Chapter 1
Introduction
This study talks about the effects of lack of sleep to the
performance of grade 10 students, but what is lack of
sleep? Lack of sleep also known as insufficient sleep, is the
condition of not having enough sleep. It can be either
chronic or acute and may vary widely in severity. It happens
when a person have not enough time to sleep one of the
causes of it is insomnia, some students suffers from
insomnia they having a hard time to sleep and some
students are doing their requirements in class even they
don’t have much time to sleep.
Lack of sleep affects the studies. Your brain will fog, making
it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. You'll start to
feel down, and may fall asleep during the day. ... If it
continues, lack of sleep can affect your overall health and
make you prone to serious medical conditions, such as
obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Background of Study
My classmate / schoolmate will feel sleepy when she / he
have a lack of sleep. She / he may don’t understand the
discussion in their classroom because of lack of sleep.
You considered the student have a lack of sleep when she /
he is sleepy and when she / he always yawn. When you
have a lack of sleep and then you’ll go to school, you maybe
don’t understand what your teacher is discussing.
When you have a lack of sleep you will be late in what your
teacher discussing and you’ll be late in lecture or lesson
because your mind is not focusing on what you are doing
because you have lack of sleep and you are sleepy.
Significance of study
This study is important to the students because if they have
lack of sleep, it may affect to their academic performance.
They needed a right time for them to work their mind
because if they have lack of sleep, their body system may
not function well. This study is important to the teacher
because she / he’s time will interrupt the lesson of the
student. Specially when the lesson is so important then the
exam will nearly if the student got lack of sleep they difficult
to understand the lesson. Maybe the student will failed the
exam if there have lack of sleep. This study is important to
the parents because they care for the health condition of
their child. The parents care about the lessons that they will
missed because their child have lack of sleep it may cause a
bad future to them because it may affect the knowledge of
their child.
Slope and Delimitation
The focus of this study is to find out if lack of sleep can
affect the performance of the student, specifically grade 10
students of Caybiga High School and to know the effects of
Lack of sleep to their performance in class.

This study only focus to grade 10 students of Caybiga High

School s.y. 2018-2019 not any other grade level or other
school.

Review of related literature
According to Alisa S Elliott, Jason D Huber, James P
O’Callaghan, Charles L Rosen, Diane Miller. Epidemiological
studies show a positive association between adequate sleep
and good health. Further, disrupted sleep may increase the
risk for CNS diseases, such as stroke and Alzheimer’s
disease. However, there has been limited progress in
determining how sleep is linked to brain health or how
sleep disruption may increase susceptibility to brain insult
and disease. Animal studies can aid in understanding these
links. In reviewing the animal literature related to the
effects of sleep disruption on the brain, we found most of
the work was directed toward investigating and
characterizing the role of various brain areas or structures in
initiating and regulating sleep. In contrast, limited effort has
been directed towards understanding how sleep disruption
alters the brain’s health or susceptibility to insult. We also
note many current studies have determined the changes in
the brain following compromised sleep by examining, for
example, the brain transcriptome or to a more limited
extent the proteome. However, these studies have utilized
almost exclusively total sleep deprivation (e.g., 24 out of 24
hours) paradigms or single short periods of limited acute
sleep deprivation (e.g., 3 out of 24 hours). While such
strategies are beneficial in understanding how sleep is
controlled, they may not have much translational value for
determining links between sleep and brain health or for
determining how sleep disruption may increase brain
susceptibility to insult. Surprisingly, few studies have
determined how the duration and recurrence of sleep
deprivation influence the effects seen after sleep
deprivation. Our aim in this review was to identify relevant
rodent studies from 1980 through 2012 and analyze those
that use varying durations of sleep deprivation or restriction
in their effort to evaluate the effects of sleep deprivation on
the brain transcriptome and to a more limited extent the
proteome. We examined how differences in the duration of
sleep deprivation affect gene and protein expression to
better understand the full consequences of repeated sleep
disruption on the brain. Future research needs to consider
and emphasize how the type and extent of the sleep
deprivation exposure impacts the conclusions reached
concerning the influence of sleep disruption on the brain.
Theoretical framework
The quality of sleep that one receives depends on two
factors, basal sleep and sleep debt. Basal sleep is the
amount of sleep a body needs on a regular basis for
optimum. Sleep debt is the accumulated sleep that is lost to
poor sleep behaviors, illness, environmental factors, or
other causes. Sleep debt results in lowered sleep quality
sleep (National Sleep Foundation, 2014). It should be
mentioned that sleep quality is just as important as sleep
quantity, but the two work concurrently. Although some
people may feel rested with a few hours of sleep per night,
studies show that reduced hours of sleep is associated with
low performance on complex mental tasks. For college
students performance on complex tasks is important due to
the critical thinking atmosphere encouraged by the
academic environment. Sleep deprived adults are not only
affecting their capacity for critical thinking, those who do
not meet sleep requirements also have a higher risk of
mortality (Morgenthaler, 2014).
According to, Jane F. Gaultney PhD (2010), sleep patterns or
disorders among students may vary depending on one’s age
and gender. It was reported that sleep disorders in adults
tend to increase with age, but they may also occur among
students. In terms of gender, she stated that females were
at greater risk for RLS/PLMD, insomnia, affective disorder,
nightmares, and more likely to be at risk for at least one
sleep disorder than males.
One study found that shortening sleep duration lead to
decreased memory encoding and knowledge retention,
suggesting that the hippocampus may be affected.
A study conducted with first-year college students found
that for every hour delay in sleep, the predicted GPA
decreased by 0.13 on a 4.0 scale. This study sought to
determine favorable and negative health related variables
and their relation to GPA. The study found that the
variables that had the highest correlation to poor GPA were
later weekday and weekend wake up time as well as later
weekday and weekend bedtimes. Another study compared
the sleep habits of the lowest and highest quintile of
performers base on their GPA. They did not find any
significant difference in total hours of sleep between the
two groups, but they did find that students with the highest
GPAs went to bed earlier and woke up earlier when
compared to students who performed less well
academically.

Chapter 3
Research design
The researchers will use the experimental. The
researchers do the survey by section and they will ask
students or the teacher on how many students in that
section was tardy in everyday Monday to Friday. The
researchers will compare to the students who's always
late and to the students who's not getting late.

The researchers chose this kind of research design

because the researchers wanted to know the number
of students who's late and the number of students
who's not late.
Sample population
The researchers will excuse selected students that
always have Lack of sleep and also selected students
who's have enough sleep. They will need also to know,
specially the students that always have Lack of sleep,
what might happen if they will always have Lack of
sleep.
Validation of instrument
The researchers will excuse selected students who
have Lack of sleeep in grade 10 level to explain their
reasons on why they are having Lack of sleep then the
researchers will help them if they can help those
students then the effects of students who have Lack of
sleep is probably lessen after this experiment.
Statistical treatment
Since the researchers chose the experimental, the
statistical treatment will also experimental. The
researchers will survey on those selected students
questioning them on what are the reasons of them to
sleep late at night.
