Jamnitzer’s work 57
The study of polyhedra was a recurring element in
geometry from Renaissance to the last days of the
Baroque period, something that can be observed
in the numerous treatises and essays. Some
outstanding authors were Walther Rivius, Hans
Lencker, Lorenz Stöer, Paul Pfinzing, and others
around the city of Nuremberg 2. However, it was
the artist Wentzel Jamnitzer (1508-1585) the one
who developed this specific field to the core, and
he reflected it in his work Perspectiva corporium
regularium, published in Nuremberg in 1568.
Jamnitzer’s Perspectiva is divided into two
different parts, each crowned by two frontispieces
representing Arithmetic, Geometry, Perspective,
and Architecture 3, plus a brief introduction.
The focal point in the first part is the study of the
polyhedra which are directly derived from regular
polyhedra, in which the five platonic solids go
through a significant process of decomposition,
resulting in twenty-three variations of each of
them, and obtaining some of the Archimedean 4
solids. The second part of the study is devoted
to the free creativity of fantasy forms, some
of the pieces arousing from combination of
former works; some other creating a geometric
landscapes or still lifes 5. Nevertheless,
Jamnitzer never provided with a geometric
procedure explaining his graphic constructions,
so the keen reader could not continue or extend
his study. Both parts of this work were the object
of study and reinterpretation of the anonymous
