Dear Parents,

We are beginning our new unit on Place Value through the hundreds place. We will build on the
concepts we learned during our first place value unit! We will use what we have learned about
Place Value to mentally add, subtract, and skip-count in patterns up to 1,000!
Below you will find the Georgia Standards of Excellence for our upcoming unit. We have also
included important vocabulary and examples for each standard we are studying.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Math Standards:

1. Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of
hundreds,tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. (MGSE2.NBT.1 )
Understand the following as special case:
a. 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a “hundred.”
b. The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two,
three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones).

= 10 tens = 1 hundred = 100

=4 hundreds = 400

2. Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded
form. (MGSE2.NBT.3)

Example: 137
Base-10 numerals:  Number Name:  Expanded Form:

one hundred  100 + 30 + 7
thirty-seven

3. Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones
digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. (MGSE2.NBT.4)

Examples:

676 > 656  400 + 7 < 400 + 70

Three Hundred fifty = 350

4. Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. (MGSE2.NBT.2)

Examples of skip-counting patterns:

Counting by 5’s:  Counting by 10’s:  Counting by 100’s:

● 5, 10, 15, 20, 25  ● 10, 20, 30, 40, 50  ● 100, 200, 300, 400
● 75, 80, 85, 90, 95  ● 65, 75, 85, 95, 105  ● 540, 640, 740, 840
● 120, 125, 130, 135, 140  ● 240, 250, 260, 270  ● 225, 325, 425, 525

5. Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100–900, and mentally subtract 10 or 100 from
a given number 100–900. (MGSE2.NBT.8)

Examples: 56 + 10 = 66
  56 - 10 = 46
342 + 100 = 442
342 - 100 = 242
