Student instructions
• The average grade of all five homework assignments (5EWA3) is equal to 10% of the final
grade of 5EWA0.

• Fill in your solutions (including all important intermediate steps) on the answer sheet.
Put your final answers in the bottom right corners of the boxes.

• Do not forget to put units with your answers.

• Give your answers with at least 5 decimals and do not round intermediate answers (tip:
Use Matlab).

• Your answers should be handwritten.

• Scan your answers with sufficient resolution (i.e. at least 300 dpi). Note that only sub-
missions in portrait mode will be graded (failing to do so results in a zero).

• Submit your answers as a single pdf file (failing to do so results in a zero).

• The filenames have to comply to the following rules (failing to do so results in a zero):

LASTNAME STUDENTNUMBER Homework2.pdf

LASTNAME should not contain any prefixes such as “van” or “van den”. In case of multiple last
names, use the one which appears first in the Canvas system (e.g. in case of J. Alves da Costa,
use Alves).

STUDENTNUMBER has 7 digits starting with 0 or 1.

Hence, S. van Eindhoven with student number 0123456 submits homework assignment 2 with
the file name: Eindhoven 0123456 Homework2.pdf

Exercises
A separately excited DC motor driving a conveyor belt is connected to a power source supplying
an armature voltage Va of 600 V, and current Ia of 50 A; the armature resistance Ra is 0.5 Ω.
The resistance of the field winding Rf is 100 Ω, and a second power source supplies a field
voltage Vf of 100 V. The motor is rotating at 1500 rpm and has a friction and windage torque
TF W of 20 Nm. Assume magnetically linear materials.

Exercise 1) Calculate the developed torque Td .

Exercise 2) Calculate the load torque applied to a gear connected to the shaft of the motor.

The field voltage Vf is now increased to 120 V.

Exercise 3) What is the new supply voltage Va to be applied if the same torque Td is to be
developed at the same rotation speed?

A shunt DC motor has a field resistance Rf of 100 Ω and an armature resistance Ra of 5 Ω; the
resistance of the rheostat can be neglected. A blocked rotor test is performed with a voltage
Va of 20 V and a blocking torque Tb of 10 Nm. The friction and winding torque TF W can be
neglected in this case. Assume magnetically linear materials.

Exercise 4) Calculate the blocking torque when an armature voltage Va of 40 V is applied.

If a similar blocked rotor experiment is performed on a separately excited motor by doubling
the armature voltage Va , by how much would the blocking torque increase?

The motor is now supplied with a voltage Va = 40 V, and is coupled to a fan that has a load
torque TL linearly dependent on the rotation speed ω, TL = 0.1ω Nm.

Exercise 5) Calculate the speed of the fan under such condition.

Exercise 6) Calculate the current supplied by the power source.

A series excited DC motor is connected to a 300 V power supply delivering 60 A. The field
winding resistance Rf is 0.8 Ω, the armature resistance Ra is 0.3 Ω, the motor is rotating at
1000 rpm, and the load torque TL is 130 Nm. Assume magnetically linear materials.

Exercise 7) Calculate the friction and windage torque TF W .

Exercise 8) Calculate the efficiency of the motor taking into account the friction and winding
losses.

A resistance Rs of 0.2 Ω is added in series to the field resistance, while keeping Vl = 300 V
and the same developed torque Td .

2
Exercise 9) Calculate the new rotating speed of the motor. If the applied voltage Vl were
−300 V, would the motor rotate in the opposite direction?

Now the motor is used as a generator; the resistance Rs and the voltage supply are removed
and replaced with a resistance Rl of 3 Ω. A torque of 10 Nm is applied to turn the shaft. Take
into account the friction and windage torque TF W , which is speed-independent.

Exercise 10) Calculate the rotation speed of the shaft.
