1. Determine the scour velocity for both grit and organic particles during treatment of wastewater.
Then, evaluate the appropriate design of flow-through velocity for the basin. Given the following:
Specific gravity (SG) of the grit particle = 2.45, diameter of grit particle = 0.3 mm, SG of the
organic particle = 1.20, diameter of organic particle= 0.25 mm, friction (f) = 0.05, shape constant
(β) = 0.06, and shape factor (ɸ) = 0.85. Take dynamic viscosity (µ) = 0.89 X 10-3 kg/m.s and
density of water = 1000 kg/m3.
2. A rectangular grit chamber is designed to remove particle with a diameter of 0.55 mm and
specific gravity of 2.65. The critical settling and flow-through velocity are 0.06 m/s and 9.45 m/s
respectively. Determine the channel dimensions for a maximum wastewater flow of 20,000 m3/d.
The depth to width ratio is 3.
3. For an average flow of 4.5 MLD,
a) design a circular primary clarifier for 50% suspended solids removal at average flow. Assume a
side wall depth of 3.5 m
b) calculate the detention time
c) determine the SOR and suspended solids removal rate when Q = 7 MLD.
4. Based on the following figure, estimate the total removal rate for the suspended solids in a
clarifier with an SOR of 0.7 ft/min.
5. Design a continuous flow stirred tank activated sludge process given:

Influent flow, Q = 35 000 m3/d

Influent BOD, So = 400 mg/L BOD
Effluent BOD, S = 15 mg/L BOD
Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids, X = 3500 mg/L
Return sludge concentration, Xr = 8000 mg/L
Biomass yield efficiency, Y = 0.50 mg of cells formed/mg of substrate consumed
Microbial decay rate, kd = 0.06 /d
Sludge age, ϴc = 8 days

Specifically, determine:
i) the aeration tank volume,
ii) sludge wasting rate (m3/d)
iii) sludge wasting quantity (kg/d)
iv) oxygen requirement (kg/d)

6. You have been assigned to design a conventional activated sludge plant. The plant is to be
upgraded to meet an effluent standard of 35 mg/L of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and 45
mg/L of Suspended solid (SS). Assume the influent BOD is 60% of influent SS concentration. The
following data are applicable:

Design flow= 5 000 m3/d

Influent suspended solids= 350 mg/L
Aeration basin= 1 unit (20 m x 20 m x 5m)
Mixed liquor suspended solid = 2000 mg/L
Recirculation flow rate= 400 m3/d
Waste sludge flow rate = 6 000 m3/d
Suspended solid in waste sludge = 4200 mg/L
Effluent BOD = 25 mg/L
Effluent SS = 30 mg/L

Compute the following:

i) Aeration basin volume (m3) and detention time (hour)
ii) BOD Load (kg/m3/day)
iii) BOD and SS removal efficiency (%)
iv) Sludge wasting quantity (kg/day)
v) Sludge age (day)
7. A 1,500 mL sample of activated sludge with an MLSS concentration of 2,950 mg/L is allowed to
settle for thirty minutes. At the end of the settling time, the sludge volume is 1,240 mL.

a) What is the thirty-minute settled sludge volume?

b) What is the sludge volume index?

8. Calculate the a) hydraulic loading and b) organic loading of a trickling filter with a filter diameter
of 35 m and depth of 1.5 m. The influent flow and BOD are 2 MLD and 200 mg/L respectively and
the recirculation rate is 0.20.
