Blessing of the House
with the Holy Chalk
At masses of the Epiphany the traditional
blessing and distribution of chalk takes place.
Remembering the visit of the Kings to the Holy
Family, the chalk is used to bless our houses (and
homes, rooms, flats, schools, classrooms) for the
new year as if the Kings had visited us. At the
door we write:
✠C✠M✠B✠
2020
or, alternatively:
20 ✠ C ✠ M ✠ B ✠ 20
The ✠ denotes God’s blessing, CMB refer to the
kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, and 2020
is the year (or you can use the roman numerals
MMXX if you prefer).
Some interpret CMB to stand for
Christus Mansioni Benedicat!
May Christ bless this house!
When writing the blessing,
say the following words:
