About the location

The Saalumarada Thimmakka Tree Park is located Badagbettu, Karnataka. It is named after
Saalumarada Thimmakka, a renowned environmentalist famous for planting and tending to 385
banyan trees between Hulikal and Kudur over four kilometers.
Type of Ecosystems Observed

The ecosystem seen here in the

Saalumarada Thimmakka tree park is a
forest ecosystem. A forest ecosystem is a
natural woodland unit consisting of biotic
components functioning together with the
abiotic components. On observing the
environment, we can conclude that it is a
Tropical Deciduous Forest.

Tropical Deciduous Forests are located in

regions where rainfall is seasonal and a
definite dry season exists. Distinction of
trees in different regions is higher than
that of equatorial region.
These forest formations are dense and
lush during the wet summers, but become
a dry landscape during the dry winters
when most trees shed their leaves.

Features of a Tropical Deciduous Forest:

Most of the trees have broad leaves and
provide hardwood.
Trees of heights from fifty to hundred
meters are common.
Thick undergrowth of shrubs, bushes
and bamboo is common.
Structural Components of a Forest

The key structural components are plants, animals, microbes, soils and the atmosphere.

Saalumarada Thimmakka Tree Park displays various plants such as trees, flowers and
herbs which are present all around the site
Types of Herbs Observed

Lawsonia Inermis.

Family: Lythraceae
Common name: Henna
Used in making temporary tattoos.

Costus ingneus.

Family: Zingiberaceae

Common name: insulin

Used for treating diabetes

Sauropus androgynous.

Family: Phyllanthacea
Common name: star gooseberry
It is a very good source of vitamins K, B and C.
Types of Herbs Observed

Cymbopogon citratus .

Family: Poaceae
Common name: lemon grass
Used as an antibacterial

Gymnema sylvestre.

Family: Asclepiadaceae
Common name: Gymnema
Used as an expectorant in stomach aches
Plants Observed in Tree Park

Utricularia.
They occur wet soil as terrestrial species.
They range in size from 2 millimeters to 10 centimeters wide. They
can be of any color, or of many colors.
These can survive almost anywhere where there is fresh water for
at least part of the year, only Antarctica and some oceanic islands
have no native species.
They grow in moist soils which are poor in dissolved minerals.

Spider Plant.
Chlorophytum comosum, often called
spider plant is a species of perennial
flowering plant.
It is easy to grow as a houseplant.
Variegated forms are the most popular.
It grows to about 60 centimeters high.
It has fleshy, tuberous roots about 5-10
centimetres.

Sandalwood.
It is a class of woods from the trees of
genus Santalum.
The woods are heavy, yellow and fine-
grained, and, unlike many other aromatic
woods, they retain their fragrance for
decades.
Both the wood and the oil produce have a
distinctive fragrance which has been
highly valued for centuries.
Animals and Insects Found

Spiders.

They are arthropods that have eight legs and

chelicerae with fangs able to insert venom
in their victims.
They are the largest order of arachnids.
All of the species are predators except
Bagheera kiplingi which are herbivorous.

Dragonflies.

It is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, infraorder

Anisoptera.
They are agile fliers and predators, and often live near
water.
They are represented in human culture on artefacts such
as pottery, paintings and jewellery.

Frogs.

Frogs are widely distributed, ranging from tropics to

subarctic regions, but the greatest concentration of
species diversity is in the tropical rainforests.
Their skin varies in colour from well-camouflaged
dappled brown, grey and green to vivid patterns of
bright red or yellow and black.
Food Chain and Food Web

Food chain, in ecology, the sequence of transfers of matter and energy in the form of food from
organism to organism. There are unique interactions and relationships which are involved in
the transportation of energy. The energy, once produced and captured, is distributed throughout
the various living organisms. This transfer of energy is termed as the food web.
