➢ Introduction

I am Mubarak Al-Naimi, I am a student at the International school of London Qatar. I am writing

this book to spread the message of Islam, and to clear up some misconceptions about Islam. In
this book I will cover the most basic topics about Islam to give some understanding to
non-muslims. I have chosen this topic to write about as the past couple of years of my life have
changed me. I was impacted with many things that made me look for a way to be spiritually
satisfied, I found Islam to be my gateway to get out of my worldy worries, and I would other
people to do the same. If not, I would have atleast changed some opinions about Islam.

➢ Being Muslim

Being Muslim is not as simple as saying a few words, It needs action. Islam has a few rules that
guide us into becoming true muslims. To be a true muslim you have to belive in several things.
They are called the pillars of imaan (faith), They are:

- Belief in the existence and oneness of God (Allah).

- Belief in the existence of Angels.

- Belief in the existence of the books of which God is the author: the Quran (revealed to
Muhammad), the Gospel (revealed to Jesus), the Torah (revealed to Moses), and
Psalms to David.

- Belief in the existence of all Prophets: Muhammad being the last of them, Jesus the
penultimate, and Moses sent before them.

- Belief in the existence of the Day of Judgment: in that day, humanity will be divided into
two groups: that of paradise and hell. These groups are themselves composed of
subgroups.

- Belief in the existence of God's predestination, whether it involves good or bad.

By believing in Allah as the only true god, and recognizing his sole authority over the universe,
you will naturally come to the conclusion that He alone knows what is best for you. As a Muslim,
you will accept the Quran and take guidance from it. Also, the Hadeeth will be a source of
inspiration for you to live your life by. By believing in Allah, and accepting that He is in control of
everything, you can now accept everything in front of you, both the good and the bad.

Belief in the angels. They are a creation made of light, they have been created solely to serve
Allah. Unlike humans Angels don't have free will and only obey and commit what Allah tells
them to do. When a human does a good deed Angels record it. When a human does a bad
deed Angels record it, they record the intentions behind the actions and the actions of every
6

single human being in a book. On the day of judgement we will be shown this book and
depending on how good or bad we've done we will either go to hell or heaven.

This world contains both good and evil. Allah says in the Quran, “Do you think that because you
declare your faith, that you will not be put to trial in this world”. This means wealth, health,
death. Allah tests people with money to see how they would spend it. Allah tests people with
bad health to test people's trust in Allah and to see if they are patient. Allah tests people with the
death of loved ones to remind people that it is inevitable and to test their patience.

Also, to be become faithful you have to believe in the following things ( Pillars of Islam ):

- Declaration of faith ( Shadah )

- Performing the 5 daily prayers ( Salah )

- Compulsory giving ( Zakaht )

- Fasting the month of Ramadan ( Siyam )

- Pilgrimage to Mecca ( Hajj )

The declaration of faith translates to: I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and
Mohammed is his messenger.

Muslims pray five times a day, at sunrise, mid-day, afternoon, sunset and before midnight.

Muslims are obliged to donate/give 2.5% of their annual earnings to charities to help other
people.

Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for 30 days and nights during Ramadan.

Muslims have to go at least one time to perform pilgrimage to Mecca during the Hajj period.

➢ Values

In Islam, having good values is key. Our role model in Islam is Prophet Mohammed. Every
Muslim should strive to follow his path which is the path of good. He has good character and is
polite, respectful and good mannered.

In many sayings and hadiths it was mentioned many times that he treated all people equally. He
treated Jews in a good manner, Christians in a good manner, and Muslims in a good manner .
He did do not differentiate treating a person well between a Jew and a Muslim. In one particular
Hadith it was said that when his Jewish neighbor who used to insult the Prophet Mohammed
and vandalize his property fell ill, the Prophet Mohammed visited him and wished him well.

Islamic values go hand in hand with mental health. Our values tend to improve our mental
health and make us better people mentally and characteristically.

Islam values mental health and emotional well-being. One of the most important values is:
Morality. By being a person with a good moral compass, you will begin to appreciate yourself a
lot more. By being kind to people you will begin developing a feeling of fulfillment and
respect-fullness to your role in society and the local community. This will also help as it could put
a good impression of yourself into other people’s minds. Therefore you will be treated better.

A very good example of Islamic values aiding mental health is: righteousness and good
character. We are supposed to be fair to everybody and to be respectful, if we are respectful we
will begin to think highly of yourself. By having a good character you will feel more secure and
comfortable. This is because when you follow the footsteps of the prophet you will never feel
bad, you will always feel like you are doing the right thing even when it is unnecessary. Doing
this makes you feel fulfilled and accomplished.

Islamic values can improve a person's wellbeing in many ways. Islam cares so much about
mental health and has given us many examples of how to act better and how to become
mentally healthier.

My go-to solution when I am feeling depressed is to remember what Allah says in the Quran:
“Indeed with hardship is ease, Indeed with hardship is ease.”

➢ Beliefs & Statistics

Islam is an Abrahamic, monotheistic religion teaching that there is only one God (Allah), and
that Muhammad is a messenger of God.It is the world's second-largest religionwith over 1.9
billion followers or 24.4% of the world's population.

Islam teaches that God is merciful, all-powerful, and unique, and has guided mankind through
prophets, revealed scriptures and natural signs The primary scriptures of Islam are the Quran,
believed to be the verbatim word of God, and the teachings and normative examples (called the
sunnah, composed of accounts called hadith) of Muhammad (c. 570 – 8 June 632 CE).

Muslims believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was
revealed many times before through prophets including Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jesus and
the Quran in its Arabic form to be the unaltered and final revelation of God Like other Abrahamic
religions, Islam also teaches a final judgment with the righteous rewarded in paradise and
unrighteous punished in hell. Religious concepts and practices include the Five Pillars of Islam,
which are obligatory acts of worship, and following Islamic law (sharia), which touches on
virtually every aspect of life and society, from banking and welfare to women and the
environment. The cities of Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem are home to the three holiest sites in
Islam.

Aside from the theological narrative, Islam is historically believed to have originated in the early
7th century CE in Mecca, and by the 8th century the Umayyad Caliphate extended from Iberia in
the west to the Indus River in the east. The Islamic Golden Age refers to the period traditionally
dated from the 8th century to the 13th century, during the Abbasid Caliphate, when much of the
historically Muslim world was experiencing a scientific, economic and cultural flourishing. The
expansion of the Muslim world involved various states and dynasties such as the Ottoman
Empire, trade and conversion to Islam by missionary activities (dawah).

Most Muslims are of one of two denominations; Sunni (75–90%) or Shia (10–20%). About 13%
of Muslims live in Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country; 31% live in South Asia, the
largest population of Muslims in the world; 20% in the Middle East–North Africa region, where it
is the dominant religion; and 15% in Sub-Saharan Africa. Muslims are also the majority in
Central Asia, and are also widespread in the Caucasus, and Southeast Asia. India is the country
with the largest Muslim population outside Muslim-majority countries. Sizeable Muslim
communities can also be found in the Americas, China, Europe, and Russia. Islam is the
fastest-growing major religion in the world.

➢ Health
Spiritual, Physical, Mental & Health

In life there are times where we are lonely and feel depressed. There will always be a time
where we feel empty inside even though we might believe that everything is going alright. This
may be because we are missing the spiritual feeling of being connected with Allah swt. Islam is
a religon that focuses on the concept opf peace within yourself. It focuses on your well-being.
Allah has set guidelines for us to be more connected with him, the guidelines are the 5 pillars of
islam. The pillars of islam are: The declaration of faith, The obligatory prayers, Paying
alms/zakat, fasting and pilgriming to Mecca. Each pillar nourishes the soul. In this essay, I will
discuss the pillars and how they maintain and nourish our relationship with our Creator leading
to a healthy spirit and a content heart that is at peace with the self and the world around us.

The first pillar of islam is the declaration of faith also known as the ‘shahdah’. It is where you
declare that Allah is the one true good and that Prophet mohammed is his messenger.
When you declare ‘shahadah’ your soul will awaken to its Creator and the relationship will
begin.

The second pillar of islam is the obligatory prayers. These are 5 prayers that every muslim must
pray as a duty to their lord. Praying and asking for forgiveness will elevate your spiritual health
as you are directly focusing on allah and talking to allah alone in your prayers.

The third pillar of islam is paying alms/zakat. Zakat means giving back to charity, you give 2.5%
of your annual earnings to people who are less fortunate than you are. Doing this will cleanse
your heart from greed and make your mental state better as you will be more content with
Allah’s blessings. This will also increase your spiritual health by helping you become less selfish
and materialistic. Zakat benefits the person who gives as well as the people who receive. The
next pillar, fasting is a benefit to the one who fasts; a spiritual benefit and a physical benefit.

The fourth pillar of Islam is fasting. By fasting a muslim will be able to take care of their physical
health aswell as your spirtual health. Fasting can cleanse your mental health and your physical
health from the toxins as you will become more aware of what you are putting into your system
during the fasting period.

The fifth and final pillar of islam is pilgriming to Mecaa. The activities you partake in during
pilgrimage will improve both your physical and spiritual health. It will cleanse your soul and Allah
will forgive you for all your sins. It will improve your spirituality by allowing you to stop worrying
about past sins and have a fresh start and focus on the future.

➢ Making Connections

In Islam, great care is given to the family and the social order. After the Prophet
Mohammed migrated to Madina, the revelations he received focused on worldly issues
such as marriage, inheritance, crime, and governance.

In Islam, marriage is at the heart of a healthy muslim community. Muslims are

encouraged to marry in order that relationships between the opposite sexes are made
public and children are brought into this world by a mother and father who will do what is
best for them.

Inheritance is strictly governed in Islam. All receive their share of inheritance.

Governance in Islam is another important area that is covered by laws derived from the
Quran and the Hadeeth (sayings and actions of the Prophet Mohammed). There are
strict punishments for theft and murder. The punishment for theft is the cutting of the
hand, and for murder is execution. The primary reason behind these punishments is
prevention. In an ideal Sharia-run society, thieves and murderers would be too scared of
committing crimes because of the strict punishments.

Islam takes great care of the wellbeing of the Muslim communities. They offer fair shares
of inheritance and place strict punishments on crimes such as theft and murder. These
punishments are used to scare criminals from their dirty acts. These laws are called
sharia. They are not used much in the world except in the Middle East. However even
some countries have abandoned the sharia and have settled on justice based/ western
based laws to fit in the modern standard.

Expansion:

Islam has guidelines to socializing. There are ways to talk to people and values to follow.
These guidelines are here to preserve social order.

One of the most important relationships you will have in Islam is marriage. When a
person gets married he has completed half of his faith. To preserve social order, and to
honor the wife when the husband dies the wife gets most of the inheritance. The
inheritance is mostly given to the wife as she is next in charge and will take care of the
children. I believe this symbolises that women are responsible and capable of being
financially independent.

➢ Ending Statement

To end off, Islam has certain guidelines to follow. They are the pillars of imaan (faith) & the
pillars of Islam. These are the most basic things to follow in Islam, You could say its the tip of
the iceberg.

Islam goes more in depth when you begin to read about “Hadith” which are recollections from
the prophets sayings.

Islam has an impact on health, it can affect somebody in many different ways. It could be
through spiritual, mental & social health.

One of the main reasons I wrote this book was to clear the misconception of Islam being a
terrorist religion. This is completely untrue and insulting to the main concept of Islam which is
peace. In fact Allah says there is no compulsion in religion (Islam). Allah also says in the quran;
Allah says: “Whosoever kills an innocent human being, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind,
and whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind”
The most heartwarming Quran verses that I would like to share with you are:

“ But perhaps you hate a thing and it is better for you, and perhaps you like a thing and it is bad
for you, And Allah knows, while you know not. ” (2;216)

“ Does man think that he will be left neglected? ” (75:36)

“ And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where
he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah
will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent. ” (65:2-3)

“ O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, Who created you,
proportioned you, and balanced you? In whatever form He willed has He assembled you. No!
But you deny the Recompense. ” (82:6-9)
