1. SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF SAMPLE MEANS

The average number of milligrams (mg) of cholesterol in a cup of a certain brand of ice cream is 550 mg,
and the standard deviation is 30 mg. Assume the variables is normally distributed.

a. If a cup of ice cream is selected, what is the probability that the cholesterol content will be more than 570 mg?

STEPS SOLUTION

1. Identify the given information.

2. Identify what is asked.

3. Identify the formula to be used.

4. Solve the problem.

5. State the final answer.

b. If a sample of 10 cups of ice cream is selected, what is the probability that the mean of the sample will be
larger than 570 mg?

STEPS SOLUTION

1. Identify the given information.

2. Identify what is asked.

3. Identify the formula to be used.

4. Solve the problem.

5. State the final answer.

2. POINT ESTIMATES OF POPULATION MEAN

Mr. Ramo conducted a survey among ten random samples of people who are in favor of truck ban in a
section of metropolitan area. He determined the percentages of those who are in favor of the ban. Assuming that
the only error present is the sampling error, he wanted to determine the point estimate of the population mean
percentage and the standard deviation based on 500 observations. The following numbers represent the
percentages of the ten surveys.

47.0 56.4 50.1 60.2 48.0 55.3 60.0 59.5 63.0 57.5

STEPS SOLUTION

1. Find the mean of the percentages.

2. Given the estimate of the population mean

percentage.

3. Find the sum of the values in the numerator

and n-1. Divide the sum by 9.

4. Extract the square root of s2.

5. Describe /interprete the result..

3. CONFIDENCE INTERVAL ESTIMATES FOR THE POPULATION MEAN

A researcher wants to estimate the number of hours that 5- year old children spend watching
television. A sample of 50 five- year old children was observed to have a mean viewing time of 3 hours.
The population is normally distributed with a population standard deviation 𝜶 = 0.5 hours, find:

a. The best point estimate of the mean.

STEPS SOLUTION
1. Describe the population parameter of interest.

2. Specify the confidence interval criteria.

a. Check the assumptions.

b. Determine the test statistics to be used to calculate

the interval.

c. State the level of confidence.

3. Collect and present sample evidence.
a. Collect the sample information.

b. Find the point estimate

b. The 95% confidence interval of the population mean.

STEPS SOLUTION
4. Determine confidence interval.
a. Determine the confidence coefficient.
b. Find the maximum error E.

c. Find the upper and lower confidence limit.

d. Describe the results.
