31. (a) A train in moving with speed 30 m/s the crossing, it blows the horn of frequency 400 Hz.
Distance of train from crossing is 400 m and speed of sound in air is 330 m/s. Find frequency
observed by the observer standing at 300 m from crossing on a road which crosses the railway line

(b) The wave length of light coming from milky way is greater than 0.4% the wavelength of same source
on earth.Find the velocity of milky way with w.r.t. earth.
32. A cubical block of wood of edge 3 cm floats in water. The lower surface of block just touches the
free end of vertical spring fixed at the bottom of the pot. Find the maximum weight that can be put on
the block without wetting (Density of wood = 800 kg/m3, spring constant K = 50 N /m and
g = 10 m/s2)
33. (a) A bat is flitting about in a cave, navigating via untrasound. Assume that the second emission
frequency of bat is 40 KHz. During one fast speed, directly towards a flat wall surface is moving at

(b) Earth quakes generats sound waves inside earth. Unlike a gas the earth can exprience both

that of P wave is 8 km/s. A seismograph records P & S waves from an earth quake the first P wave
arrives 4 minute before the first S wave. Assuming that the wave travels in straight line how far away
the earthquake occur ?
