LECTURE

A. What is GUIDANCE?

 (Lafever) It is that systematic, organized phase of the educational process which helps a
youth to grow in his power to give point and direction to his own life to the end that he
may gain richer personal experience while making his own unique contribution to his
society.
 (Benett) Guidance as a process of helping the individual to determine his physical,
social, intellectual and personality assets and liabilities as well as to know the conditions
and opportunities of the situation that confront him so he can make wise and intelligent
choices and adjustments.
 (Good) It is a process of dynamic interpersonal relationship designed to influence the
attitudes and behavior of a person.
 (Crow and Crow) It is an assistance made available by personally qualified, trained
men or women to an individual of any age to help him manage his own life activities, and
make his own decisions and carry his own burdens.
 (Jones) It is a personal help given by somebody to someone.
 (Gordon) It is an organization of information by the school about the child and his
community for the purpose of helping the child to make wise decisions concerning his
own future.
 (Aquino) Guidance tends to help the individual to become adjusted to his present
situation so as to provide the maximum development for him and help him plan for his
future in terms of his interest, aptitudes, capabilities and needs.

B. Why is there a need for Guidance?

1) Guidance is based on human needs – Everybody needs assistance at sometime in his life. An
individual needs sympathetic understanding and freedom from control of direction by others.
2) From the standpoint of the individual – Intelligent choices can result only where the
individual has adequate facts and experiences and receives careful counseling.
3) From the standpoint of society – The individual should be in occupation where he has been
trained so he can make society better and contribute to improving the conditions of his group.

C. What are the principles of Guidance?

1) Parents and teacher have guidance responsibilities.

2) Take time to solve problems and make decisions.
3) Let the counselee develop his own insights.
4) Problems arise from situations.
5) Guidance is a life-long process.
6) Guidance services should be extended to all, not simply to the maladjusted.
7) Guidance workers should rigorously observe a code of ethics.
8) Guidance places emphasis on the dignity, worth and individuality of the child as a means of
promoting the democratic way of life.
9) Guidance is concerned with the choices and decisions to be made by the students.
10) Guidance is primarily concerned with prevention rather than cure.
11) Guidance is concerned with the “whole” students not with the intellectual life alone.
12) Guidance is a continuous throughout the school life of each student.
D. What are that different Guidance Services?

1) Information Service
 All of the activities in the school involved in securing and making available to
pupils information about occupational and education opportunities and
requirements; and about activities, services in the school and community which
the pupil may use to solve his problems.
 Its function includes acquainting pupils with certain essential facts related to an
area of choice or adjustment.
2) Placement Service
Two types:
a) Educational Placement – process of assisting the individual to progress
satisfactorily from one education experience to another.
b) Vocational Placement - process of assisting the individual to find appropriate
place in the world of work.
3) Follow-up Service
 Maintains continuous contacts with graduates and drop-outs;
 Locate and offer assistance to unadjusted graduates;
 Keep the school in touch with current occupational opportunities,
requirements, and trends.
4) Individual Inventory Service
 It is designed to gather all reliable data, information and records to be compiled
for functional use.
 It may include items concerning pupils, including correspondence with parents,
samples of the pupils’ work, etc.
5) Research and Evaluation Service
 It is the systematic judgment of the effectiveness of guidance program.
 It provides periodical check-up of the program.
6) Counseling Service
 It is a means of helping people to learn how to solve their own problems.
 It should be extended to all pupils and to those who graduated or have left
school.
 The members of the staff should be trained to work with different groups of
learners.
