SOUTHERN BICOL COLLEGES BRIEF HISTORY

Envisioned as a school of higher learning specializing in medical related courses


by its founder,civic leader and businessman turned educator,Manuel M. Bakunawa Jr.,the
Southern Bicol colleges was granted government permit to operate in May 1993. Its
building was thus rushing completion to open its doors to the pioneering students of
Nursing and Midwifery .The college was opened answer to demands of parent s who can
ill-afford college education for their children outside Masbate. The board of trustees
composed of civic and religious leaders recommended strongly the opening of such
institution.

Initially, the school offered two course:Bachelor of Science in nursing and two-
years certificate in midwifery when it formally opened during the school year 1993-
1994.The college started with 103 students,24 of whom,where nursing students and 79
were midwifery students. The followng year, a two years certificate in sanitary inspector
courses was offered.

Barely on its second year operation, however onAugust 12 of 1994 to be exact,


had the loss of its founder, Bakunawa Jr.seeing atleast dawn of his dream come true. His
demise temporarily stopped the construction of the 4th floor of the building.

Undaunted by her husband’s demise Madam Luz Cleta Reyes Bakunawa,the


Congresswoman of the 2nd district of Masbate, resolved to realize her Husbands lifetime
dream of providing Masbatenos with an institution of higher learning that is affordable,
credible,and relevant to the human resource needs to the province.

Mrs. Bakunawa the support of the members os the board of trustees pursued the
realization of the vision and mission of the school. Under her leadership, other courses
were offered which are all government recognize namely: AB Psychology, BEED Major in
Pre-schooleducation, Bachelor of science in secondary education, and civil engineering
and mechanical engineering course. It also opened the College of Law.

All facilities are provided for the enrichment of instruction.A building (with
barangay setting) for baranggay health services and another building simulating a mini
hospital and providing facilities and medical equipment therein were provided to
students for practical hands –on clinical experience.

Southern bicol colleges, an institution of higher manned by civic-
spirited individual, component and committed professionals imbued with
lover of God and fellowmen. Offering courses that would provide
professions relevant to the human resources need to the province of
masbate and the greater society, turning out globally competetive and
effective graduates who will be the partners of the government in the task
of building a just human and humane society.

MISSION
Lying on the providence of God Almighty, SBC commits and dedicates
to provide the province with quality, affordable education, and relevant
courses and quality graduates that shall met the human resources needs of
the province and elsewhere and thus contribute the development and
progress of masbate in particular and greater society in general.

To develop men and women as human with a sound professional
expertise in the science of engineering for the protection of the
environment and advancement of human dignity. To impart knowledge in
the atmosphere of academic freedom and research and to make individuals
strive for level of professional competence beyond their personal limitations
for global competitiveness .
