CONTENT STANDARD: The learner understands the principles and uses of a


position paper
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: presents a convincing position paper based on
properly cited factual evidence

I. Lesson Objectives:
Towards the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 define what a position paper is;
 analyze the arguments used by the writer/s;
 write various kinds of position papers.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Writing a Position Paper
Subtopic: Formal and Informal Position Paper
Reference: English for Academic and Professional Purposes
Materials: Powerpoint Presentation, Visual Aids and Article Copies
Equipment: Laptop, TV as secondary monitor, and extension wires

III. Lesson Procedure:


A. Preliminaries
1.Prayer
2. Greeting
3. Attendance

B. Motivation
The teacher will ask the following questions to the learners:
1. What is persuasion? Who uses it?
2. Is the art of persuasion an important skill? Why or why not?
3. Would you like to be able to persuade people? Why or why not?

C. Activity
 The teacher will group the students into 6 groups.
 The teacher will provide one sample of each: (1) print advertisement, (2)
radio advertisement (3) a television commercial

D. Analysis
 The learner will discuss their findings as a group.
 Each group will discuss why they think each advertisement is
persuasive and effective.
Questions:
1. What does the advertisement no.1 trying to say?
2. What is the logical construction of the argument for advertisement no. 1?
3. What does advertisement no. 1 presented as proof to show that the claim
is true?
4. What makes advertisement no. 1 effective?

E. Abstraction
 We can see in the advertisements that they are trying to convince
people to believe in them or buy their products.
 We can learn in sample advertisements that persuasion is important.
The teacher will give a short discussion about the “The Importance of Being
Persuasive” by Marikit Tara Alto Uychoco

IV. Application
 In a small group, the teacher will tackle the following issues and the positions
that he believes are being discussed regarding the issues.
 The teacher will give positions that are for and against each issue.
 The learners will discuss with their group what they feel about these issues
and what are their positions regarding each one.
Issues:
1. Spanking Children as a Form of Discipline
2. Implementation of the Reproductive Health Law
3. Sex Education in the School
 The learners will share their positions and beliefs regarding the issue as a
group.

V. Evaluation
Using ½ sheet of paper, the students will give their positions whether they are for or
against on the specific issue in order to persuade readers.

Instruction: Choose whether you are for or against. Persuade your readers to believe
in your position on the specific issue.

VI. Assignment
In your notebook, write your personal reaction to the activity. Feel free to use quotes
from your classmates or teacher. Reflect on how these views have changed your
perspective.
