Introduction

Today, a single resident produces an average of 0.7 kilogram

of waste a day, about “130 percent higher” than the global average of 0.3

kg per person per day, said Emy Aguinaldo , the executive director of the

National Solid Waste Management Commission. From the citing records of

the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority , the Department of

Environment and Resources produced about 8,400 to 8,600 tons of trash

per day.

Based on research, , a single resident produces an average of 0.7

kilogram of waste a day about “130 percent higher” than the global average of

0.3 kg per person per day, said Emy Aguinaldo, the executive director of the

National Solid Waste Management Commission. From the citing records of

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the Department of Environment and

Resources produced about 8400 to 8600 tons of trash per day in just Metro

Manila. Half of the garbage from Metro Manila is biodegradable. About sixteen

percent of the garbage are plastics while seventeen percent of it are papers and

the rest are ceramics, leather, discarded metal and rubber.

There are lots of garbage that we humans produce and many of these are

plastics, but how can we help to solve this kind of problem? Using the 3r’s isn’t

enough to lessen the garbage around us. As a STEM student we must do

something. So our research is entitled the extract oil of Lemon (Citrus Limon) as

polystyrene dissolver. Let’s start discussing about our title.

Every country around the world has a common problem with

increasing amount of garbage. These garbage produce in many ways and

unfortunately, have bad effect on ecosystem. If governments and individuals do

not try to reduce this problem, in future we have more problems. So we decided

to do this research to help our community.

First, we have Lemon. Lemon a yellow, oval citrus fruit with thick

skin and fragrant, acidic juice. This kind of fruit is acidic. It has a pH( power of

Hydrogen) of 2.30. In this RESEARCH entitled ‘The extract oil of lemon as

polystyrene dissolver, we have here the extract oil of lemon called Limonene.

Limonene is a colorless liquid hydrocarbon. Limonene is the major component in

the oil of citrus fruit peels.

Polystyrene is a versatile plastic used to make a wide variety of

consumer products. As a hard, solid plastic, it is often used in products that

require clarity, such as food packaging and laboratory ware. When combined

with various colorants, additives or other plastics, polystyrene is used to make

appliances, electronics, automobile parts, toys,

gardening pots and equipment and more. Polystyrene also is made into a foam

material, called expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS),

which is valued for its insulating and cushioning properties. Foam polystyrene

can be more than 95 percent air and is widely used to make home and appliance

insulation, lightweight protective packaging, surfboards, foodservice and food

packaging, automobile parts, roadway and road bank stabilization systems and

more.

We all know that amount of garbage is now increasing. We must be

aware to the problem of our Mother earth. We, as student of Science Technology

Engineering and Mathematics want to help first our community. We can help to

solve the problem of our community through this research. We can help to lessen

the garbage especially the polystyrene or we commonly known as the styro

foams. Let us be one of the savers of our Mother Earth!

Now, 2018, there’s a lot of waste that is all around us. What if on

the next 2 or 5 or 10 years? More garbage. We need more space for the next

generation and where will our garbage can be put? Of course the space that can

be used instead of building houses for the next generation will be used by tons of

garbage. The main purpose of this study is to help first the community then lastly

to the whole world if this will be successful.

Statement of the problem

Generally, the main objective of this study is to lessen the specific kind of plastics
which are the polystyrene

 What is the effect of extracted oil for styrofoams?

 How effective is the extracted oil?
 Will this product can dissolve polystyrenes?

Hypothesis

1. There is a significant difference in the dissolving polystyrene on every trials

made.

2. There is no significant difference in the dissolving polystyrene on every trials

made.

Significance of the study

This study generally wants to help to lessen the garbage here in our community,

especially this type of plastic, polystyrene or which we know as the styro foams. Reusing

the peels of lemon would be useful for our community by using this research.
