To ALL Taytay Community Medicine Clinical Clerks (Class 2020):

During your undergraduate years in the College of Medicine, you were introduced to the concept
of evidence based medicine (EBM) and critical appraisal of topic (CAT). Our department
specifically taught you how to appraise literature, employing different User’s Guides, in particular
the following:
• Harm
• Prognosis
• Therapy or Prevention
• Diagnosis

The same topic was also discussed and learned in other academic units, including the
Departments of Pharmacology, Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, and Obstetrics-
Gynecology.

I am including several scenarios with different clinical dilemmas, which I want you to
resolve by doing critical appraisal of literature. Divide yourselves into small groups of four-
five clinical clerks, based on your original three sub-grouping.

For example …
• Group 1: Clinical Scenario 8 (Therapy) and Clinical Scenario 5 (Diagnosis)
• Group 2: Clinical Scenario 2 (Therapy) and Clinical Scenario 9 (Diagnosis)
• Group 3: Clinical Scenario 3 (Therapy) and Clinical Scenario 10 (Diagnosis)

Perform an electronic search using MedLine via PubMed and retrieve a free full article which
you can use to resolve the clinical dilemma of your assigned scenario. Using screen shots, show
how you retrieved the free full text journal article, step-by-step.

Once you have retrieved the free full article, answer the appropriate User’s Guide (i.e., you can
refer to your old manual in Research Methods II or you can find online templates for the said
User’s Guide).

Submit your group’s critical appraisal by Friday, December 13, 2019 / 5:00 PM, online.
Please make sure everyone in the group understands how the CAT User’s Guide was duly
accomplished. Any clinical clerk may be called upon by the faculty, in a random fashion, to orally
report on the said CAT and EBM.

o Accomplished User’s Guide for Articles on Diagnosis and Therapy /
Prevention
Submit to the following (i.e., submit as a GROUP):
o Group 1: xtianne15@yahoo.com / cdcabanos@uerm.edu.ph
o Group 2: cgbetita@gmail.com / cgbetita@uerm.edu.ph
o Group 3: rmjavier@uerm.edu.ph / uermpreventivemedicine@gmail.com
o ALL Groups: uermpreventivemedicine@gmail.com / prevmed@uerm.edu.ph

All soft copies of the EBM files must be included in one flash drive (i.e., properly archived
into different folders for easier retrieval of submitted academic requirements), at the end of the
clinical rotation. All printed out journals and accomplished User’s Guides must also be
collated and submitted in an expandable short envelope on Saturday, December 14, 2019,
before 10:00 AM (after the Board Review Session). Please leave the expandable short envelope
together with the attendance logbook.

Failure to submit the accomplished critical appraisal forms on or before the prescribed
deadlines will incur corresponding infractions with concomittant sanctions, to be
served at the end of all clinical clerkship rotations in June 2020.

Please be guided accordingly.

Respectfully yours,

RAMON JASON M. JAVIER, MD, MSTM, FPAFP
