FLUID MECHANICS
(Civil Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Distingnish between (i) Gases and vapour (ii) Adhesion and cohesion.
(b) The velocity distribution in a fluid is given by u = 40000y (1 - 2y) where u is the velocity in m/s
at a distance of y meters normal to the boundary. If the dynamic viscosity of fluid is 1.8 × 10−4
poise, dieremine the shear stress at y = 0.2m [8+8]
2. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the resultant hydrostatic pressure force acting on the curved
face of a dam which has a shape prescribed by the relation y = yo (x/xo )2 . The apex coordinates are
xo = 4m and yo = 8m. The dam has a width of 2.5m and the fluid is water. [16]
3. (a) Classify the flows based on time and space criteria for the following cases:
i. A constant diameter pipe carrying constant discharge
ii. A uniform pipe bend carrying constant discharge
iii. A constant diameter pipe carrying varied discharge
iv. A converging pipe carrying constant discharge
v. A converging pipe carrying varied discharge
(b) Stream line, streak line and path line are identical in steady flows. Explain.
[10+6]
4. (a) Explain the various surface and body forces. Also write the relevant mathematical expressions.
(b) A pipe line carrying oil of specific gravity 0.87, changes in diameter from 200mm at a position A to
500mm at a position B which is 4m higher than A. If the pressures at A and B are 9.81N/cm2 and
5.886N/cm2 respectively, and the discharge is 150lit/s, determine the loss of head and direction
of flow. Also sketch the configuration. [6+10]
5. Find the ratio’s of displacement thickness to momentum thickness and momentum thickness to energy
thickness for the velocity distribution in the boundary layer given by u/U = 2 (y/δ)- (y/δ)2 .
Where u = Velocity in boundary layer at a distance y
U = Free-stream velocity
δ = Boundary layer thickness. [16]
6. Derive the equation to find velocity at a particular point from the centre of an inclined pipe through
which a laminar flow is there. [16]
7. Two pipes have a length l each. One of them has diameter D, and the other a diameter d. If the pipes
are arranged in parallel the loss of head when a total quantity of water Q flows through them is h, but,
if the pipes are arranged in series and the same quantity Q flows through them, the loss of head is H.
If d = D/2, find the ratio of H to h, neglecting secondary losses and assuming the pipe co-efficient f
has a constant value. [16]
8. A weir 36 metres long is divided into 12 equal bays by vertical posts, each 60 cm wide. Determine the
discharge over the weir if the head over the crest is 1.20 m and velocity of approach is 2 metres per
second. [16]
