Friction between the molecules of a fluid resists fluid change and deformation. The
weight of the marble, which is the gravitational force, also causes tension on the liquids.
In our experiment it was observed that the marbles took longer to sink when dropped
into the cups filled with corn syrup and honey than they did when dropped into the cups
filled with water and cooking oil. Therefore, it was shown that high viscosity fluids like
honey and corn syrup resist the changes caused by these forces the best than through
low viscosity fluids such as water and cooking oil.

Sugar in Water

a. Before it was added to water, if I look closely at each piece of sugar particles it
comes in form of small cubelike or crystalline shape.

b. When sugar is placed in water, the sugar can no longer be seen. It forms a
solution water is a solvent and sugar is the solute. It is because sugar molecules
start separating from one another because they are attracted to the water
molecules which makes sugar dissolve in water.

c. Water dissolves sugar because in a similar way they are polar molecules. The
polar water molecules attract the negative and positive areas on the polar sugar
molecules which make sugar dissolve in water. The positive area of a water
molecule is attracted to the negative area of a sugar molecule while the negative
area of a water molecule is attracted to the positive area of the sugar molecule.

d. The positive and negative areas on water molecules interact with these negative
and positive parts of sugar molecules. The bonds of sugar molecules are broken
apart and are attached to the water molecules. This is because water molecules
broke up the sugar molecules at some point, dissolving the sugar.

Salt in Water

a. Before it was added to water, salt particles were in a form of small cubelike or
crystalline shape.
b. When salt is placed in water, the salt can no longer be seen. It forms a solution
water is a solvent and salt is the solute. Similarly, it was observed that just like
sugar, salt molecules also dissolve in water.

c. Water dissolves salt because water consists of polar molecules that are attracted

to sodium and chloride of the salt molecules . The sodium and chlorine ions
separate and attach themselves to individual water molecules.

d. The positive and negative polar ends of a water molecule are attracted to the
positive sodium ions and negative chloride ions in the salt. The bonds of salt
molecules are broken apart and are attached to the water molecules. This is
because water molecules broke up the salt molecules at some point, dissolving
the salt.

Water molecules attract each other and tend to stick together called cohesion. The drop
of water on one side, stick together and form a dome/spherical shape on the petri dish.
It was observed that the water on one side, formed drops because hydrogen bonding is
strongest in water. On the other side, when we reduce the surface tension by adding
surfactants such as dishwashing solution disrupts the cohesion of the water molecules,
causing the water to form sheets rather than drops because detergent reduces the
hydrogen bonding of the water.

A needle in a paper that was dropped onto the water surface soaks but it stays on the
surface on both setups. It was observed that the needle floats on top of the water
because of surface tension. Surface tension happens because the water molecules at
the surface of the water are strongly attracted to each other called cohesion. When
dishwashing solution is added the water molecules aren't drawn together as strongly but
it still floats. As a result, the liquid’s surface is still strong enough to support the weight
of the needle and if we keep on adding dishwashing solution possibly it will sink.
Although in our experiment both did float there is a possibility that the second setup will
eventually sink if we keep on adding more dishwashing solutions.

It was observed that acetone was rank 1 and water was rank 2. Water evaporates most
slowly because its molecules are attracted to one another by hydrogen bonding.
Acetone does not participate in hydrogen bonding, so its intermolecular forces are
comparatively weaker, and it evaporates most quickly.

It was observed that water’s rate of flow is faster than the honey. It is because I have
noticed that honey was “thicker” or harder to pour which leads to honey more viscous
to water. Viscosity is the resistance of a liquid to flow.

The drop of water produces a larger drop than the detergent solution. It is because plain tap water has
higher surface tension that is why it can come together a large drop. In contrast, drops obtained from
the detergent solution are weaker and easily breaks apart due to detergent - a surfactant that reduces
the surface tension of the water.

Activity 2

The needle in a paper which was put over plain tap water floats while the one which was put over a
detergent solution sinks. The needle floats over the plain tap water because it has higher density than
that of water and it was placed horizontally on the water with a lot of caution leading to its floatation
with the help of the surface tension of water. But when the it was placed over a detergent solution, the
detergent present disrupted the surface tension of the water.

Activity 3

The acetone evaporates faster than the water. It is due to the fact that water has a hydrogen bonding
which is the main player behind the attraction of its molecules while acetone doesn't have any hydrogen
bonding which means that its intermolecular forces are weaker and it tend to evaporate faster.

Activity 4

The water's rate of flow is faster than the honey. It is because the honey has a thick or sticky consistency
which results to high resistance to flow.
