I. Context and Rationale

Cognizant to Republic Act No. 9003 which states that the practice of waste

segregation to facilitate reuse and recycling does not only reduce the cost of

collection and disposal of garbage but conserves the natural resources of materials

and avoid wasteful consumption of goods. Thus, Molinete Elementary School

commits to the protection, preservation and conservation of the ecosystem thus

making our place school litter free.

Waste segregation means dividing waste into dry and wet. Dry waste includes

wood and related products, metals and glass. Wet waste typically refers to

organic waste usually generated by eating establishments and is heavy in weight due

to dampness. Waste generated as part of daily human activities not only damages

natural resources, but the potential negative impacts on the environment or human

health cannot be excluded (Zurbrügg 2003; United Nations 2010).

Molinete is now facing a serious problem regarding proper waste disposal

which need an utmost action and concern from the school teaching force and

personel as well as the pupils.

This study aims to identify the practices of Grade Five pupils towards Waste

Segregation at Molinete Elementary School and to apply different activities that help

to maintain cleanliness inside and outside school premises.

Action Research Methods

The research design used in this study was the descriptive qualitative

methods such as survey and questionnaires. This method was used to gather data

and information related to the study.

a. Participants and /or other Sources of Data and Information

The subjects of the study were the 28 Grade Five pupils who have been

found out not segregate waste properly at Molinete Elementary School during the

school year 2018-2019.

This study is focused on the practices of Grade Five pupils towards waste

Segregation. The study employed descriptive qualitative methodologies. The

qualitative methodology was appropriate to this study because it allowed the

researcher to get the data directly from the subjects themselves by

sitting with the respondents and hear their views, voices, perceptions and
expectations in detail. The descriptive qualitative method such as survey and

questionnaires were prepared to improve the proper waste segregation of Grade Five

Pupils at Molinete Elementary School

b. Data Gathering Method

The researcher used a survey and questionnaires to collect data and gather

information about the performance of severely wasted and wasted pupils.

Survey ensures a more accurate sample to gather targeted results in which to

draw conclusions and make important decisions. On the other hand, questionnaire is

a research tool primarily used to collect information from a population of individual in
