Ending another great year!

Another year gone by – I am sure like me many of you are wondering how
this happened.

Business wise it has not been an easy year. The Rand has continued to
fall and resource prices are still low. 20% to 30% increases in the prices
of imported capital equipment has meant that project and maintenance
budgets are squeezed. Some projects put on hold and some cancelled.
Continued labour unrest and above inflation increases results in a
perception that South Africa is a risky environment to invest.

But us Africans are resilient. I was fortunate enough to be at the SAIMC

Gala Dinner on the 25th October and was excited by the enthusiasm and
dedication shown by this team of control and instrumentation engineers.
Their work in education and support of infrastructure development
together with ECSA is commendable.

At Endress+Hauser we too continue to invest. In this edition you will

read not only about the inauguration of our new head office building in
Sandton, but also about the new flow calibration center at our offices
representing an investment of almost R1,8million. In fact the floor
space of our service and calibration facilities has increased by more than
100%. In 2013 almost 60% of our service work done has been in planned
commissioning, preventative maintenance and calibration contracts.
Plants become more reliable and breakdowns fewer.

I would like to invite our customers to join me on a training tour of

Endress+Hauser factories and the Hannover Fair in 2014. This extensive
event is only planned every 2 to 3 years and detailed training events are
recognised by ECSA for CPD accreditation. You will find more details in
this edition.

To friends, customers and colleagues alike I would like to wish you all a
peaceful and safe festive season and good luck for the new year to come.

With regards.

Calibration
The science of applied accuracy

Accuracy – it’s the one test no flowmeter can afford to fail. Why? Because
accuracy equals money: “A customer paying 100 dollars per barrel (of crude oil)
and edging an improvement of only 0.1% on inaccuracy for 100 000 barrels per
day could be looking at 3.6 million dollars a year in additional profit,” explains
Reinhold H. Bietzker, Endress+Hauser’s Global Industry Manager Oil & Gas.

At Endress+Hauser we understand that high measuring accuracy under ideal

reference operating conditions isn’t everything. What is of crucial importance
though, is that the devices do what they are supposed to do in everyday
practical circumstances. Which is why calibration is accuracy’s best friend.

All flowmeters – whether Coriolis, electro-magnetic, vortex, ultrasonic or

thermal – require periodic recalibration and verification. The frequency of these
operations depends on the stringency of the quality and safety requirements
applicable to the meters and to the overall system. The plant maintenance
schedule usually defines the calibration intervals, depending on how and where
the meter is used. Calibration can, for example, rectify the mechanical changes
that can occur as a sensor ages or correct the drift in the electronic signal
analyser.

Calibration lingo defined

When determining accuracy, calibration is but one link in a chain of quality
control measures governed by internationally recognised standards. Equally
important is measurement uncertainty, traceability, accreditation and
verification. Let’s take a closer look at each in turn.

• Calibration
In simple terms, the purpose of a calibration is to ascertain whether
deviations are present. Calibration occurs first in the factory after
manufacturing and then again after the device has been in operation for
some time. Calibration then allows for the correction of either condition,
thus restoring accuracy.

When calibrating a flowmeter, the measured value displayed on the

device is compared to the ‘true’ reference value from a calibration rig. The
process further involves documenting the measurement deviation (a.k.a.
measurement accuracy), calculating the measurement uncertainty and
creating a calibration log or certificate. Calibrations are conducted under
precisely specified reference conditions; no technical intervention in the
device is required.

• Measurement uncertainty
Uncertainty is the most important quality criterion in any comparison
between calibration facilities. The uncertainty percentage expresses the
possibility that errors could have occurred during the calibration process
– thus, the smaller the figure of uncertainty the better. Good uncertainty
ratings will appear suspect to experienced quality auditors unless they
are derive from accepted standards or were obtained through accredited
calibration laboratories.

• Accreditation
Accreditation refers to the formal recognition of a body’s technical
competence in performing specific services, such as calibration. Only

“Only fully traceable calibration rigs to ISO/IEC 17025 can really be trusted.” Is that true? Yes, because verification
comparisons between device under test, calibration rig, test equipment and a country’s hierarchically highest

consequently of the measuring uncertainty stated by the device manufacturer. This is one of the main reasons why
Endress+Hauser has had all flow calibration rigs accredited by official bodies.

Measuring, calibrating and documenting – the new Memobase
Plus offers everything for highly efficient sensor management.

Jessica Nentwich, Product Manager

Calibrating in a process environment in order to optimize

measurement quality. Does it have to be that way?
No! Imagine you could calibrate all of the inductive
Memosens sensors from a process while sitting
comfortably in a laboratory. Imagine you could
call up all of the calibration and measured values,
data about the operating condition and similar
information with just the click of a mouse at any
time. Thanks to Memobase Plus this is now
reality – and this is for up to four sensors at
the same time.

Memobase Plus is based, just like the Liquiline

platform, on the Plug & Play concept. The intelligent
software recognizes digital Memosens sensors (pH/
redox, conductivity, DO, chlorine) automatically and
provides the appropriate functions. The program is
simple and easy-to-understand, sorted by work tasks and
designed with instructional assistance. Thus, safe, error-
free work is built-in.

Local temperature certification and testing 19

Local temperature
certification and testing

Endress+Hauser Pyrotemp is home to our local

temperature calibration laboratory. Established to
international standards, in July it received the ISO17025
accreditation by the South African National Accreditation
System (SANAS). (Facility accreditation number is 367).

The local production centre was already accredited as an

ISO9001 facility in April 2011 by the Swiss management
quality assessment company SQS Group (SQS)
All calibration devices are traceable and certified
according to international standards monitored by the
independent authorities DKD , SIT and SANAS thereby
ensuring the highest quality and accuracy of our factory
calibrations.

Factory calibrations can be issued by any laboratory,

whereas calibrations made to SIT, DKD or SANAS
accreditation must be performed in an accredited
laboratory and are accepted worldwide.

Endress+Hauser Pyrotemp has the capability to handle

temperatures from -20 ºC to +1550 ºC thus making it one
of the most advanced temperature calibration facilities in
South Africa.
