1. Three (3) Things that I significantly learned from the readings

There are things that I’ve significantly learned from the article. First, I’ve realized
that the system of land ownership originated from the Spaniards including my
misconception for the term “hacienda” in which I just learned from the article. I have also
learned that land was not unequally distributed before the Spaniards came to our country
and that the notion of private property was unknown then. Lastly, I’ve learned the
historical development of the estates which also lead to our developments today including
things like haciendas, land ownership and encomienda system, etc.

2. Three (3) Things that are still unclear to me

There are still things that remain unclear to me in the article. First, some terms are not
that clear to me including pueblos or municipios on what these units really are and the
class known as caciques and such class as mestizo, etc. Second is the harsh treatment of
Spaniards to us like is it necessary or not including the force labor to poor people, can’t
they lead or govern us without those things and what really made them to do this kind of
things to us. Lastly, is their ownership having this land including those resources, how
come they do not have complete control over their land and they are still under the so-
called friars?

3. I used to think that….

These haciendas existing today originated from us and that the term were just
taken from some language. I have learned from the article that it originally came from the
Spaniards and it made me think if we can call ourselves owners of these haciendas today
or is it still from the Spaniards. I also used to think that all farmers plant and harvest
crops while having ownership of those crops after harvested and they’re the one to sell it
which makes it their own income and nothing more but I’ve realized how hard it is since
they also need to pay rent for the owner of the haciendas which makes their income really
less and sometimes, they are given force labor which isn’t just.

4. Three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings

There are questions that I want to clarify since there are things that aren’t still
clear to me in the article. First, can it be considered that the Filipinos own these haciendas
everywhere, or are we really the owner of it or just tenants since it originated from
Spaniards? Second, how does the harsh treatments of Spaniards influenced us as Filipinos
living today? Do Filipinos that time have other choices besides doing force labor since
they don’t have something to pay for their rent?
