Social Ethics In Society

The meaning of social ethics: Ethics is a rule that is applied in order to curb the
relationship with others so that good communication can be established and familiar. So
is social ethics rules adopted by a social order is the result of human creations are created
with the aim to maintain a good community relations and harmony.

Social ethics is applicable in a community and sometimes have a life of its own. Trait
(characteristics) that appears depends on the culture and customs applicable in areas
where a community or a community residence. Then the culture is still influenced more
by the mindset of the local community as well as the location and geographical
conditions in which communities live.

The importance of social ethics: As we know if in every community there are certain
prevailing social ethic. So every person who lives with members of the community must
be willing to obey all kinds of rules and regulations. The goal of course to establish a
harmonious life, especially with other community members.

Every action we take must be in accordance with the prevailing social ethic in the area.
This applies globally wherever we live. Whether it's in the western hemisphere, east,
south or north. Each has its own rules to maintain the good life in his neighborhood.

Examples of social ethics

Here are some examples of social ethics in the community from various regions.

- In the area of Java (especially Central Java), we have to bow when passing by or
walking in front of others, especially older ones. Social ethics is valid for the purpose as a
symbol of respect.

- When going into someone else's house, we had to knock on the door and greet or ask for
permission. The goal of course to respect the privacy and the existence of the host.

- A visit should not be at night. The goal of course so as not to disturb those who are
resting at night.

- Burping while eating. This is an example of ethics as opposed to Indonesian culture. In


Korea deaerah if any relatives or friends who invited us to eat together and then burp,
then this is a form of homage. Saltpeter in the country is a symbol of happiness, respect
and gratitude for having invited to eat together.

- But in regions of Europe when we do a burp in the time or after a meal is very impolite.
The reason is that it can interfere with mood and appetite because it eliminates the noise
generated can bring a sense of disgust.
- Another example of social ethics opposite is in Java. People who are getting advice or
warning from the parents should be lowered face. Because if the parents are considered
challenging stare and not respected.

- But in Europe, when there are people who speak have looked at his face, as a form of
attention at the talks that are underway.

Understanding Social Ethics and Practice

Understanding of social ethics is an order regulating the behavior of people associated


with the neighborhood association. This rule is related to the problems of modesty,
something that may or not to do, and what should be done by such person. Rules of social
ethics is normative, so it is not regulated in formal law.

And the corresponding sense of social ethics, then there is no measurable indicators that
could be a benchmark on it. In addition, issues of social ethics is different from one
region to the other. Because the parameters used on the meaning of social ethics is also
different.

As in Indonesia, said the word "you" in older people is an action that is less polite.
However, for people in the western world, it is a kelumrahan. Similarly, some other
social ethic, there are some differences in size in each region.

By understanding the sense of social ethics, one would easily fit into a new environment.
Therefore, the social ethic is a key to success in the association. And the base of it all is a
sense of mutual respect and understanding between one party and another party.

How to Implement Social Ethics

The problem of social ethics which parameters are different in each area, often causing a
problem. As the friction of the two cultures intersect, or the difficulty to adapt to local
culture that already exists. Some of the ways that we can understand the prevailing social
ethic in an area are:

- Be humble and do not need to highlight the advantages yourself. In this way, we will be
easily accepted in a new environment. So indirectly we can get an overview of the
prevailing sense of social ethics in the region.

- Studying the social ethics of a region through the existing literature. Whether through
books, media or information is also available on the internet. So we can prepare ourselves
and behavior when going into areas that have different concepts of social ethics.

- Ask local residents about local wisdom espoused (adopted/embraced). This is in


addition to media social relationships, can be used as media for learning about a new
culture.
- Joined with local community organizations. In Indonesia it is realized with the concept
patembayan, where people of Indonesia terkelompokkan (grouped) into a small
environment such as RT and RW.
