Cost of road construction is depending on the cost of Stone aggregates ( 20mm 40mm & 65mm in size ),

Sand, Muram / Quality Earth for filling and making the base of new road and the payment to Mining
department like Royalty / Seigniorage Charges in each State.

As an average Rs 10 lakh was the cost of construction of a four Lane High way for alength of One km (
without Service Roads on both sides )fifteen years back . But from 2005 this cost is increased to Rs 10 crore
for every one km for a highway of Four Lane & service roads on both sides.Break up of this amount for
an area of One Square Meter of Road is given below.

(1) Excavation and removing the natural soil of

Bad quality like Black Cotton Soil, Sandy Soil

and supply and filling of Muram & Consolidation

Including the removal of existing Old Road : Rs 720/= .

(2) Filling with M15grade concrete for a depth of 600mm : Rs 3200/=.

(2a) Compaction , Watering for 28 days : Rs 450/= .

(3) Cost of constructing Divider & Center Median : Rs 250/=

(3) Top layer of 100mm thick bitumin with 20mm stone : Rs 270/=

Total amount is Rs 4890/=

(4)Construction of Culvert, Bridges & Over Bridges,

Cost of removing Trees, Liaisoning charges ,

Making Road diversion during construction,

Construction of Parking bay,

Construction of Bus Stop Shelter and Inter connection of Existing

All Roads ,Construction of Drainage on both sides and Construction of

Fencing on both sides if it is an Express Way TO BE ADDED for Calculation of Cost of Construction of
Concrete Roads for National Highway / State Highway of International Standards.

Any way the cost of C.S.R activities and payment to party fund also to be added .

Express Way means Road protected with a Fencing Without any Traffic Signal as this road will not be
having any direct connection with any Other Road, other than Up & Down Ramp for Entry and Exit .

Chapter 2 : Construction cost of Village Road, District road and State High Way without Concrete but
with our old technology of W.B.M Road.

(a) Excavation and removing black cotton soil/ bad quality soil
and filling with Muram and consolidation.

(a2) Soling with stones of 230 mm size where ever Marshy Land, Paddy field crossing / crossing of water
logged area is there

(b) Supply and spreading of Two layers of 65mm size stone and compaction after spreading Muram.

(d) Top One layer of 40mm and One layer of 20mm thick with Bitumin .

Total Cost for One Square Meter of Road = Rs 1269/=

Chapter 3 : Construction of Road by Utilizing the Locally available Raw materials and adding the
Recycled Politheen and Plastic Waste materials construction cost of W.B.M roads are possible at Rs
789/= for One Square Meter .For This kind of All technology kindly visit the "Only one Gram
Panchayat in Our Country got I.S.O Certification. Public Representatives of other states and people
from abroad is in the Que for Visiting this place.

he cost of construction of road typically depends on lot of factors. Here are the of main factors that drive the
cost:

1.Type of Road : There are generally 2 types of pavements 1. Flexible pavement (Bituminous pavement) 2.
Rigid Pavement (Concrete road)

2. Width of the road or Number of Lanes: Usually a single lane road is 3.75 meter wide. The cost will depend
on the number of lanes that you plan to construct

3. Design of the road : The design of the road depends on the strata underneath the road and the traffic load
(usually calculated in Million Standard axles (MSA)). The type of strata is determined by CBR value of the soil
underneath.

This will give you the thickness of various layers like Subgrade, Subbase, Base Course, Asphalt Base, Binder &
Surface courses.

In a typical rigid pavement, the layers above asphalt course will be replaced by a concrete pavement.

4. Type of Layers used: Road base course can be achived by using WBM, which is a mixture of murram & 40
mm aggregate, & WMM (Wet Mix Macadam), which is prepared by adding aggregates of various sizes like
dust, 6mm, 12mm, 20mm & 40mm aggregate. WMM is typically designed mix and requires a proper mixing
plant to achieve the designed mix ratios. Similarly, you can use DBM (dense bituminous macadam) or
alternatively use premix carpet. So these layers are to be determined based on the bearing capacity of the
native soil/earth, before arriving at the cost.

5. Cost of Materials : The cost of materials like murram, aggregates, bitumen & emulsion and their availability
also determine the cost of the road. You need to collect these data before arriving at the total cost.

That being said, I can give you some tentative estimates for a KM of Road construction.

A 2 lane flexible pavement of 7 mtrs wide with the following typical cross section may cost cost around Rs.
1.2 Crores with cross section (excavation-500mm, subgrade-500mm, GSB-150mm, WMM-250mm,DBM-50mm
& SDBC-25mm)

A 4 lane flexible pavement with median and Kerb in centre with the following typical cross section may cost
cost around Rs. 2.5 Crores with cross section (excavation-500mm, subgrade-500mm, GSB-230mm, WMM-
250mm,DBM-50mm & SDBC-25mm)

Again these figures are tentative and will vary depending on location and above mentioned factors. You need
to analyse the cost based on your specific requirement, local availability of materials and type of road.
Here is a detailed costing sheet with Rate analysis of various materials. You can use this to create your own.

There are two sheets in this folder. One is the rate analysis for various materials like Subgrade (murram),
Granular subbase (GSB), Wet Mix Macadam (WMM), Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM), Prime Coat, Tack Coat
and Semi Dense Bituminous Macadam. The other has quantities and cost for various cross sections of roads.

I hope this helps.
