Indigenous Peoples Month

By: Edgelin P. Caroro & Emerald B. Manliguez

To remember and acknowledge the

significance of the culture and beliefs of our
dear ancestors, Katipunan National High
School celebrates Indigenous Peoples Month
with the theme “Ugnayan ng DEPED at
Pamayanan Pagtibayin sa Pangalawang
Dekada ng Pagsulong ng Katutubong
Edukasyon.
The kick off activity was done last
October 1, 2018. It was actively participated
by the students and teachers of KNHS. The highlight of the activity was the acknowledgement of the
IP learners and their brief history. Then a Subanen song presentation was done by Ms. Charlyn
Manago and Mr. Jonjon Gumilid.
On October 12, 2018, the culmination program was held at Katipunan NHS ground. The
master of ceremony was Mr. Granie Ray Tracy B. Baldesanso, an ARPAN teacher. There were series
of student’s presentation in Junior and Senior High School. In JHS, the grade 7 students were assigned
to read Subanen story with its translation, grade 8 students had their Subanen song, grade 9 and 10
performed Subanen dance with story. Moreover, the Senior High School students were tasked to
present their handicrafts specifically baskets, bukag and farmer’s hat.
Our guest speaker was Adela E.
Icao, one of the IP leader in Sinacaban,
Misamis Occidental. She was 52 years
old and a residence of Katipunan,
Sinacaban. She shared the importance of
Subanen tribe, their culture and their
beliefs. She reminds the students not to
forget, instead be proud of being a
Subanen. Furthermore, she inspired the
students to study hard to be successful
someday.
In general, the activity was
indeed successful. The participation and the cooperation of the students and teachers headed by our
principal, Mrs. Juliet S. Lapiz was of great help. We believe that this activity will positively influence
us to love and embrace ourselves despite of our differences.
