Intanet and Extranet Advantages and Disadvantages

Introduction: - This project paper is written on the topic “Intranet and Extranet”,
the purpose of
writing this paper is to define the difference between these two terms and where
and how they
are used within organization’s network, what are the advantages and
disadvantages of “Intranet
and Extranet”.

Intranet and Extranet

Intranet is kind of computer network which is used by the businesses to work

effectively and
efficiently by using the internet protocols. Some time the Intranet is used in
contrast to the
internet because Intranet network use the internet, but it is only accessible to
the inside the
members of organizations. The Intranet network is private network which is
highly secured and
safe; it has the firewall so it cannot be accessed by the external people.
Intranet uses the highly standardized hardware and software to insure the proper
working
of the network, like Ethernet, WI-Fi, TCP/IP. Intranet enables people inside
organization share
information easily and timely.

The other term related to Intranet is Extranet, it is also kind of network like
Intranet but here
your business is connected with external people like your suppliers, vendors,
partners, customers
or other businesses. Extranet is private network uses the public
telecommunication system to
securely share information.

Applications of Intranet and Extranet

• Communication and collaboration: Intranet and Extranet offers the companies

to
share information with in network very quickly and reliably, it helps business to
have
discussions with employees where ever they are in world. These two networks
also play
very significant role in the calendaring of the activities of employees.
• Business Operations and Management: It helps the organizations to access the
important data to do their operations. The corporate data is also accessed
through these
kinds of networks.

Web Publishing: It is used typically start by publishing web pages about company
events, health and
safety policies, and staff newsletters. Popular applications follow, such as forms
to reclaim expenses
or request holidays. All these help eliminate paperwork and speed up workflows.
Extranets take
this process a step further, by providing access to people who work for different
organizations. For
example, a company could provide access to a supplier for online ordering, order
tracking and inventory
management. Instead of sending information to suppliers, it lets them fetch it on
a self-service basis.
Another example would be a hospital providing local GPs with access to a
booking system so they can
make appointments for their patients.

An Extranet should be more efficient because everyone has access to the same
data in the same
format. Because all Extranet communications can be encrypted over a VPN, it
should also be
more secure than sending data over the public internet.

Intranet Infrastructure

Mail/News Server

Users

This is typical infrastructure of the Intranet network, the components of the

Intranet network are
very crucial for the efficiency of the network.

• FTP server: file transfer protocol server is being used within network to
transfer file
quickly and safely over the internet. Distinct Intranet Servers, which includes
FTP
Server, TFTP, LPD, BOOTP and NFS, bring quality server power to your network
with
no additional hardware investment. These servers allow you to make use of your
PCs to
share important services among your users. You can exchange files with the
advanced
Distinct FTP Server, share printers with LPD, share files, folders and applications
with
NFS, facilitate network configuration with BOOTP and more. All these servers
have an
administrator login feature to protect your network setup from internal hackers.
• External web server:- outside organization some people are hired to maintain
your
website or, the server store the all data of your network as per the requirements
of clients
the hardware is also adjusted. This is outsourced because it has benefits it has
low costs,

remote backup, security etc.

• Mail Server: A mail server is a computer that serves as an electronic post
office for

email. Mail exchanged across networks is passed between mail servers that run
specially designed software.
DBMS: database management system like ERP is used to manage and store data
within
organization.

This is the infrastructure of the Intranet and the Extranet infrastructure is like
same
Intranet but there two intranets are connected of two businesses or may be
many
Intranets are linked together to perform certain tasks for business.

Advantages and disadvantages of Intranet and Extranet

Disadvantages
• Security issues: There are securities issues in implementing the kinds of
networks in organization, your password and ID may be used illegally.
• Dependence on computer: The Dependency increases as we moves towards
such
kind of paperless networking, people will start depending on computer which
may
affect negatively on the performance of the employees in way that they do not
take work as serious as they were taking before such network.
• Time: Time is needed for the training of the employees to use new tools of

network.

Advantages

• Improve communications: This is one the reward of these two types

of networks that is improves the communication, because through this
network the people within department, and also can easily communicate
even with outside departments which all are linked.
• Faster and fewer mistakes: These two networks increase the speed
of every transaction to be complete and there are fewer chances of
mistakes to occur.
• Improves Customer Service: these two networks help organizations to
build the strong relationship with the customers by quick responses to
their demands and queries.

Difference between the Intranet and Extranet

Intranets network with applications of internet in it the network is only

accessible to the
authorize members of within organization, they have the access through the
unique ID and
passwords, so Intranets lemmatized to the within members of organization but
organization
has presence on the internet and every member has access to internet is well.
Extranet is
further application of Intranet in which external bodies are also made part of
your organization
Network to share some part of information with them to increase efficiency and
reduce cost of
the business, Extranet is used when an organization do the business to business
transactions,
Extranet is basically the link of intranets, one Intranet will be of organization
itself and others
may be of customers, suppliers, partners, distributors etc. The secure protocols
will be used to
connect the intranets.

Conclusion

Conclusion is that today we are living in the era of technology where everybody
wants
to save time and save money, one of the goal of every organization is to be cost
leader
in the market to reduce cost as much as they can do, organizations can reduce
cost by
using these networks ”Intranet and Extranet” because these networks enable
organization
to have quick links with suppliers, customers, employees which ultimately
increase the
performance of organization, factor of inefficiency marginally reduces, so
through these
networks organizations can easily and quickly response to the customers, and it
is also
very important for an organization to have very secure access to data of the
organization
for that these networks are perfect option. These two types of networks mostly
used and
have many advantages in the today technological era, it is very much important
for an
organization to implement these kinds of networks.

Difference Between Internet And Intranet
April 6, 2016 9 Comments

Most of us get
confused between the terms Internet and Intranet. Although there exist a lot
of disparity between them, one of the differences is that the Internet is open
to all and can be accessed by everyone whereas, Intranet requires
authenticated login as an organization privately owns it.

As the internet is open for all, there was a need to develop a network which
would specifically work for a certain range like within an organization or
private community, school, college, university, etcetera. This is the reason
the terms intranet and extranet were coined. Intranet provides security and
privacy within a network of a specific group of people.

Definition Of Internet

The Internet is a global network that establishes a connection and provides

transmission between various computers. It uses both wired and wireless
mode of communication to send and receive any information such as data,
audio, video, etcetera. Here, data travels through “fiber optic cables”, which
are owned by telephone companies. The initial idea of the internet was
introduced by the US Defence Organization ARPA (Advanced Research
Projects Agency) in the late 1960s.
Internet is not only a magnificent network, applications or programs that the
internet users can use or some document or resources which are available
over the internet instead it is comprised of the several different elements
shown below.

 A community of people capable of using and developing the network.

 Collection of resources that can be accessed from these networks.

 Setup assisting collaboration among the several members of the research

and educational communities around the globe.

 Standards and protocols for the proper functioning of the network.

Nowadays, everyone uses the Internet for acquiring information,

communication, and transferring data over the network. It is a public
network using which computers can connect and relay to each other. It
provides an excellent source of information to the user.

Working of the Internet

The Internet is a network created by the interconnection of a large number

of computer networks which is not owned by an entity. There is no central
administration to the internet, any person in the world can join it. This entire
network of networks works through following some standards and rules (i.e.,
protocols). TCP/IP protocol is the main impelling agent for the internet used
by the connected networks along with the other protocols like HTTP, FTP and
SMTP. There are several other protocols and application which we have been
using since the evolution of the internet such as Telnet, FTP (File Transfer
Protocol), Internet Relay Chat, Gopher, Usenet News, WWW(World Wide
Web).

Now, as it is mentioned above that the Internet is a public or generic

network then who is responsible for enforcing the standards for the internet.
Let’s find out how these standards are defined and enforced. There are some
non-profitable organization created in order to bind the various activities
happening on the internet such as IAB (Internet Architecture
Board), IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), and IESG (Internet
Engineering Steering Group). Each of these organization has a well-
defined goal. However, RFC (Request For Comments) is responsible for the
actual development of new standards which is conducted by working groups
authorized by IETF.
Definition Of Intranet

An intranet is a part of the Internet that is privately owned by an

organization. It connects all the computers together and provides access to
files and folders within that specific network. It has a firewall surrounding
the system to avoid the unauthorized user from accessing the network. Only
authorized users have permission to access the network.

Moreover, Intranet is used for connecting computers and transmitting data,

files or documents within the firm. It is a secure way to share the details,
materials, and folders as the network are highly secured and restricted
within the organization. It renders various services such as email, search,
data storage, etc.

Working of an Intranet

However, an intranet is a private computer network but it uses internet

protocols, network connectivity and possibly the public telecommunication
system to access and share the organization’s information and operations
securely with its staff.

It utilizes the same client-server model running on the TCP/IP protocol suite,
similar to the internet. Information within an organization can be retrieved
through browsers which do not depend on the platform. It could also work
without installing special softwares on the client machines.

Firewall

A Firewall plays an important role in the functioning of a network. Intranet

requires the firewall to filter out the unwanted elements to the servers and
networks. It is useful in protecting our network from external intruders.

Features of a firewall

 Protect local systems.

 Network-based security threats can also be eliminated.

 Provision of secured and controlled access to the internet.

 Provide restricted and controlled access from the internet to local servers.
Key Differences Between Internet and Intranet

1. The Internet provides unlimited information which can be viewed by

everyone whereas, in Intranet, data circulates within the organization.
2. The Internet provides access to everyone. As against, intranet permits
authenticate users only to access it.

3. An intranet is a private network that belongs to a firm or an institution. On

the contrary, the Internet is not owned by any single or multiple organization.

4. The Internet is available to all while, Intranet is restricted.

5. An intranet is safer as compared to the Internet.

Diagrammatic Explanation

The below-given diagram shows the relationship between the internet,

intranet and extranet. Intranet comes at the lowest level, and which is
covered by the extranet while these both come under the internet. Let’s take
the example of an organization to understand it in a better way. An intranet
is created by a private organization which provide access to the organization
resources to the staff of that organization only.
While the extranet is a
combination of a public and private network where not only employees of
the company have access to the data but trusted third party is also allowed
to access the company’s data. At last, the internet permits every user of the
world wide web to access and share the public data from anywhere and
anytime.

Similarities Between Internet and Intranet

1. Both Internet and Intranet can be accessed using a browser.

2. They use Internet Protocols for transferring data.

3. Both of them are used to share information with the users over the network.

Conclusion

Hence, we conclude that both the Internet and Intranet have some similar
aspects and dissimilarities as well. The Internet is a collection of various
LAN, MAN, and WAN whereas, Intranet mostly is a LAN, MAN or WAN.
Furthermore, an intranet is safer as compared to the Internet since the user
login keeps updating at regular intervals and it confines to an organization.
