1. Three (3) Things that I significantly learned from the readings

There are things that I significantly learned from the readings. The first is I’ve
learned that this Rizal bill experienced many conflicts that caused heated disputes around
the legislation. These conflicts are regarding religion which they also thought that this
will cause a problem with nationalism and people also questioned the compulsory nature
of this bill since they thought that Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo violates their
religious freedom. Through this, I’ve realize on how religion can portray a great role and
power on filing bills and such things, and how it can cause much of a conflict in these
situations. Second, I’ve learned that we students can be exempted from taking this subject
about Rizal and his works if we have reasons of religious beliefs. And lastly, I,ve learned
that people doesn’t have enough knowledge on this matter since they have
misunderstandings on Rizal’s works particularly, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
disregarding Rizal’s true aim for us to have better civic consciousness, national dignity,
personal pride, and patriotism as Filipinos and not discrediting anything.

2. Three (3) Things that are still unclear to me

After reading the material, there are still things that are unclear to me. First, the
removal of the bill’s compulsory since this might lead to students who will not show
obligatory to read Rizal’s works which can also make the bill less effective for students
to read what is needed even if it is included in the curricula. Second, the exemption of
students who have reasons to religious beliefs, it is not yet clear to me if they have
prerequisites if they will be exempted due to this matter and what are those, and is it
easier track for them than those who would study Rizal and his works. And lastly, it isn’t
clear to me on how and to what extent can religion affect situations, on how powerful it
can be to stop something from occuring even if it’s very important for us Filipinos. That
certain things including laws need to be revised to their favor if they cause issues for it.

3. I used to think that….

This Rizal Bill didn’t experience much of this conflict regarding religion, its
compulsory including nationalism. I never thought of Rizal’s writings to discredit
religion even I am a Catholic like them since I portrayed his works to grow our national
dignity, awareness, personal pride, patriotism and nationalism. I used to think that these
are Rizal’s aim that’s why he wrote his books and not for discrediting religious beliefs
which can cause problems between religion and nationalism. But eventually, these
conflicts have been solved through substitutions and has reached an end for it to be
approved. That through this approval, Rizal’s writing will educate and enlighten
generations of Filipinos. These are my thoughts of Rizal Bill and Rizal’s works.

4. Three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings

There are questions I want to ask since some things are not that clear to me. First,
what will happen or what will students do if they have exemption due to religious
beliefs? Second, after the bill was approved or filed, did Catholics still fight for their
belief and their thought for this bill even if it has an exemption for ones who have reasons
of religious beliefs? And lastly, has Rizal Bill been effective for our growth in things like
nationalism, national dignity and personal pride even though Senator Laurel has
disregarded the compulsion idea for this law?
