Starting a Project

File > New > Multitrack Session

Make sure you set your folder

into the correct location, such
as your USB stick

Importing Audio

File > Import > File… > Choose your audio file
Click and drag your file to place your imported audio file onto your editing
space.

Different Workspaces

There are a few different workspaces that you will need to use when editing your
audio.

First is the Multitrack editor. This allows you to arrange multiple audio files and mix
them together. So if you are trying to build a sound using multiple recordings, this is
what you will use.
Secondly is the waveform editor. This is if you want to edit a specific piece of
audio. It allows you to highlight sections, make edits and process effects
easier.

Cutting

There are a couple of ways to cut / edit audio.

If you want to quickly top and tail clips then you can use the razor blade tool, similar
to how you would in Premiere.
If you want to be more precise and either cut out sections, or make tighter
cuts, you should load the audio clip in the waveform editor.

To highlight, you should click and drag on the area you wish to edit.

Transitions

To fade audio clips in / out, you should click and drag the symbol on the
multitrack editor. It is important to ensure audio doesn’t noticeably cut out and this is
a solution to prevent this.

Panning

This is useful to determine whether sound is coming out of the right, left or both
speakers. It can be used to good effect to position characters during conversations
or for example, if a sound is happening out of scene such as someone in the
background making a noise.
Audio Effects

Audio effects can be used to manipulate your sounds in multiple ways. From
making them sound like they have been recorded in different sized rooms, to
completely changing how they sound.

To add effects

Effects Rack > choose the arrow to the side of the track you want to add the effect
to > choose the effect you want to add. Alternatively, you can select from the
Effects toolbar at the top of the screen.

Different Effects

Reverb – Think of this as the size of room or space you want your sound to be in. The
bigger the ‘room size’ the more distant a sound you will get. Everything you listen to
on a daily basis has reverb. If you are adding it – be careful how much you are
using. Do you want it to be noticeable or do you just want to create a realistic
effect?

Telephone – If you want to recreate a phone conversation, you can make a few
adjustments to get this desired effect. You can limit the audible frequencies (EQ) to
just between 400Hz and 4KHz. Audition also has an effect called FFT. Within this there
is a pre-set option called ‘OnHold 400->4K’. Choosing this should give you an effect
similar that you can modify to suit your production.
Exporting

There are two methods that you’ll need to know for exporting.

Exporting Multitrack

You will follow this method if you need to export a whole session of multiple audio
clips.

Once you have edited your audio ready to add it to your film, you need to export it.

To do this, choose the selection tool and highlight the area / time you want to
export.

Go to file > Export > Multitrack Mixdown > Time Selection > choose .wav file > ‘OK’

Exporting Individual Audio Files

To export a single edited audio file, you choose File > Export > File…

Please choose where to save it and export it as a .wav for a better quality sound.
