FACTORS AFFECTING READING ABILITY OF GRADE 7 STUDENTS IN DAO-AN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

I. Context and Rationale

Dao-an National High School is one of the improving and best performing schools in the Municipality of
San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur. Limonan Elementary School, Dao-an Elementary School, and Laperian
Elementary School serve as the feeder schools.

One of the common problems of the schools is facing nowadays is the reading ability of the students
specifically in subjects in which English is the medium of instruction. Students find it difficult in reading
words, phrases, and sentences and the worst scenario is that there are some who could not even
recognize alphabet letters.

Thus, this research aims to find out the factors affecting reading ability of Grade 7 students in Dao-an
High School for this academic year 2019-2020.

III.RESEARCH QUESTION

This study will determine the factors affecting reading ability of Grade-7 students in Dao-an NHS.

Specifically, this will answer the following questions:

1. What are the factors affecting the reading ability of grade 7 students of Dao-an NHS

of the school year S.Y.2019-2020.

2. Do the factors correlate with reading ability of grade 7 students of Dao-an NHS? If yes,

to what extent

a. Socioeconomic status of the family

b. Collaboration of student and his/her family

c. Peer influence

d.Reading materials

e. Teacher’s aptitude in administering reading activities

f.Self/attitude

IV. Scope and Limitation

The study focuses mainly on the factors affecting the reading ability of grade 7 students of Dao-

an National High School of the current school year (S.Y. 2019-2020). The respondents of this

research were the Grade 7 students, their parents and all grade 7 teachers.

V. Methods of Research

Sampling

The respondent (all Grade 7 students) will take a reading test (PHIL IRI). In order to compare the

data the researcher portioned out 90% of all pupils with the highest results in reading literacy

(group A) and 90% of students with the lowest reading literacy achievements (group Z).
Data Collection

The researcher will administer a survey to the respondents using the researcher made

questionnaires. This will serve as the primary source of data. In developing the questionnaires

and surveys, the researcher will consult the concerned authorities, the School head and

experienced reading teachers.

Ethical Issues

Since the respondents of the research are grade 7 students proper care was observed in

collecting and handling data. Confidentiality was strictly imposed with high regards of Gender

Assessment and Development. Researcher seeks the consent of the institution to conduct the

study, as well as respondents gave their consent were fully informed and that they are part of a

study.

Plan for data analysis

Factors making the biggest difference between the students of two groups will be explored

and traced in order to examine the data. These factors can be grouped in several fields:

social- economic factors of pupil’s family, collaboration of a student and his/her family,

school profiling of the peer influence, reading materials, teacher’s aptitude in administering

reading activities, and self/attitude that might have contributed to the problem.

To evaluate the factors mentioned above, independent T-test will be used as statistical treartment

for this study. Data analysis will include frequency counts, means, percentages, and standard

deviations to summarize items in the survey. The data will bep resnted according to the research

questions of the study. For each question, quantitative data will first be describes in table form,

following which is a qualitative data presentation.
