PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING OF SUPLPHURIC ACID

SPILLAGE / LEAKAGE

1.0 Purpose and Scope:

1.1System Description
This explains the safe and sequential procedure for handling of spillage of Sulphuric Acid.

1.2Responsibility of Staff:
Shift charge engineer / control room engineer & field engineer.

2.1 SAFETY:

While handling the spillage of Sulphuric Acid, operator should wear Acid resistant suit, face mask and
gum boots.

2.2 PRECAUTIONS:

1. Ensure that there is availability of service water to wash away the spill (if any) on protective wear.

2. Use the safety showers / eye wash fountain immediately in case of any contact with sulphuric acid.

3. Water should not be directed on the point of sulphuric acid leakage.

2.3 SPILL EQUIPMENT:

Sulphuric acid storage tanks have all inter connection pipe line from one tank to another tank through
pumps and also gravity flow level equalization valves.

2.4 POINT OF LEAKAGE / SPILLAGE:

2.4.1 From connecting pipe line:

1. Close all the valves in down stream and up stream from the point of spillage.

2. Loosen the nut and bolts to drain the content in that particular loop.

1. Close all normal suction valves of acid unloading pumps.

2. Close day tank filling valve.

3. Open drain valve of leaking tank.

4. Open inlet valve which is connected from storage tanks through drain valves.

5. Close filling valve of leaking tank.

6. Open filling valve of standby (empty) tank.

7. Start the acid transfer pump-1 or 2 and check pressure.

8. After completion of transfer of acid from one tank to another acid tank, the pressure will come down.

9. Close drain valve of leaking tank and filling valve of stand by tank.

10. Close inlet valve which is connected from storage tank through drain valve.

11. Drain the residual amount acid in leaking tank through drain valve.

12. After completion of proper cleaning attend for maintenance work on point of leakage.
