Write the principle of conversion of solar radiation into heat.

When solar radiation (energy) falls on solid bodies it increases the oscillation of atoms (absorption of the solar
radiation) and heat energy is being generated. This process is known as photo thermal conversion. The basic
principle behind it is the conversion of short-wave solar radiation into heat.
When radiation incidence on a material, a certain part of the radiation is absorbed. A body’s capacity to
absorb radiation is called absorbing capacity or absorption α. An ideal black body absorbs radiation at every
wavelength and therefore has an absorption coefficient equal to one.

4
Discuss one application of solar pond
The energy stored in solar pond is suitable for variety of applications such as space heating, industrial process
heat and electric power generation.
Electric Power generation:
Solar pond electrical power system is illustrated in Fig. 2.16. The hot water from the bottom of the pond is
pumped through a boiler, where it boils a low boiling point working fluid (organic fluid) in a Rankine power
cycle. Then the vapour enters a turbine and expands to produce mechanical power and them to electrical
power. The vapour from boiler now passes through a condenser where it is condensed to a liquid. This liquid is
pumped back to the boiler, and the cycle is repeated

Explain Isovents and Isodynes

Surface wind data on a national or regional basis is usually presented in the form of;
(1) Isovents: Contours of constant average wind velocity, in m/s. This data is presented in the form of wind
map in which the mean annual velocity zones are marked
(i) Isodynes: Contours of constant wind power, in watt/m2. This data is represented in the form of maps
showing the available yearly average wind power
Explain wind energy estimation
The wind velocity at any location varies continuously and the variation being irregular in terms of period and
amplitude. Therefore, the duration (scale of the periods) is an important consideration in the design. The data
based on scale of the hour (ie, mean speed over one hour interval) is useful for mechanical aspect of design. In
addition to the data on the hourly mean velocity, the other information required are:
(1) Spells of low wind speeds - for providing storage or alternates
(ii) Gusts for structural design - to provide safety measurements against damage

5
Energy Estimation:
Velocity-duration and power duration curves are useful for establishing the wind energy potential of a region
and the design wind speed.

The frequency duration curve Fig. 3.3 is useful in deciding the design wind speed for given site. The data is
also useful in estimating the actual energy output of the plant for a given type of wind mill.

List the merits and demerits of solar cooker

Merits
1. No attention is required during cooking
2. No pollution
3. Little maintenance cost
4. Food cooked is delicious with natural taste and also nutritive, because the vitamins are not destroyed.
Demerits
1. Food cannot be cooked in the night of during the cloudy days
2. Time required for cooking is comparatively high.
3. The items such as chapatis are not cooked since they require high temperature and also needs
manipulation during cooking
