 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of The Study

Youtube is one of the most popular sites in the world for all age. Teachers

need to give them material through the media in which they are really interested.

Youtube can attract them in learning English so their speaking skill can be improved.

1.2. The Statement Problem

a. Can youtube video be used as learning media to improve the students’

speaking skill in learning English?

b. How do the teachers use youtube video as the media to improve students’

speaking skill?

1.3. Objectives

a. To know whether youtube video can be used effectively to improve the

students’ speaking skill.

b. To describe how youtube video can be used effectively to improve the

students’ speaking skill.

DISCUSSION

a. Speaking.

According to Hornby (1995:1140), speaking is to talk or say something about

something. He also stated that speaking is to know and be able to use language and to

make speech to an audience.

b. Language Features of Speaking

According to Harmer (2001:269), they are some language features of speaking

such as connected speeches, expressive devices, lexis and grammar, negotiation

language.

c. Teaching Speaking

The teacher can teach the speaking students by using some media. One of the

media is using audio visual. Lynch and Anderson (1998:18) say: Visual aids can

provide useful support to spoken presentation: in particular, they are effective means

of showing relationship, presenting statistical data or summarizing information.

The media should be related to the theme of accommodation for students in

their society (Lynch and Anderson 1992: 18). The use of the media has to be related

to the material. So, the students won’t be confused with the material.

A. Youtube Videos.

Prakoso (2009:v) says that youtube is available for everyone in community.

He also says Youtube has some profession account. They are comedian, directors,

teacher, musicians, nonprofit, politician, and reporter. Youtube has much in content. It

is always up to date.

B. Teaching Speaking Using Youtube Videos

 Internet nowdays is really easy accessible source especially youtube. With

only IDR 50K we can buy indosat SIM card to get unlimited youtube and 3 gigabytes

of regular internet quota. What the teachers need to do is just guide the students to use

their means as media to improve their speaking skill not only in the class, but also in

their leisure time. Whenever and wherever they want students can learn English. So,

we as their partner in their learning just need to give the example how to use the

youtube video to improve their speaking skill.

According to engVid, there are five steps to learn English from youtube.

1. Watch the whole thing non-stop.

2. Watch it again. This time, make notes on what you think is important or that

you have question about.

3. If still have question, go to the engVid site and put in comment section.

4. Take the quiz. If you get less than 70%, watch the video again.

CONCLUSION

Based on the discussion the writer says that youtube video can be used to

improve the students’ speaking skill effectively and students need to be guided shown

how to learn English from Youtube Video in order that they can start studying English

from what they like.
