Title:

Insect Repellant Potential of Juniper Berry (Di’ zad’ – Navajo

name) Essential Oil

Chapter I -Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Juniperus Communis (Juniper Berry) has many significant

medical value in the Native American Culture. One of the
popular uses of Juniper Berries aside from is detoxifying
action is its potential to repel insects. It can also
use traditionally to treat all manner of complaints ranging from
kidney infections, urinary tract infections and digestive issues
to gout, warts and skin growths. Their antiseptic properties
were well known and Juniper tea was once used as a disinfectant
for surgeons' tools. Juniperus Berry Essential Oil works as
a repellent that keeps mosquitos, bugs, fleas, ticks, and flies
at bay. Apply diluted Juniper Berry Essential Oil on the skin or
make a spray to protect your family from these insects' bites.
It is also used for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and kidney
and bladder stones. Other uses include treating snakebite,
diabetes, and cancer. Some people apply juniper directly to the
skin for wounds and for pain in joints and muscles.
The essential oil of juniper is inhaled to treat bronchitis and
numb pain.
Statement of the problem

The

Purpose

The development of insect repellant from its essential

oil obtained through steam distillation.

Significance of the study

This study is undertaken to find out if the Juniper Berry

essential oil is effective to be an insect repellant.
Chapter II – Background

Juniper berry

A juniper berry is the female seed cone produced by the various

species of junipers. It is not a true berry but a cone with
unusually fleshy and merged scales, which give it a berry-like
appearance. The cones from a handful of species, especially
Juniperus communis, are used as a spice, particularly in
European cuisine, and also give gin its distinctive flavor.
According to one FAO document, juniper berries are the only
spice derived from conifers, although tar and inner bark from
pine trees is sometimes considered a spice as well.
Juniper Essential Oil

Juniper Essential Oil is a powerful cleanser and detoxifier and

cleanser of the auric field. It is steam distilled from the
aerial parts including the juniper berries and twigs. There are
over 50 species of Juniper grown throughout the world so it can
be a bit confusing when choosing a juniper oil to work with!
Reaction Paper

“Insect Repellant Potential of Juniper Berry (Di’ zad’ – Navajo

name) Essential Oil”, conducted by Oletha Hope Ghould the focus
of this study is on the development of the insect repellant from
its essential oil.

From my understanding, the essential oil from Juniper berry has

a totally big benefit. Here are some benefits of juniper berry
essential oil:

1. Lymphatic drainage

The lymphatic system is responsible for removing toxins from the

body, but sometimes this process can get blocked along the way.

According to Dr Couic Marinier, “Juniper Berry Essential Oil

facilitates lymphatic drainage to fight against impurities”.

2. Improve digestion

Juniper Berry Oil can boost the production of digestive enzymes

to improve the breakdown and absorption of proteins, fats and
nutrients from foods.

3. Promote relaxation

Considered in folklore as a natural anxiety remedy, Juniper

Berry Essential Oil is renowned for its positive effects on
relaxation responses in the brain.
Dr. Couic Marinier adds, “Juniper Berry Oil is also a non-
negotiable treatment for muscular pain, as it relaxes these
areas”.

4. Natural antiseptic

Juniper Berry Oil has antimicrobial properties, which provide

strong and effective treatments to help kill bacteria and
prevent infection.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil has even been shown to be effective

against some bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.

5. Powerful antioxidant

Along with Clove Oil, Juniper Berry Essential Oil is packed full
of antioxidants. These compounds can help to defend and heal the
body, whether it’s the skin or internal functions.

After the testing and comparing result, the commercial insect

repellant significantly showed that it is a better insect
repellant compared to the J. communis diluted essential oil.
