections
conforming to the AISC Manual of Steel Construction.
c. Deck fabricated of steel grating, attached with hardware,
provided.
d. Handrails made fabricated of 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) pipe, as
required.
e. Equipment platform designed to support weight of the equipment
based on load requirements.

2.5 PIPE AND DUCT SUPPORTS:

A. Conduit or Pipe Up to 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) Diameter: Model # SS1000B Pipe
Support with Strut Bar. Use with circular base with double sided strut inserted into
center cavity. Use strut clamps to secure pipe.

B. Conduit or Pipe Up to up to 8 inch (203 mm) Diameter Without Height


Adjustment: Model # SS1000 Pipe Support. Use with circular base with 12 gauge
framing channel, 18 inches long, attached directly to base using 1/2 inch (12.5 mm)
bolts. Strut clamps may be used as option for securing pipe.

C. Conduit or Pipe Up to up to 8 inch (203 mm) Diameter With Height


Adjustment: Model # SS1000A Adjustable Pipe Support. Use with circular base with
12 gauge framing channel, 18 inches long and attached to circular base using 1/2
inch (12.5 mm) threaded rods, 12 inches (305 mm) long, with washers and nuts.
Height of channel can be adjusted along the length of the threaded rods. Strut
clamps are recommended to hold piping or conduit in place.

D. Water or Gas Piping Up to 8 inch (203 mm) Diameter With Roller Support:
Model # SS1000R Pipe Support with Roller. Use with circular base with SBR heavy-
duty rubber roller assembly attached directly to base with 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) bolts.

E. Water or Gas Piping Up to 8 inch Diameter With Roller Support and Height
Adjustment: Model # SS1000RA Pipe Support with Adjustable Roller. Use with
circular base with SBR heavy-duty rubber roller assembly attached to circular base

using 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rods, 12 inches (305 mm) long, with washers and
nuts. Height of roller assembly can be adjusted along the length of the 1/2 inch (12.5
mm) threaded rods.

F. Piping in Multiple Runs:


1. Cross Brace Bridge Model SS2000/36. Fabricated of two circular bases
and framing channel 36 inches long attached directly to the bases using 1/2
inch (12.5 mm) bolts or 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rods with washers and
nuts, 12 inches (305 mm) long, Height of framing channel can be adjusted
along the length of the 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rod. Use with strut clamps
or roller accessories as required.
2. Cross Brace Bridge Model SS2000/48. Fabricated of two circular bases
and framing channel 48 inches (1219 mm) long attached directly to the bases
using 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) bolts or 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rods with
washers and nuts, 12 inches (305 mm) long, Height of framing channel can
be adjusted along the length of the 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rod. Use with
strut clamps or roller accessories as required.
3. Cross Brace Bridge Model SS2000/60. Fabricated of two circular bases
and framing channel 60 inches (1524 mm) long attached directly to the bases
using 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) bolts or 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rods with
washers and nuts, 12 inches l(12.5 mm) long, Height of framing channel can
be adjusted along the length of the 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rod. Use with
strut clamps or roller accessories as required.

G. Conduit or Pipe Up to up to 4 inch (102 mm) Diameter When Height


Adjustment or Pipe Suspension is Required:
1. Model # SS1000H Hanging Pipe Support for single pipe. Use with
circular base with 12 gauge framing channel, 18 inches (457 mm) long,
attached to base using 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rods, 12 inches (305 mm)
long, with one hanger attached to channel using 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded
rod to suspend piping at heights beginning at 3 inches (76 mm). Height of
channel can be adjusted along the length of the threaded rods. Height of
hanger can be adjusted along the length of the threaded rod.
2. SS1000T Hanging Pipe Support Tee for two pipes. Use with circular
base with 12 gauge framing channel formed to make a "T" shape with two
hangers attached to channel using 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) threaded rods on each
side of the "T" to suspend piping at heights beginning at 3 inches (76 mm).
Height of hanger can be adjusted along the length of the threaded rods.

H. Piping in Multiple Runs Up to 12 inch (305 mm) Diameter When Height


Adjustment or Pipe Suspension is Required:
1. SS4000P Adjustable Support Bridge is made of four circular bases and
12 gauge framing channel formed to make one "H" shaped support with
crossbar.
2. SS6000P Adjustable Support Bridge is made of six circular bases and
12 gauge framing channel formed to make two "H" shaped supports with
crossbar.
3. SS8000P Adjustable Support Bridge is made of eight circular bases
and 12 gauge framing channel formed to make three "H" shaped supports
with crossbar.
4. Crossbar height is adjustable: Provide in the following length:
a. 18 inches (457 mm).
b. 24 inches (610 mm).

c. 36 inches (914 mm).
d. 48 inches (1219 mm).
5. Use with strut clamps or roller accessories.
6. Use with hanger supports to suspend water or gas piping at various
heights.
a. Hanger supports attached to support frame using 1/2 inch (12.5
mm) threaded rods. Hangers offer complete height adjustments along
the length of threaded rods.

I. HVAC Duct and Cable Tray Supports: use Model # SS2000D Duct Support.
Use with two circular bases with 12 gauge framing channel formed to make an "H"
shaped support. Framing channel is adjustable in both height and width.

J. Light Weight HVAC Equipment Supports:


1. Model #SS1000EC Equipment Support Corner used with one circular
base and 12 gauge Unistrut P9000 and P9200 with 6 inch (152 mm)
galvanized steel support bracket formed for a corner.
2. Model #SS1000E Equipment Support Stand. SS1000E is one circular
base and 12 gauge Unistrut P9000 and P9200 with 6 inch (152 mm)
galvanized steel support bracket.

K. Heavier HVAC Equipment Supports: Provide equipment platform designed by


to support the weight of the equipment and load requirements indicated on the
Drawings.
1. Equipment platform consists of circular bases supporting a structural
steel frame
2. Equipment platform consists of galvanized steel plates, with four holes
for approved anchoring and supporting a structural steel frame.

2.6 FABRICATION

A. Fit and shop assemble in largest practical sections, for delivery to site and
field bolted assembly.

B. Fabricate components with joints tightly fitted and secured.

C. Supply components required for anchorage of fabrications.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B. Verify that roof surface is smooth and clean.

C. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify


Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.

B. Clean surfaces to receive supports removing any loose gravel and any
foreign matter.

C. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for


achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and approved shop


drawings.

B. Allow for erection loads, and for sufficient temporary bracing to maintain
fabrications safe, plumb, and in alignment until completion of erection and
installation of permanent bracing.

C. Non-Penetrating Supports:
1. Accurately locate and align pre-fabricated supports.
2. Isolation pads are not required under circular bases.
3. Should the roofing manufacturer require a separation sheet between
the roof and the support system, place a separation sheet or protective pad
conforming to the existing roof manufacturer's system under circular bases.
Do not adhere bases to the roof system.

D. Mechanical Supports:
1. Accurately locate and align pre-fabricated supports.
2. Coordinate flashing and waterproofing of the support with Section
07700 Membrane Roofing.

E. If required, insert frame structures into circular bases as indicated by


manufacturer's instructions.

F. Adjust height of each strut or channel and hanger or roller to its required
height and tighten with nut, but do not over-tighten. Check each support for equal
weight disbursement. Correct if necessary.

G. After erection, touch up abrasions to match shop finishes.

H. Remove any unused materials and packaging from job site.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Underlayment manufacturers representative to verify that installation of


underlayment and perimeter isolation barrier is in conformance to the manufacturer's
recommendations as required under warrantee provisions.

3.5 PROTECTION

A. Protect installed products until completion of project.

B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.

7.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. A lightweight, non-asbestos, bio-soluble, high temperature, inorganic, foil


encapsulated insulation blanket. The duct wrap system shall be a tested and listed
system evaluated for a 2-hour fire resistance rating on a ventilation air duct
assembly. Testing shall be conducted by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
1. Performance Requirements:
a. Single Layer System for two hour fire rating.
b. 2-hour fire resistive enclosure assembly tested per ISO 6944.
c. Firestop tested per ASTM E 814, 2 Hour F and T Ratings.
d. Meets 25/50 Flame and Smoke Ratings per ASTM E 84.

B. A lightweight, non-asbestos, bio-soluble, high temperature, inorganic, foil


encapsulated insulation blanket. The plenum insulation system shall be tested and
listed to provide a non combustible rating for combustible items located in air
plenums.
1. Performance Requirements:
a. Single Layer System of 1/2 inch (13 mm) thick material.
b. Meets UL 1887 test criteria for visible flame and smoke
characteristics.

c. Meets 25/50 Flame and Smoke Ratings per ASTM E 84.
d. Insulation and combustible item must be tested as an assembly.

C. A lightweight, non-asbestos, bio-soluble, high temperature, inorganic, foil


encapsulated insulation blanket. The blanket material must capable of performing at
2000 degree F (1093 degree C) matching the internal and external fire test
temperature for grease ducts. The duct wrap system shall be a tested and listed
system evaluated for reduced clearances to combustibles as an alternative to a
grease duct, with a two-hour fire rated shaft enclosure. Testing shall be conducted
at a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
1. Performance Requirements:
a. Two-layer system of 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) 6 pcf (96 kg/m3)
material.
b. Zero clearance to combustibles across the entire surface of the
blanket material per internal fire tests of ASTM E 2336.
c. 2-hour fire resistive enclosure assembly per ASTM E 119.
d. Firestop tested per ASTM E 814, 2 Hour F and T Ratings.
e. Meets 25/50 flame and smoke ratings per ASTM E 84.

7.5 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

B. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used,


including:
1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
3. Installation methods.

C. Submit certification and installation documentation showing system


performance and Code compliance.

7.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Manufacturer capable of providing field service


representation during installation.

B. Fabricator Qualifications: Fabrication performed in quality controlled


manufacturing environment by experienced fabricators with references indicating
multiple satisfactory experiences fabricating high temperature insulation blanket as
required for this project.

C. Installer Qualifications: Installer experienced in performing work of this section


who has specialized in installation of work similar to that required for this project.

D. Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation


techniques and application workmanship.
1. Finish areas designated by Architect.
2. Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and
sheen are approved by Architect.
3. Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

E. Preinstallation Meetings: Conduct preinstallation meeting to verify project
requirements, manufacturer's installation instructions and manufacturer's warranty
requirements. Comply with Division 01 Project Management and Coordination
(Project Meetings).

7.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver materials in original unopened packages, clearly marked with


manufacturer's name, product designation, manufacturer's lot numbers and
appropriate third party classification listings.

B. Store in a covered dry environment.

C. Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with


solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having
jurisdiction.

7.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation)


within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install
products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

3. Flexible, fully encapsulated blanket material, two-layer system to

8.5 ACCESS DOORS

2. Gasket: 1/2 inch (13 mm) Unfaced FyreWrap or ceramic fiber blanket.

B. Access Door: Ductmate Ultimate prefabricated 16 gauge steel.

C. Access Door: Ductmate F2 prefabricated 16 gauge steel.

PART 9 EXECUTION
9.1 EXAMINATION

A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify

Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

9.2 PREPARATION

A. Inspect and verify that all surfaces are smooth, dry, clean and free from dust,
debris, or other loose materials. Surfaces must be dry before the application of
insulation materials.

B. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.

C. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for


achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

9.3 INSTALLATION

A. Duct Insulation (HVAC Ducts):


1. Single-Layer System: Apply single layer encapsulated insulation
directly to duct surface.
2. Install with minimum 3 inch (76mm) material joint overlap.
3. Seal cut edges with aluminum foil tape
4. Attachment for duct widths of 24 inches (610 mm) or less:
a. Temporarily secure duct insulation with 1 inch (25.4 mm) wide
filament tape located 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) from blanket edge and on
10-1/2 inch (267 mm) centers.
b. Permanently attach blanket with carbon steel or stainless steel
banding located 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) from blanket edge and on 10-1/2
inch (267 mm) centers.
c. Tighten steel bands to secure insulation firmly without damaging
blanket.
5. Attachment for duct widths greater than 24 inches (610 mm):
a. Weld 12 gauge steel insulation pins to underside of horizontal
runs and backside of vertical runs in rows spaced maximum 10 1/2
inches (267 mm) on center along duct length, 6 inches - 12 inches (152
- 305 mm) from duct edges.
b. Space pins 12 inches (305 mm) on center across duct width.
c. Impale insulation over pins and hold in place with 2-1/2 inch (64
mm) square galvanized steel speed clips (washers).
d. Turn down or cut off exposed pin ends.

B. Plenum Insulation:
1. Apply single layer encapsulated insulation directly to surface of
combustible item.
2. Cut insulation lengths to wrap around combustible item providing 1 inch
(25.4 mm) longitudinal overlap.
3. Seal cut edges with aluminum foil tape.
4. Provide 1 inch (25.4 mm) perimeter overlap with adjacent insulation
blanket.
5. Temporarily secure plenum insulation with 1 inch (25.4 mm) wide
filament tape, located 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) from blanket edge and on 11 inch
(280 mm) centers.
6. Permanently attach insulation with steel tie wire or banding on
maximum 11 inch centers (279 mm).

7. Tighten wire or banding to secure insulation firmly without damaging
blanket.

C. Duct Insulation (Grease and Hazardous Exhaust Ducts):


1. Two-Layer System: Apply two-layers of encapsulated insulation
directly on duct surface.
2. Install first layer with transverse material compression joints. Install first
layer longitudinal joints with minimum 3 inch (76mm) material joint overlaps.
3. Install second layer with minimum 3 inch (76mm) material joint
overlaps, offset minimum of 12 inches (305mm) from first layer joints.
4. Seal cut edges with aluminum foil tape.
5. Transverse material joints may be installed using any of the following
techniques:
a. Telescope overlap - insulation installed by leaving one edge
exposed and overlapping other edge with adjacent blanket.
b. Checkerboard overlap - overlap both edges of alternating
blanket, leaving both edges of others exposed.
c. Butt Joint & collar - cover blanket butt edges with 6 inch
(152mm) blanket collar centered on material joint.
6. Banding for duct widths 24 inches (610 mm) or less:
a. Temporarily secure insulation with filament tape.
b. Place carbon steel or stainless steel bands (minimum 1/2 inch
(12.7 mm) wide, nominal 0.015 inch (0.4 mm) thick) 1-1/2 inches (38
mm) from edge of overlap joints.
c. Place bands at maximum 10-1/2 inches (267 mm) on center in
field between overlaps.
d. Tighten steel bands to secure insulation firmly without damaging
blanket.
7. Pins and Banding for duct widths greater than 24 inches (610 mm) up
through 48 inches (1220 mm):
a. Weld 12 gauge steel insulation pins to underside of horizontal
runs and backside of vertical runs in rows spaced maximum 10-1/2
inches (267 mm) on center along duct length.
b. Space pins 12 inches (305 mm) on center across duct width and
1-1/2 inches (38 mm) from duct edges.
c. Impale insulation over pins and hold in place with 2-1/2 inch (64
mm) square galvanized steel speed clips (washers).
d. Secure insulation to duct with filament tape as needed.
e. Turn down or cut off exposed pin ends.
f. Locate carbon steel or stainless steel bands (minimum 1/2 inch
(12.7 mm) wide, nominal 0.015 inch (0.4 mm) thick) 1-1/2 inches (38
mm) from edge of overlap joints.
g. Space remaining bands at midpoint between overlap joints or at
10-1/2 inches (267 mm) oc. Tighten steel bands to secure insulation
firmly without damaging blanket.
8. Pins for ducts wider than 48 inches (1220 mm):
a. Weld 12 gauge steel insulation pins on all sides of duct in rows
spaced maximum 10 1/2 inches (267 mm) on center along duct length.
b. Space pins 8 inches (203 mm) on center around duct and 5
inches (127 mm) from duct edges. Center insulation overlaps on pins.
c. Impale insulation over pins and hold in place with 2-1/2 inch (64

mm) square galvanized steel speed clips (washers).
d. Turn down or cut off exposed pin ends.
9. Vertical Ductwork: Apply insulation in continuous length parallel to
vertical length of duct with overlaps minimum of 6 inches (152 mm) from duct
corners. Space pins 8 inches (203 mm) on center at centerline of vertically
oriented overlaps and on maximum 12 inch (305 mm) columns.

9.4 ACCESS DOORS

A. Field-Fabricated:
1. Cut and remove installed insulation to dimension 2 inches (51 mm)
larger than opening.
2. Seal cut edges of remaining insulation with aluminum foil tape.
3. Cut access opening in duct.
4. 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) diameter threaded rod to corners of opening.
5. Cover rods with hollow steel tubes.
6. Cut 16 gauge cover plate with dimensions 2 inches (51 mm) larger
than opening.
7. Drill holes in cover plate to match rod pattern.
8. Place 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) ceramic fiber or unfaced FyreWrap blanket
gasket between duct and access door cover.
9. Install cover over rods.
10. Single Layer: Weld 4 steel insulation pins to outside of door panel, 1
inch (25.4 mm) from corners.
11. Double Layer: Weld 5 steel insulation pins to outside of door panel, 1
inch (25.4 mm) from corners.
12. Cut first insulation piece to size of access door, seal cut edges with
aluminum foil tape and install over pins within cutout area.
13. Cut second insulation piece with dimensions 2 inches (51 mm) larger
than first piece, seal cut edges with aluminum foil tape and install over pins.
14. Cut third insulation piece (for 2-Layer grease duct systems only) with
dimensions 2 inches (51 mm) larger than second piece, seal cut edges with
aluminum foil tape and install over pins.
15. Place washers on pins and bend over excess pin lengths.
16. Place washers on threaded rods and secure with nuts.
B. Pre-fabricated: Ductmate Industries - Ultimate and F-2 access door to be
prefabricated from 16 gauge steel and installed as one unit.

9.5 MAINTENANCE

A. Cut banding or insulation washers on damaged blanket areas and remove.

B. Cut and remove damaged blanket.

C. Cut new blanket piece with exact dimensions as that removed and install on
ductwork in same configuration as previously used in compliance with required
material overlaps and attachment methods.

D. Ensure same minimum overlap is created.

E. Replace permanent attachment.

9.6 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Have manufacturer of products supplied under this Section review Work


involved in handling, installation/application and protection of its products, and
submit written reports in acceptable format to verify compliance of Work with
Contract.

B. Schedule site visits to review Work as installation is about to begin.

9.7 PROTECTION

A. Protect installed products until completion of project.

B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.

10.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS


A. Listing Agency: Provide products that are listed by at least one the following:
1. Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), in "Fire Resistance Directory"
category XHEZ or XHBN as appropriate.
2. Omega Point Laboratories (OPL), in "Directory of Listed Products,
Through Penetration Fire Resistance Directory."
3. Any other qualified independent testing and inspection agency that
conducts periodic follow-up inspections and is acceptable to authorities
having jurisdiction.

B. Furnish products identical to those tested for classification by listing agency.

C. Mark product packing with classification marking of listing agency.

D. Firestopping Exposed to View: Provide products with flame spread index of


less than 25 and smoke developed index of less than 450, when tested in
accordance with ASTM E 84.

E. Firestopping Exposed to View, Traffic, Moisture, or Physical Damage:


Provide products that after curing do not deteriorate when exposed to those
conditions during and after construction.

F. Materials: Use only products specifically listed for use in listed systems.

G. Compatibility: Provide products that are compatible with each other, with the
substrates forming openings, and with the items, if any, penetrating the firestopping,
under the conditions represented by this project, based on testing and field
performance demonstrated by manufacturer.

H. Firestopping material must be asbestos-free and capable of maintaining an


effective barrier against flame, smoke and gases in compliance with the
requirements of ASTM and UL standards cited in this section.

I. Firestopping materials must meet and be acceptable for use by all building
codes and NFPA codes cited in this section.

J. Materials must be suitable for the firestopping of penetrations made by steel,


glass, plastic and insulated pipe.

K. Firestop Listings: The following is only a partial list of ASTM E 814 tested
through-penetration designs. Consult with the manufacturer for more information.

L. Fire Rating: All duct wraps must be One (1) hour rated, but in no case less
than the rating of any time-rated assemblies which are penetrated.

than the rating of any time-rated assemblies which are penetrated.

10.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

B. Shop Drawings: For each different firestopping configuration, provide the


following:
1. Listing agency's detailed drawing showing opening, penetrating items,
and firestopping materials, identified with listing agency's name and number
or designation, fire rating achieved, and date of listing.
2. Identify which rated assembly each system is to be used in.
3. Any installation instructions that are not included on the detailed
drawing.
4. For proposed systems that do not conform strictly to the listing, submit
listing agency's drawing marked to show modifications and stamped approved
by firestop system manufacturer's fire protection engineer.
5. Submit listing agency's test report showing compliance with
requirements, based on testing of current products.

C. Product Certificates: Submit certificates signed by firestop system


manufacturer certifying that materials furnished comply with requirements.

D. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each material to be used in


firestop system systems, including:
1. Product characteristics and Material Safety Data Sheets.
2. Listing numbers of systems in which each product is to be used.
3. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
4. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
5. Installation methods.

E. Installer's Qualification Documentation.

F. Verification Samples: For each finish product specified, two samples


representing actual product, color, and patterns.

10.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE


A. General: All through-penetration firestop systems shall be installed with
approved methods using materials that have been tested and classified to produce
an approved assembly.

B. Manufacturer Qualifications: All primary products specified in this section will


be supplied by a single manufacturer with a minimum of ten (10) years experience.

C. Installer Qualifications: Firm must be qualified by having experience, staff,


and training to install the specified products, and meets the following criteria:
1. Contractor is a 3M Master Contractor.

2. Contractor is a Certified 3M Trained contractor.
3. Contractor is acceptable to or licensed by manufacturer.
4. Contractor is acceptable to or licensed by authority having jurisdiction.
5. Contractor has completed the manufacturer's certified product
installation training.
6. Contractor must provide a list of completed projects as evidence of
experience; include project name and address, Owner's name and address,
and Architect's name and phone number.

D. Codes: Where manufacturer's application procedures are in conflict with


those of the code authority having jurisdiction, the more strict guidelines will prevail.

10.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING


A. Deliver and store products until ready for installation in manufacturer's original
unopened packaging, legibly marked with manufacturer's name and product
identification, date of manufacture, lot number, shelf life, listing agency's
classification marking, curing time, and mixing instructions if applicable.

B. Store and handle in such a manner as to prevent deterioration or damage due


to moisture, temperature changes, contaminants, and other causes; follow
manufacturer's instructions.

C. Store and dispose of hazardous materials, and materials contaminated by


hazardous materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having
jurisdiction.

10.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS


A. Coordinate construction and cutting of openings so that each particular
firestop system may be installed in accordance with its listing, including sizing,
sleeves, and penetrating items.

B. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation)


within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install
firestopping under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

C. Provide ventilation as required by firestopping manufacturer, including


mechanical ventilation if required.

10.9 WARRANTY
A. At project closeout, provide to Owner or Owners Representative an executed
copy of the manufacturer's standard limited warranty against manufacturing defect,
outlining its terms, conditions, and exclusions from coverage.

11.3 FIRE RATED DUCT WRAP INSULATION


A. 3M Fire Barrier Duct Wrap 615+: Lightweight¸ non-asbestos¸ high
temperature¸ bio-soluble¸ calcium-magnesium-silicate (CMS) non-woven blanket¸
encapsulated in a scrim-reinforced foil¸ blanket thickness of 1.5 inches (38mm) for
ventilation and grease duct applications.
1. Color: White blanket, aluminum foil encapsulated.

PART 12 EXECUTION
A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B. Conduct tests according to manufacturer's written recommendations to verify


that substrates are free of oil, grease, rolling compounds, incompatible primers,
loose mill scale, dirt and other foreign substances capable of impairing bond of
firestopping.

C. Verify that items penetrating fire rated assemblies are securely attached,
including sleeves, supports, hangers, and clips.

D. Verify that openings and adjacent areas are not obstructed by construction
that would interfere with installation of firestopping, including ducts, piping,
equipment, and other suspended construction.

E. Verify that environmental conditions are safe and suitable for installation of
firestopping.

F. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify


Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

12.2 PREPARATION
A. Prepare substrates in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and
recommendations.

B. Install masking and temporary coverings as required to prevent contamination


or defacement of adjacent surfaces due to firestopping installation.

12.3 INSTALLATION - GENERAL


A. Install in strict accordance with manufacturer's detailed installation
instructions and procedures.

B. Install so that openings are completely filled and material is securely adhered.

C. Where firestopping surface will be exposed to view, finish to a smooth,


uniform surface flush with adjacent surfaces.

D. After installation is complete, remove combustible forming materials and


accessories that are not part of the listed system.

E. Repair or replace defective installations to comply with requirements.

F. At each through penetration, attach identification labels on both sides in


location where label will be visible to anyone seeking to remove penetrating items or

firestopping.

G. Clean firestop materials off surfaces adjacent to openings as work


progresses, using methods and cleaning materials approved in writing by firestop
system manufacturer and which will not damage the surfaces being cleaned.

H. Notify authority having jurisdiction when firestopping installation is ready for


inspection; obtain advance approval of anticipated inspection dates and phasing, if
any, required to allow subsequent construction to proceed.

I. Do not cover firestopping with other construction until approval of authority


having jurisdiction has been received.

12.4 FIRE RATED DUCT WRAP INSULATION (1 AND 2 HR. ENCLOSURES)


A. Kitchen Exhaust Grease Ducts: Install fire resistive duct wrap insulation in
direct contact with ductwork to Manufacturer's instructions and referenced
standards, to applicable Omega Point Laboratories design numbers, including listed
penetration firestop system.
1. For kitchen exhaust grease ducts, regardless of fire rating, provide two
layers of 3M Fire Barrier Duct Wrap 615+ per layer with 3 inch (76mm)
overlaps.

B. Kitchen Exhaust Ductwork: Overlap perimeter and longitudinal joints 3 inches


(76mm) or 3 inches (76mm) on both layers. If required, tape seams using minimum
3 inch (76mm) wide aluminium foil adhesive tape.

C. Ventilation Air Ducts (1 and 2 hr. Enclosure): Install fire resistive duct wrap
insulation in direct contact with ductwork to Manufacturer's instructions and
referenced standards, including Listed penetration firestop system.
1. Apply fire resistive duct wrap insulation continuously to ductwork as
indicated on Drawings. For ventilation air ducts, provide one layer of 3M Fire
Barrier Duct Wrap 615+ with 3 inch (76mm) overlaps for 1 and 2 hour
applications. Observe requirements for additional duct wrap material required
at firestop, when required.

D. Ventilation Ductwork (1 and 2 hr. applications): overlap perimeter and


longitudinal joints 3 inches (76mm). If required, tape seams using minimum 3 inch
(76mm) wide aluminium foil adhesive tape.

E. Filament tape may be used as a temporary securing measure during


application of duct wrap. Finish installation using 1/2 inch (13mm) wide by 0.015
inch (0.4mm) steel banding on exterior layer of wrap. Spacing 10.5 inches (267mm)
on center and within 1.5 inches (39mm) of all overlapped seams. Consult individual
listings for approved banding type.

F. Duct Widths Greater than 24 Inches (610mm): Weld insulation pins to bottom
of horizontal ducts on a 12 inch (305mm) by 10.5 inch (267mm) maximum grid
spacing. Welded insulation pins to one of the wider sides of all vertical ducts on a
12 inch (305mm) by 10.5 inch (267mm) maximum grid spacing. Impale duct wrap
insulation over pins and secure with speed clips.

G. Duct Access Doors: Install duct wrap to Manufacturer's instructions and


procedures.

H. Firestopping At Fire Separations:
1. Firestop all wrapped ductwork penetrating fire rated concrete floors,
gypsum board, block and concrete wall assemblies and gypsum board
shaftwall assemblies using UL and/or Omega Point Laboratories firestop
system Listings appropriate for the applicable duct wrap system .
2. Kitchen exhaust grease ducts: Fire resistive duct wrap insulation to be
continuous through wall or floor penetrations. Minimum 0.5 inch (13mm),
maximum 4.5 inch (114mm) clearance permitted between outer layer of duct
wrap insulation and edge of opening. Fill annular space between edge of
opening and wrapped duct with pieces of 3M duct wrap insulation or mineral
wool insulation firmly packed into opening. Compress to percentage stated
and minimum depth stated in firestop listing. Recess packing material below
surface on both sides of walls or top side only for floors to depth stated in
firestop listing. Seal over packing material using 3M firestop sealant to depth
stated in firestop listing, flush with top side of floor and both sides of wall
surfaces.
3. Ventilation ducts: Fire resistive insulation may pass continuously
through fire rated wall or floor penetrations or may tightly butt to both sides of
fire rated separations. Minimum 1 inch (25mm), maximum 3 inch (76mm)
clearance permitted around unwrapped duct in opening or from edge of
opening to outer layer of duct wrap. Consult individual Listed firestop systems
for specific requirements.
a. Option A: Terminate wrap at fire separation. Fill space around
unwrapped duct where it passes through a fire rated wall or floor with
pieces of 3M duct wrap insulation or mineral wool insulation firmly
packed into opening. Compress to the percentage stated in the firestop
listing to full depth of floor or wall. Recess packing on both sides of
walls or top side of floor to depth stated in firestop listing. Seal over
packing material using 3M firestop sealant to depth stated in firestop
listing, flush with top side of floor and both sides of wall surfaces.
Tightly butt fire resistive duct wrap insulation to each side of wall or
floor assembly and seal interface with a continuous bead of 3M firestop
sealant.
b. Option B: Wrap continuous through fire separation. Fill space
around continuously wrapped duct where it passes through fire rated
wall or floor with pieces of 3M duct wrap insulation or mineral wool
insulation firmly packed into opening and compress to the percentage
stated in the firestop listing to a minimum depth of 4". Recess packing
material below surface on both sides of wall or top side of floor to depth
stated in firestop listing. Seal over packing material using 3M firestop
sealant to depth stated in firestop listing, flush with top side of floor and
both sides of wall surfaces.

I. Where kitchen exhaust hoods are located within a fire rated area or zone,
begin application of duct wrap insulation inside fire rated area 6 inches (152mm)
from face of fire rated wall or ceiling assembly for non-combustible fire separations,
and 18 inches (457mm) from face of wall or ceiling surface inside fire rated area for
combustible fire separations, or as indicated on the Drawings. Apply two layers of
duct wrap continuously to ductwork through fire separation for distance indicated on
the Drawings.

12.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL


A. Owner will engage an independent testing agency to inspect installed

firestopping and to prepare reports indicating whether the installed work complies
with the contract documents.

B. Notify testing agency at least 7 days prior to date when firestopping


installation will be ready for inspection; obtain advance approval of general schedule
and phasing, if any, required to allow subsequent construction to proceed.

12.6 CLEANING AND PROTECTION


A. Remove left over material and debris from Work area. Use necessary means
to protect film before, during, and after installation.

B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.

C. Install identification Labels for Through Penetration Systems: Pressure


sensitive self-adhesive vinyl labels, preprinted with the following information:
1. The words "Warning - Through Penetration Firestop System - Do not
Disturb. Notify Building Management of Any Damage."
2. Listing agency's system number or designation.
3. System manufacturer's name, address, and phone number.
4. Installer's name, address, and phone number.
5. General contractor's name, address, and phone number (if applicable).
6. Date of installation.

PART 15 EXECUTION
15.1 PREPARATION
A. Do not proceed with installation until substrates have been properly prepared
and deviations from manufacturer's recommended tolerances are corrected.
Commencement of installation constitutes acceptance of conditions.

B. Prepare substrates using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for


achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

C. If preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect in writing


of deviations from manufacturer's recommended installation tolerances and
conditions.

15.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions and
recommendations.

15.3 CLEANING AND PROTECTION


A. Protect installed products until completion of project.

B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
