to keep her incontinent dog dry and prevent urine scald from making the poor dog’s skin
raw, I considered sharing the tips I used for Sophie.
Then after giving it more thought I decided to open the conversation on our Facebook
page. I thought there might be some new products on the market I didn’t know about or
some helpful techniques other pet parents were using. The response was overwhelming
as dozens of people shared their favorite tips to keep an incontinent dog dry. Many of the
ideas were completely new to me and I appreciate everyone who shared their advice.
Several pet parents asked if I could compile a list of these suggestions so they could
keep it on hand. You will find that list below.
Before you read the list and post it on your refrigerator door I have one small request;
please check with your pet’s personal veterinarian before you try any of these products or
techniques. Every case of paralysis and incontinence is unique and only your veterinarian
fully understands your dog’s complete medical condition. Please let your vet be the
authority before trying any of the suggestions below.

9/29/2019 Tips To Keep An Incontinent Dog Dry and Treat Urine Scald
Urine is an acidic substance that can burn and irritate sensitive skin if it’s allowed to
remain in contact with the skin for a long period of time. It happens when urine hits the
skin on their lower belly because of an overflowing bladder or constant dribbling. Urine
scald is painful and causes a rash to develop. When you think about urine scald, picture
a human infant with a bad case of diaper rash. We all know that is no fun.
In a previous story I posted how a paralyzed dog with a leaky bladder can wind up lying
in his own urine for hours because he can’t reach to clean his soiled skin or move away
from a puddle of urine. The problem can quickly escalate to urine scald which in turn
causes pain for the dog.

9/29/2019 Tips To Keep An Incontinent Dog Dry and Treat Urine Scald
UTI – First check with your veterinarian for the possibility of a Urinary Tract
Infection. Sometimes a leaky bladder is a symptom of a UTI which needs medical
attention.
Express – The best method to keep a dog dry and redirect urine flow away from
the body is by setting up regular/routine times to express their bladder. (Sophie’s
bladder was emptied 4 times a day, every day.) If you don’t know how to do this, it is
a skill worth learning from your veterinarian.
Baby Wipes and a Soft Towel – Keep your dog’s skin clean with baby wipes and
dry with a clean, soft, fluffy towel.
Proin – Check with your veterinarian to see if Proin is right for your dog. This oral
medication works by tightening the urethral sphincter to control leakage.
Barrier Creams – Be sure the product does not contain zinc oxide which is
dangerous for dogs. Some of pet parents’ favorites are: A and D ointment without
zinc oxide, Vaseline, Udder Ointment, oconut oil (don’t let a dog ingest too much)
and organic chamomile and echinacea lotion.
Cornstarch – This household product is used as a topical barrier to neutralize the
acid in urine.
Medicated and Baby Powders – Powders that do not contain talc are used to
keep skin dry.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Cranberry – Apple cider vinegar is used externally to
neutralize urine and cranberry is added to a dog’s diet to prevent leakage due to a
UTI.
Calmoseptine Cream – One pet parent whose dog is enrolled in the Iowa State
School of Veterinary Medicine Clinical Trials for Paralyzed Dogs impressed the staff
with how well this cream improved her dog’s skin. Calmoseptine is available at drug
stores and is formulated to treat minor burns. The product contains zinc oxide so
be sure to ask your vet if the amount of zinc in the cream is okay for your dog. The
cream can also be used to treat the sores paralyzed dogs get from dragging his
feet.
Antifungal, Antiseptic, Antimicrobial and Antibiotic Creams and Sprays –
Some of the top brands used most often are Vetericyn Wound & Skin Care, Soothe
& Cool Perineal No-Rinse Wash and American Kennel Club Tea Tree Soothing
Spray. Be sure to check with your veterinarian before starting any over-the-counter
medications.
Belly Bands – Some pet parents loved these while others did not. Some were
resourceful and handmade belly bands from ace bandages and Velcro, while others
purchased custom or ready-made bands for male dogs. Barkertime makes custom

Hi, This sounds like it would be very helpful. I’m having a hard time picturing it
though. Do you have a pic, and who is the manufacturer? Also, Oasis makes a
great bellyband that has a strap to keep it up. I’ve tried hundreds of products to
keep my pugs band up, spent up to $100 on things to hold, yet nothing worked
well. This is $15, and has saved my sanity. I also use Aveeno baby rash cream
on my boy after I clean him. It’s oatmeal based, and keeps him very
comfortable. Inexpensive.

Linda, Thanks for sharing the products that work for your Pug. In answer to
your question about the donut shaped inner tube that one pet parent uses;
she was referring to an inflatable round tube like the ones you see for use
in a swimming pool. But she got one small enough for her dog to sit on
while relieving himself. That way the dog didn’t have to squat as far. Hope
this makes sense. I think it’s a clever and inexpensive tool for dogs with
hind end weakness.

Jewels, Thanks for your question. The pet mom who shared how she
used an inflatable tube used it to support her dog’s weak legs when
she squatted. She didn’t mention whether the dog sat inside the inner
tube or not, but that would be my assumption. And it sounds like she
used it for bowel movements. You might want to try a support/lifting
harness for your dog. It will allow you to help support your dog’s weight
as she squats so she doesn’t bend too low. A harness can be your
best tool for so many activities where a dog with hind leg weakness
needs support. And another suggestion is to keep baby wipes on hand
for quick cleanups.

Heather, The pet owner who suggested this tip said the Apple Cider Vinegar is used
externally. Here is the exact wording: Apple Cider Vinegar and Cranberry – Apple
cider vinegar is used externally to neutralize urine and cranberry is added to a dog’s
diet to prevent leakage due to a UTI. If you have any concerns about giving ACV to
your dog please check with your veterinarian. I am sorry the suggestion didn’t give
more details such as if you should dilute the vinegar.

I used apple cider vinegar to cure my dogs allergic skin rash. I used it externally at a
dilution of about 1:8 as she had scratched sores on her skin and too acidic would have
hurt. Nothing else helped as much except frequent washing with zymox shampoo. The
vets medication did nothing and she is now rash free for months. I imagine this would
help urine burn too.
When my paralysed dog had a bit of urine burn I washed the area often and applied
bepanthen antiseptic cream which is a zinc free barrier cream usually used for sore
nipples when breastfeeding and babies. Zinc can be toxic if ingested by dogs which is
why I chose this brand. Also it has vitamin b5 which promotes healing and it works. I’m
not sure if it’s available in the U.S. I’m in Australia.

incontinent. We have had her in baby diapers and also cloth diapers with a Poise sanitary
napkin inside and she has now a cyst by her pee hole and an infection. We change her

cannot have her running around our house peeing and pooping everywhere!! HELP! The
vet suggested a drag bag but I have a problem seeing how that would be more beneficial
than a diaper

Joe, I’m sorry Harlee is having health issues related to her incontinence. I assume
your veterinarian doesn’t want her in a diaper because the urine is hurting the skin in
that area. I would get your veterinarian to teach you how to express Harlee’s bladder.
I’m attaching a link to a video I have about it, but one-on-one training is the best.
Routine bladder expressing (3-4 times a day) will keep your dog’s skin free of urine
burns and infections.
Dogs also suffer from urinary retention, where they don’t fully empty their bladder.
I’m attaching a story about that too for you to read.
A drag bag could also benefit her because the urine won’t be sitting on her body.
That said, it seems like a messy way to do things. I like a website called Barkertime.
Take a look. They have ALL kinds of products for incontinent dogs. You might also
want to switch from baby diapers to dog diapers because (again) the opening for the
tail might let her skin breathe. Once her infection has cleared, your goals should be
to express her 3-4 times a day, or keep her skin clean and dry if she is wearing a
diaper. You might want to try some of the barrier creams suggested in the Tips to
keep an incontinent dog dry story. Do not use anything with zinc oxide. If she leaks,
you might want to ask your vet for a medication like Prion that will keep her dry.
Please think of this as a starting point. Feel free to send any other questions you
have or join us on our Facebook page where you can talk with other pet owners.
