CHAPTER I
Introduction and its background
1.0 Introduction
School facilities are one of the basic educational requirements. School facilities are a collection

of buildings used to provide educational programs for students. These facilities provide students

with a place to learn. The students are able to do their works very well when there are enough

facilities in a school. The term school facility refers to the school’s physical environment like the

size, location, capacity, condition of the buildings and the availability of utilities, services and

equipment. Public or private schools have the right to have a well maintained facilities. School

facilities are all the things that are needed for effective learning.

Satisfaction is a feeling of happiness that obtain when a person fulfilled his or her needs and

desires. Students’ satisfaction as a short term attitude, resulting from an evaluation of a students’

educational experiences.student satisfaction in universities is greatly influenced by quality of

class room, quality of feedback, lecturer-student relationship, interaction with fellow students,

course content, available learning equipment, library facilities and learning materials. The main

objective of this study is to know the level of satisfaction of the student’s to the facilities of Our

Lady of Fatima University Tamaraw Building. The benefits of this study to the respondents, is to

have enough school facilities so that they are able to do things well. In the school, this study will

help the school to make changes for their facilities. Like adding equipment, expanding the

location, renovating some buildings, providing enough tables and chairs and many more. To the

future researchers, this would help them to be a better analyst and it can be a help as a future

reference for more studies in the future. The significance of this study is to know if there are

2
some students that are not satisfied with the facilities that the school have and to improve the

facilities for the better learning environment.

School facilities have been observed as a potent factor to quantitative education. The importance

to teaching and learning of the provision of adequate instructional facilities for education cannot

be over-emphazied. The dictum that “teaching is inseparable from learning but learning is not

separable from teaching” is that teachers do the teaching to make the students learn, but students

can learn without the teachers. According to Akande (1985),learning can occur through one’s

interaction with one’s environment. Environment here refers to facilities that are available to

facilitate students learning outcome.

School facilities gives a lot of changes in education .Its provides a comfortable , safe, secure, and

accessible services . Facility includes supplies , equipment , materials, maintenance , and

Information technology which can be used of the students . They fill the needs of students for the

better results of their study . Students are not only required to provide school facilities but also

provides good services and arrangement of the school or University .In this paper will show how

the students in Tamaraw buildings satisfied in using the school facilities . And what experience

they have on facilities . And how the facilities were fille the students needs.

It includes books, audio-visual, software and hardware of educational technology; so also, size of

classroom, sitting position and arrangement, availability of tables, chairs, chalkboards, shelves

on which instruments for practicals are arranged (Farrant, 1991 and Farombi, 1998). According

to Oni (1992), facilities constitute a strategic factor in organizational functioning. This is so

because they determine to a very large extent the smooth functioning of any social organization

or system including education. He further stated that their availability, adequacy and relevance

influence efficiency and high productivity. The facilities of olfu and Tam building are

3
outstanding because it plays a vital role in the learning process of each students. Facilities of the

school are one of the learning resources of every students to enhance their knowledge about the

subject matter. It is also important for the school to have a good facilities as well as learning

materials for the betterment of the teaching-learning process of the students as well as teachers

and other stakeholders. In this paper will show how the students in olfu and Tam building are

being satisfied on using the facilities of the school and how does it benefit to the needs of every

learner. Facilities must have learning materials, a continuous maintenance and must have an

information technology to cope with the rapid change in technology.

A. Historical Background

Our Lady Of Fatima University was founded in 1967 by Jose Olivares and his son-in-

law, Dr. Vicente M. Santos Sr., the university grew out of Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. The

hospital became the primary provider of medical and health care services for Valenzuela.

Olivares was an entrepreneur and previously a chemistry professor at Ateneo de Manila

University and the University of the Philippines. Santos rose from humble origins in Hagonoy,

Bulacan, graduated from the University of Santo Tomas, became an obstetrician-gynecologist,

and delivered over 96,000 babies during his 40 years of service. The college seeks to promote the

virtues of "Veritas et Misericordia" (Latin for truth and compassion). The founders set about

improving the facility from a general hospital to a teaching hospital for health care providers

such as nurses and midwives. This began in 1973 with the founding of Our Lady of Fatima

College of Nursing Dr. Santos and his wife Juliet Olivares-Santos continued the school's

expansion, including the 1979 establishment of Fatima College of Medicine with the pioneer

batch graduating in 1983. While Fatima still focuses mainly on medical and allied health studies,

4
in the 1990s the college diversified, starting programs in computer science, maritime education,

education, psychology, biology, tourism and business. The college became a university in

December 2002, with Dr. Vicente M. Santos Sr. as its founding president. Upon his death, his

wife, Dr. Juliet O. Santos, became the university's second president. By year 2008 up to present,

Dr. Caroline Marian S. Enriquez was appointed by the Board of Trustees as the third president of

the University. The next years further saw an increase in infrastructure development. New

buildings were established in the Valenzuela and Quezon City campuses, with additional nursing

virtual laboratories and simulators. This paved the way for Fatima's College of Nursing to be

designated by CHED as a Center of Development in late 2008. Fatima's expansion continued

with the establishment of additional campuses in Antipolo, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and Sta.

Rosa, Laguna. Owing to recognitions, it has received through voluntary accreditation of its

programs within the framework of the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines, the

university voluntary subjected itself to CHED's Institutional Quality Assurance through

Monitoring and Evaluation (IQuAME) in 2008. In 2009, after being evaluated, it was placed in

Category A(t) as a mature teaching university. In recognition of its accomplishments, the

Commission on Higher Education through CEB Resolution No. 076-2009 granted autonomous

status to the university for five years from March 11, 2009 to March 30, 2014.

CHAPTER 2
Review of Related Literature

2.1 FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Blagojevich, (2006) Facility appraisal should be one of the many roles

assumed by educational leaders. Maiden and Foreman (1998) claim that school administrators

should be “armed with a general understanding of the relationship between various physical

features of a facility and the learning climate.” It stands to reason that facility evaluation would

warrant equitable scrutiny and effort to that of ventures into pedagogy and curriculum.

Satisfaction is a feeling of happiness that obtain when a person fulfilled his or her needs and

desires. It is a state felt by a person who has experienced performance or an outcome that

fulfilled his or her expectation.

Many researchers have discussed the different factors that affect the student academic

performance in their research. There are two types of factors that affect the students‘ academic

performance. These are internal and external classroom factors and these factors strongly affect

the students‘ performance. Internal classroom factors includes students competence in English,

class schedules, class size, English text books, class test results, learning facilities, homework,

environment of the class, complexity of the course material, teachers role in the class, technology

used in the class and exams systems. External classroom factors include extracurricular

activities, family problems, work and financial, social and other problems. Research studies

shows that students‘ performance depends on many factors such as learning facilities, gender and

age differences, etc. that can affect student performance.(Hansen, Joe B., 2000).

12
As part of a teaching/research Fulbright award, a private, selective, comprehensive

university of 23,000 students commissioned a study of the satisfaction, needs, and learning

outcomes of students relative to student services and other outside-the-classroom activities. Such

a study had not been completed in the past and it was considered important to gather data and

receive recommendations from an external source to integrate this area of university

administration with the mission, long-range goals, and strategic planning of the university. The

subject institution serves the university system in the European Union and higher education

throughout the world through diversified study abroad and international student programs. The

university consists of faculties, schools, and institutes (academic units) facilitating the needs of

students pursuing a broad range of discipline-specific programs including medicine and health

sciences, engineering, law, economics/business, science and technology, arts and humanities.

The campus lies in an urban setting allowing students to take advantage of the educational,

social, and cultural amenities of a major metropolitan area of over one million people. The

campus infrastructure includes a mix of stately historic buildings and carefully integrated modern

architecture. Two university hospitals and a recreation/sports complex outside the city limits

complement the main campus.(Herdlein ; Zurner , 2015 et.al.).

2.2LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Miralao, (2004) The Philippines implemented a nationwide reform in its

education system in June 2012. The main change was an increase of the pre-university education

cycle from 10 to 12 years. This transformation demanded a significant investment in the

education system’s human resources and facilities, which prompted the legislators to increase the

education budget in 2014 to 4.3% of the country’s gross domestic product. It is well known that

13
basic school facilities in the country have been inadequate and insufficient, with various media

reports describing the dire situation at the start of every school year.

In this study, the authors investigated spatial variations in the effects of school amenities on

academic achievements of a cluster of provinces in the Philippines. Semiparametric

geographically weighted regression (SGWR) techniques were applied to public school facility

data to determine whether the effects of school facilities varied depending on school locations.

The analysis results presented significant spatial variations and differing effects of school sizes

and utilities on the academic achievements of top performing schools across the study area.

SGWR modelling revealed that schools in sparsely populated rural areas with basic facilities

have performed better than schools in urban areas with poor facilities, indicating that basic

facilities are important in far-flung schools. Since the effect on academic achievement varies

depending on the social and economic infrastructure, the provision of school facilities should be

based on the unique needs of each community. A decentralized approach is beneficial for the

management of school facilities in the Philippines where education resources are

limited.(Figueroa ; Lim; Lee , 2016 et.al.).

2.3 FOREIGN STUDY

According to Naumah ( 2017 )studies have shown that students’ satisfaction is an

important element that should be given much attention by educators in their policymaking.

Students’ satisfaction has impact on retention and financial capacity of institutions. With the

objective of assessing the factors affecting international students satisfaction, a descriptive

research was carried out at Veer Narmada South Gujarat University. The sample size comprising

29 international students and structured questionnaire was administered for data collection. The

14
results indicate that students have high satisfaction for library, contact with teachers, class size,

course content, reading materials and administrative services of the University. The results also

show that there is low satisfaction of students regarding majority of the university services. The

study recommends the need for university authorities to pay particular attention to the factors

that affect students’ satisfaction and tailor the university services to meet students’ needs and

increase their satisfaction.

Schneider, Mark (2003) There are environmental problems in Chicago and Washington

schools that the study found to be exacerbated by poor building design and maintenance, creating

situations for many teachers and students that jeopardized not only academic outcomes but also

health. Of the conditions most surely linked to health and academic achievementindoor air

quality, thermal comfort, lighting and noise, indoor air quality was of greatest concern. As shown

in Figure 3-B, over two-thirds of Washington teachers and more than one-half of Chicago

teachers reported fair or poor indoor air quality. Thermal comfort drew negative marks from

more than 30 percent of Chicago teachers and more than 40 percent of Washington teachers.

Poor lighting, dirty and inoperable windows, and dirty restrooms were other sources of teacher

dissatisfaction.

2.4 LOCAL STUDY

According to Mark Schneider, Ph.D. looked at how clean, quiet, safe, comfortable, and healthy
environments influence successful teaching and learning. He asks which facility attributes affect
academic outcomes the most and in that manner and degree.

It shows that the condition of school facilities has an important impact on student performance
and teacher effectiveness. In particular, research demonstrates that comfortable classroom
temperature and noise level are very important to efficient student performance.

15
Not because it is a public school, students don't have the right to have a well maintained school
facilities. Examples of these are lacking of classrooms, lacking of tables and chairs, poor
ventilation, poor comfort rooms and canteens. Usage of over dated books and the like. These
students want to study and even though they are only in a public school, it doesn't mean that they
don't have the right to study in a comfortable classrooms. And i hope that the government should
do something about this because these students have the right to have this well-maintained
school facilities and education is very important.
An effective school facility is responsive to the changing programs of educational delivery, and
at a minimum should provide a physical environment that is comfortable, safe, secure,
accessible, well illuminated, well ventilated, and aesthetically pleasing. The school facility
consists of not only the physical structure and the variety of building systems, such as
mechanical, plumbing, electrical and power, telecommunications, security, and fire suppression
systems. The facility also includes furnishings, materials and supplies, equipment and
information technology, as well as various aspects of the building grounds, namely, athletic
fields, playgrounds, areas for outdoor learning, and vehicular access and parking.

2.5 SYNTHESIS OF THE STUDY

The collection of literatures and studies raised are alike in the satisfaction of the students in the
school facilities that they have in their school or university . Satisfaction is a feeling of happiness
that obtain when a person fulfilled his or her needs and desires. It is accompaniment felt by a
person who has experienced achievement or an result that fulfilled his or her expectation .It will
provide knowledge that students' satisfaction is an important factor that should be given much
attention by educator in their policymaking .Students' satisfaction has huge contribution in
retention and financial accommodation of association .

The compilation of both foreign and local studies and literatures above gives an enlightenmemnt
to this study to understand it more. As stated Academic facilities are one of the most important
aspect in any student learning environment and experience. It is very important to have
recognition of what constitute academic facilities and their connection to the students'
satisfaction . They add an additional value to the higher education institution , comprehend it
with other academic association . Students' satisfaction in school or university is highly
influenced by quality of classroom , quality of feedback, lecture - student relationship ,

16
interaction with fellow students , available learning equipment , library facilities and learning
materials .

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 RESEARCH METHODS

According to AdiBhat quantitative research is the methods that deal with numbers and anything

that can be dealt with a measurable form, in a systematic way of investigating the phenomenon.

It is used to answer questions in terms of justifying relationships with measurable variables to

either explain, predict or control a phenomenon.

3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN

This study used the descriptive method of research in order to determine the level of satisfaction

of the Grade12 ABM Learners to the school facilities of Our Lady of Fatima University.

According to Calderon (2008), as citedby Alberto et al (2011), descriptive method is also known

as statistical research, itdescribes data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon

being studied. This research method is used for frequencies, averages and other statistical

calculations.Often the best approach prior to writing descriptive research is conducting a

surveyinvestigation. This method is used to gather information in order totest hypothesis or to

answer questions concerning the currents status of the subject of thestudy.

3.3 RESEARCH LOCALE

The respondents of the study will be the Abm learners ofOur Lady Of Fatima University
Valenzuela -Campus. The institution maintains a number of facilities to cater the needs of its
scholars and researchers. This includes hard sciences laboratories (biology, chemical and animal
experimentation) and soft science (informatics, interview, conference rooms) laboratories.

18
In the works is the Science and Technology Hub, that shall serve as a center of
innovation, discovery and learning for the OLFU community. The facility will feature top-tier
equipment and laboratories for scientific work and discoveries. OLFU Valenzuela -Campus will
give the researcher a high chance to obtain more information from the respondents.

3.4 POPULATION AND SAMPLING

The respondents of this study will come from Our Lady of Fatima University (Valenzuela
Campus). The Researcher will used Purposive Sampling under Non-Probability to select
randomly choosing from the different strata of the population. This is willingness of the
respondents to answer the guided question disregarding on their name, gender location.

3.5 RESEARCH ETHICS

The researchers will first make an guided question that will approve by the research
adviser. A letter of consent also to the school and to the respondent will be sent to allow the
researcher to conduct an survey. This data will be gathered and carefully analyzed by the
researcher only. This gathered data would be confidential to the researcher and to the
respondents.

3.6 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The questionnaire survey is a very well-known and widely-used research technique for quickly

and efficiently gathering and analyzing data from a population under study. A questionnaire is

the instrument for collecting the primary data (Cohen, 2013). Primary data by extension is data

that would not otherwise exist if it were not for the research process and is collected through

both questionnaires or interviews(O'Leary, 2014).According to Kothari (2004), use of

questionnaire is one of the most common datacollection tools employed in research works.

Questionnaires are used extensively togather data on current conditions, practices, opinions and

19
attitudes quickly and in aprecise way (Orodho, 2008). Questionnaires as argued by

Mugenda&Mugenda (2003)provide a relatively cheap way of obtaining information.

Furthermore, similar studiesemployed the same instrument for data collection (EzeAsogwa,

2013; Kalusopa, 2011;Kimama, 2008; Nengomasha, 2009; Wato, 2004). The questionnaires was

be structuredbased on the objectives of the study. The questionnaire contained both closed and

openended questions.

3.7 DATA COLLECTION

First, after validating the researcher instrument, the researchers will secure a written
permission to the administrator of the Our Lady of Fatima University. Second, when the permit
is given, the purpose of the study will be stated to the selected respondents for them to have an
idea for what the survey is for. Third, the researcher will make a guide questions for them to the
respondent .researchers will utilize a survey with the respondents to collect data that will be
check and carefully analyze.
The respondent will provide the information through questioner and to know their
personal perspective and point of views. Also, for the researchers to know some concerns,
recommendations and any suggestion on the respondents . As far as data collection tools were
concerned, the conduction of the research involved through survey as a guide for the researcher

3.8 DATA ANALYSIS

A percentage frequency distribution is a display of data that specifies the percentage of

observations that exist for each data point or grouping of data points. It is a particularly useful
method of expressing the relative frequency of survey responses and other data. Many times,
percentage frequency distributions are displayed as tables or as bar graphs or pie charts.
(Lavrakas,2008)

The researchers use the percentage frequency distribution to see the outcome of the
review based on the responses of the respondents. It is also used to get the general percentage of
the number of answers to a question.
