There are some words like honest and hour which begin
with the letter ‘h’ but ‘h’ is not pronounced. So we use ‘an’
before these words.

Example:
 He is an honest man.
 I will finish my work in an hour.

Sometimes we use ‘a’ before some words like


uniform, unity and unicorn even though they start
with a vowel. This is because ‘an’ is used when the first
sound (not letter) is a vowel. Here ‘u’ is pronounced as
‘yu’ and ‘y’ is a consonant.

Example:

 He is wearing a uniform.

 A unicorn has a horn on its forehead.

Use of ‘The’

Read these sentences carefully:

 The sun shines in the sky.

 The earth is round.

 I can see the moon in the sky.

 The Ramayana is a holy book.

In these sentences ‘the’ is used before particular nouns like


the ‘sun’, ‘sky’, ‘earth’, ‘moon’ and Ramayana. ‘The’ is used
before those nouns which are only one of a kind.
