Battery Pack Replacement

This document explains how to replace the battery pack in early and late model
servers.
The new batteries are contained in a module that plugs directly into late model
servers. To install the batteries into earlier model servers, remove the battery pack
from the sheet metal case before installation, as explained below. There are two
early model servers, and one late model.

For all types of servers, remove the server fascia or bezel (the server cover plate)
for access to the batteries.

Carefully read the “Caution” and “Warning” sections

To begin replacing the battery pack for both early and late models, follow these
steps:
1. Identify the server type (one of the two early models, or the late model) before
installing batteries. One of the early servers uses a battery retention bracket,
and one does not. See the three pictures of each server, below, to identify the
server type.
2. For early servers only, first remove the battery pack from the metal module.
a. See the section - For early servers only, separate the battery pack
from the module case.
3. After identifying the server type, proceed to one of the sections below:
a. Replace battery pack, early server without retention bracket
b. Replace the battery pack, early server with retention bracket
c. Replace the battery module in a late model server
4. Collect System Backups and Diagnostics
5. Reset Battery Age and Restart Chassis Monitor (as necessary)
6. Collect a final Diagnostic

Caution: If possible, the server should be shut down before replacing the
NVRAM battery backup pack, but it is not required.
During the replacement procedure, there will be a period of time when
the NVRAM contents are not backed up by the battery pack. If a power
failure occurs during this period, NVRAM contents may be lost. See the
appropriate hardware reference or maintenance documentation for
procedures to power down a server.

3. Replace the Physical Battery
Important Warning!
When plugging the new connector into both types of early servers, the connector
plug must first be positioned so the retention clip is on the left side before
pushing the connector plug in. If you push the connector plug in with the
retention clip on the right side, serious damage to the server may occur. (These
instructions don’t apply to the late model server.)

Ensure that the retention clip is facing LEFT and

is directly aligned with the tab before insertion.
DO NOT FORCE THE PLLUG IN! When correctly
aligned, it will slide in easily.
