MODULE 2: HEREDITY: INHERITANCE and VARIATION
HI THERE GRADE 10,
This module will help us cope up with missed lessons
due to many intervening factors.
I am hoping that being a Grade 10 student you are
responsible enough to finished your tasks and also work hard
for a self study. Believe me, with good study habit and self-
discipline plus proper time management: YOU WILL SOON
SUCCEED!
Good Luck and Thank you for complying!
Mam Romz
Directions: Answer the following questions:
1. The sequence of bases in one DNA strand is given below.
Identify the complementary sequence of bases in the other
strand of DNA.
2. Show how the DNA code translates into RNA code by placing
the sequence of bases of the DNA and RNA side by side.
RNA: ________________________________________
3. Each combination of three nitrogenous bases on the mRNA
molecule is a codon, a three letter code for a specific amino
acid. Use the genetic code table to identify the specific amino
acid for each mRNA codon.
Replication
In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick worked out that DNA
is double helix like a twisted staircase. The two sugar-phosphate
backbones make up the sides and the base pairs make up the rungs
or steps of the twisted staircase.
Deoxyribonucleic acid is copied during interphase prior to
mitosis and meiosis. It is important that new copies are exactly like the
original molecule.
The structure of the DNA provides a mechanism for making
accurate copies of the molecule. The process of making copies of
DNA is called replication.
When DNA replicates, two identical copies of DNA molecules

The central dogma of the transfer of genetic information is
outlined below.

Objective:
• Identify the amino acids coded for by the mRNA codon using the
Genetic Code Table.
Materials:
• Genetic Code Table
• activity sheets
Procedure:
1. Copy and fill in the table.
2. Refer to the Genetic Code Table to identify the amino acid.
Genetic Engineering
Understanding the gene has led to the remarkable
development of methods for changing a cell’s DNA. A modern
biotechnology called genetic engineering produces transgenic or GM
crops of organisms. Scientists have developed methods to move
genes from one species into another. When DNA from two different
species are joined together, it is called recombinant DNA.
This process uses restriction enzymes to cleave one
organism’s DNA into fragments and other enzymes to splice the DNA
fragment into a plasmid or viral DNA. Transgenic organisms are able

Now that you have learned that protein is made using the information
from DNA and how mutations may cause changes in the structure
and function of a protein, it would be worth finding out how a deeper
understanding of molecular genetics may affect your life. What do
you think are the significant contributions of this knowledge to
human society?
