Gas turbine performance curves
PW-6M performance curves (with the exception of exhaust temperature, double the values in
this chart to obtain PW-12M performance)
PW-7M performance curves (with the exception of exhaust temperature, double the values in
this chart to obtain PW-14M performance)
These performances curves are for the following conditions: output shaft speed 100%,
atmospheric pressure 760 mmHg, ambient temperature 40 °C, gas intake loss 100 mmAq,
exhaust pressure loss 150 mmAq, fuel lower calorific value 10300 kcal/kg.

Reading the performance curves

Example 1
To determine the maximum output, intake and exhaust flow, fuel flow and exhaust temperature
in the PW-7M when the ambient temperature is 40 °C, proceed as follows. The operational
status is given by the intersection of the 40 °C ambient temperature line and the output limit
line, labeled in the chart. Use this intersection point to read off the required values. The
maximum output is determined as 925 PS (from either chart). From the left-hand chart, the
intake flow and exhaust flow can be determined as approximately 188 and 550 m3/min
respectively. From the right-hand chart, the exhaust temperature can be determined as 625 °C
and the fuel flow as 250 kg/hr.
Example 2
To determine the intake and exhaust flow, fuel flow and exhaust temperature in the PW-7M
when it operates with ambient temperature of 15 °C and output of 925 PS, proceed as follows.
The operational status is given by the intersection of the 15 °C ambient temperature line and
the 925 PS line, labeled in the chart. Use this intersection point to read off the required
values. From the left-hand chart, the intake flow and exhaust flow can be determined as
approximately 183 and 540 m3/min. From the right-hand chart, the exhaust temperature can be
determined as 560 °C and the fuel flow as 247 kg/hr.

Gas Turbine (Twin Shaft) (by Yanmar Diesel Engine)
• Applications Driving pumps and emergency generators

Standard specifications
In a single shaft gas turbine, the output shaft, compressor and turbine are integrated, being
connected by a single shaft, and this means that as shown in the figure, at below the rated
speed the output falls, and at speeds below a certain value (around 50%), no output can be
obtained and the equipment can not be started up unless there is no load. Therefore in order to
drive a pump, such a turbine requires a clutch or a fluid coupling.
By contrast, in a twin-shaft gas turbine (also called a free power turbine), the output turbine is
separate from the gas generating equipment (comprising compressor and compressor drive
turbine), so that the rotation of the output shaft is unrelated to that of the gas generator. The
volume of gas generated is varied by increasing or decreasing the quantity of fuel supplied,
and when the output turbine inlet temperature is kept constant, the output shaft exhibits torque
characteristics similar to those of a torque converter, yielding high torque at low speeds as
shown in the figure.
To start the turbine running it is only necessary to start the gas generator. And since the output
shaft provides high torque during starting and at low speeds, there is no need for any clutch or
fluid coupling between the output shaft and the pump.
