Shop Practice no. 6
Off Hand Method

Ball Peen Hammer Head

OBJECTIVES:
1. To be able to make a ball peen hammer head.
2. To be able to practice forming process in a lathe machine.

METHODS and ANALYSIS:

Forming is the machining of irregular and curved surfaces in a workpiece turned in a
lathe. This is accomplished with an off-hand method or with formed tools.

MATERIALS:
One (1) piece round metal bar (to be machined in the lathe machine)

TOOLS TO BE USED:
Lathe machine and its accessories – to cut and shape metals by revolving it on a cutting tool
Hack saw – for manual cutting of metals
Set of turning tools – for cutting in lathe machine

PROCEDURE:
1. Mount the workpiece in the lathe machine.
2. Perform the straight turning cut on the workpiece.
3. Mark the workpiece to the preferred size of the ball peen hammer head.
4. Perform the off-hand forming on the parting division.
5. Set the automatic for a slow feed so that the carriage will move slowly to the right.
6. With the tool set to a depth that will produce the required large diameter, set it to automatic
feed. The tool is gradually fed with the cross feed while the carriage moving from right to
left.
7. Make the curved part by following the indicated arrows that shows the direction of travel.
8. Finish the ball peen hammer head.
9. Bore the 5/16 inch diameter on the center of the ball peen head.
10. Join the handle and the head by rivetting.
QUESTIONS:

1. What is forming process?

- The forming process is the machining of and irregular and curved surface of a
workpiece placed in a lathe machine.

2. What kinds of tools are needed in the forming process?

- A form tool is precision-ground into a pattern that resembles the part to be formed. The
form tool can be used as a single operation and therefore eliminate many other
operations from the slides (front, rear and/or vertical) and the turret, such as box tools

3. What is a straight forming tool?

- The straight forming tool is a straight forming tool is a tool that can be both used for
left or right cut.

4. What should be done to lessen the chattering noise produced by forming tools?

- First, to lessen the chattering noise produced by forming tools the turrets must be used
to support the work.

5. What kind of materials can be used in forming tools?

- The kinds of materials that can be used in forming tools are High speed steels, carbide,
and ceramics.

6. What part of the ball peen hammer is needed for riveting?

- The part of the ball peen hammer that needs riveting is the top most part of the handle
which is to be connected to the head.

7. What type of spindle speed should be used in forming tools?

- The spindle speed must be set at high speed in order to obtain a fine result.

8. For finishing the works, what tools are needed?

A folder is needed to finish the job, as it will be used to smooth the workpiece and goods
to remove sharp edges.

9. What is needed for cooling while cutting with a forming tool?

The oil should always be used while cooling when slicing with the shaping tool because it
avoids too much rubbing that can cause the tool to be harmed.
10. In what kind of production machine are forming tools best suited for?
- Forming tools are best suited for lathe machines production.

DISCUSSION
A ball peen hammer (also known as an engineer or a machine hammer) is a tool that is
commonly used in manual metalworking. The name derives from the globular shape of one of its
head ends and its purpose: the painting of metal surfaces (i.e. the enhancement of the mechanical
properties of metal by manual or automatic blowing). Based on the product, the hammers can be
either hard-faced or soft-faced.
Hard-faced hammer heads are made of high-carbon steel and alloy steel forged and heat-
treated. Such hammers are particularly strong and should be used on hard metal surfaces. Soft-
faced hammers are made of lead, copper, rubber and even hard-wound rawhide. Their heads and
faces should be replaced on a regular basis because they are prone to deformation, wear and tear.
Such hammers are to be used on more porous surfaces.
A ball peen hammer can be used for a number of operations, but its main functions are as
follows: extension and shaping of the free end of copper roves, soft rivets and the like, for the
purpose of setting the joint tightness in place. This is achieved with the hammer ball part. Striking
punches-Punches are mechanical matrixes used to mark wood and metal surfaces for the
positioning of holes.
Strikes are made with the hammer side opposite the spherical end; normally this side is fairly flat.
Driving a drift pin or creating a gasket. Blade sharpening-Metal blades for various cutting
instruments (knives, scythes, etc.) can be precisely sharpened with a hard-faced ball peen hammer.
Forming and tuning of steel drums (also known as metal pans).

CONCLUSION
I also believe that Shop Exercise No.6, which is all about making a' Ball Peen Hammer,'
needs a lot of commitment and teamwork within the team, because it will be difficult to carry out
a task other people are lazy. The team must plan the work to be done by each participant and ensure
that the task is carried out correctly and is completed on time. We always follow the directions and
use time wisely, because we know it's for our own protection. Organized group effort should lead
to a better performance and the proper execution of the work to be done.

New tools have been added in the campaign, such as the hack saw and the collection of
turning tools. Our group is already familiar with the other method to be used, which is why it is
simple for us to use it to do the task. The materials have been well used by our team and they
follow the correct dimensions in each area of the ball peen hammer. The final work we also
performed is great and almost the same with the sample design. We may also exercise the process
in a lathe tool. It means that the goals of the plan have been met and we have accomplished it on
schedule and performance.
RECOMMENDATION
My recommendations for the better execution of the metal working is the additional tools
in every group because some tools needs to be use in some part of the project which means that
some members needs to wait for that person to finish. For me it will consume a lot of time and
can also make students do things that are irrelevant or might play with the tools which can cause
injuries or accident. Another recommendation that I want to make is the use of laboratory
goggles and mask. This is for the safety of the students from the metal filings which is bad to the
health of the students. Lastly I want to recommend a checking of the tools that are not
functioning well because it might cause accidents.
