A man is trapped in a room. The room has only

two possible exits: two doors. Through the first
door there is a room constructed from magnifying
glass. The blazing hot sun instantly fries anything
or anyone that enters. Through the second door
there is a fire-breathing dragon. How does the
man escape?

2 Types of Thinking

Creative - described as making and communicating connections to: think of

many possibilities; think and experience in various ways and use different
points of view; think of new and unusual possibilities; and guide in generating
and selecting alternatives.

Critical - analyzing and developing possibilities to: compare and contrast many
ideas; improve and refine ideas; make effective decisions and judgments; and
provide a sound foundation for effective action.

Critical Thinking (Vertical) vs. Creative Thinking (Lateral)

Vertical thinking
• very linear,
• selective pathways.
• Each step is precise, necessary, and must be correct.

Lateral thinking
• can involve wrong answers,
• path divergence, and
• jumping from one step to another at random.

BY:
Critical Thinking (Vertical)

Vertical thinking – Logical Reasoning

The Basis of Scientific Thinking. The basis in which Modern Mathematics is predicated.

Very methodical.

It is Binary in Nature. Everything is either a Yes or a No.

Logical Reasoning - Activity

Activity –

1.Break up into teams of 2

2.One of you will be given a card with a picture
3.The other will have to guess what is on the card by asking
questions.
4.The person holding the card can only answers “Yes” or “No”.
5.The person that can guess the item on the card with the least
amount of questions wins.
Deductive Reasoning

Deductive reasoning, Synthesis, Deduction, Deduce

Reasoning from the general to the particular (or from cause to effect), or
"top-down" logic

An example of a deductive argument:

1.All men are mortal.
2.Aristotle is a man.
3.Therefore, Aristotle is mortal.
Inductive Reasoning

“Bottom-up" logic, is a kind of reasoning that constructs or evaluates general

propositions that are derived from specific examples

An example of inductive reasoning:

1.90% of humans are right-handed.
2.Joe is a human.
3.Therefore, the probability that Joe is right-handed is 90% (therefore, if we
are required to guess we will choose "right-handed" in the absence of any other
evidence).
Problem with Logic – A Paradox

A paradox is a statement that apparently contradicts itself and yet might be

true. Most logical paradoxes are known to be invalid arguments but are still
valuable in promoting critical thinking
Creative Thinking

Creative thinking
• A way of looking at problems or situations
from a fresh perspective that suggests solutions (which may look unsettling at
first).

Creative thinking
• can be stimulated both by an
• unstructured process such as brainstorming, and
• by a structured process such as lateral thinking.

A man lives on the twelfth floor of an apartment

building. Every morning he takes the elevator
down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the
evening, he gets into the elevator, and, if there is
someone else in the elevator — or if it was raining
that day — he goes back to his floor directly.
Otherwise, he goes to the tenth floor and walks up
two flights of stairs to his apartment. Why does he
do that?

BY:
Answer

Because he’s too

short n can’t reach
the button for 12th
floor by himself. If
raining – then he
uses the umbrella I
guess to reach up…
