CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This section contains the articles, research studies, or dissertation. This part

would support the given study with facts and quotations of the articles that would be

discussed. Review of related literature is important because this would give the study a

strong foundation using facts that is collected through different sources.

Foreign Literature

Marking the 50th anniversary of Kim ll Sung’s instruction on national land

development was held and trees-planting events were held on revolutionary memorial

sites throughout the country. North Korea’s forests have increasingly been devastated

as the result of cutting timber for industrial use, reckless deforestation for firewood and

charcoal, reclamation of land for agricultural uses, etc.,.To reduce the use of trees for

production, North Korea has perfected a process of producing paper by using Osari

(corn husk) that is actively utilizing for production of notebook, wall paper, and floor

paper, etc. Although the quality of the paper is poor, it seems to have been developed

to cover the impairing production of pulp from wood as a result of shortage of forestry

resources and energy. (Korea North : Energy Policy, Laws and Regulations Handbook

Vol. 1)

Local Literature

In the year 2010-2011 there were students who used the feelings of saba

(compressa) and corn (zea mays) as components in making a handmade paper . since

there are a lot of tress being cut down . the students tried to find a way to lessen the
cutting trees. The researchers believe the saba and corn peelings can be used in

making paper.their main goal is to create a good quality of paper through the peelings of

saba and corn . their products is just like an ordinary paper. Only that , it would suit a

scrapbook paper better.(Duran , Mae )

An investigatory project that deals with the recycling of corn husks , which were

used as the main component in producing good quality of paper. Their study deals with

the recycling of corn husk , which were used in producing a good quality of paper. They

boil the corn husk and in caustic soda to soften it. After they boil the corn husk they

drain the corn husk from the water. Bleaching and pounding were also done to fine the

fibers , after that , they put it in a molder and let it dry under the sun. It takes 24 hours in

drying the paper. (Mohammad Hasim, Jai Marie C.)

Synthesis of Related Literature

Corn Husks are either treated as waste or burnt as fuel causing environmental

concern. In order to achieve its value addition in new research areas, corn cob can be

processed chemically to find ways to generate new end products with added values at

very low price.

North Korea has been facing a huge problem with deforestation concluding a

substitute would be helpful to conserve the environment and that is where the idea of

turning corn husk into paper in order to reduce the usage of trees.

In an Investigatory Project by Mae Duran aiming to find a substitute for trees in

making paper, one of its objectives is to lessen the cutting of trees caused by

manufacturing paper; therefore, it is decided that this study will contain the possible

components which could be used in creating paper. Corn Husk didn’t stop alone for just

being a paper but made its way to becoming an art paper that adds aesthetic. A little bit

of creativity and a whole lot of science.
