PHILOSOPHY AND PRINCIPLES OF EDUCATIONAL

LEADERSHIP

School leaders can no longer serve as simple managers

of the school. They must be transformational leaders

where they build and unify a group towards a common

goal.(Kotter, 2001).

Together with the teachers and community, they have to achieve the goals they set for the

better learning and brighter future if young children. And they must be the one who will

initiate in looking after the rules and guidelines they’ve set in the school.

School leaders must serve as the instructional leader of the school by assisting teachers with

implementation of the curriculum and serving as the lead learner. Administrators should

ensure the teachers are using a backward design method for the curriculum, which requires

teachers to use data and the Common Core Standards to first establish what students need

to know, then plan assessments and lessons to get them to that point (Wiggins & McTighe,

2005).

As the school leader, you have to lead the process, and ensure teachers are continually

reviewing instructional strategies to support student learning.

One of the most important aspects of a school leader’s job is to facilitate the change process.

School leaders must continually seek ways to improve their processes in order to push the

performance levels of students even higher. They must allow teachers to be a part of the data

process, which will identify areas where change is needed, and then implement and monitor

the action plan to make this change.

It is administrator’s job to create a culture of collaborative inquiry within in the school

where teachers will work together to implement new instructional strategies to improve

student learning and also the status of the school.

It is very important to hear the

voices of the teacher because they

will serve as the speaker of the

children, they are the ones who

know the needs of the young

children not only in learning but

also in other aspects which they

should gain from the school.

For many students, the school is the

safest place for them. It is an administrator’s job to ensure that the school environment is

safe and secure.

Well-maintained facilities produce a positive learning environment for students and a

positive image of the school for the community. School leaders must also take care to ensure

that the school culture is positive, making it a place people want to teach and learn. The

school should feel like a small community where everyone is a contributing member to its

success.
1. Personal Courage

In order to create a positive educational environment, school head must be

willing to stand up against policies that they feel are not helpful for their

students, rising against both local, state and national interests as needed.

2. Public Interest Ahead of Self

 What is best for students and staff must be placed ahead of the needs of the individual

leader. In this case the public interest is understood to be the interest of the school,

community, and the stakeholders therein, their opinions and needs should always

precede the self-interests of the school leader.

3. Self Control, Self Discipline and Integrity

 All types of leadership essentially include these three traits in order to be considered

ethical . Followers in the wider community look to leaders in all capacities, and as

such it’s necessary for leaders to be a positive role model and force in the lives of the

stakeholders. Relationships between leaders and followers should not rely too heavily

on trust, but rather should be built on mutual respect and ethical actions

4.Task and Employee Centeredness

 School leaders must create a foundation of success that draws from the strengths of

the teachers and staff who interact with students. Successful school leaders focus on

both the needs of students and the needs of staff when they make decisions. The key

is balancing energy between the current task while also creating unity by building on

the varied needs of students and teachers.

5.Recognizing Talent

 Ethical leaders recognize the talent of their followers. This means that administrators

identify both staff and students who display the qualities of excellence and then go on

to recognize and promote those individuals in ways that create goodwill among all of
the members of the school community. The other side of recognizing talent is

maximizing it – so placing people where they’re talents care most useful to everyone.

This affords opportunities to both individuals and to the organization as a whole.

6. Requiring High Ethics From Everyone

 Administrators need not only concern themselves with their own ethical standards

but also with the ethical standards of others in their organization. That includes not

only teachers and staff, but extends to students and parents. These standards must be

communicated clearly and enforced without exception in order to be effective.

7. Sensitivity and Understanding

 This applies to the political, social and economic environment of the stakeholders in

the school settings. Sensitivity and understanding are necessary in order to practice

equity among members of the school community. One of the most challenging areas

of ethical picture, this practice must be implemented through educational as well as

institutional policies.

8. Inclusiveness

 A sense of belonging is key to gaining trust within an organization, and trust a driving

factor in success in any context but most especially within the educational context.

Inclusiveness requires that all stakeholders be brought into process of making and

implementing decisions. Consideration of and respect for members of the

organization has been shown to motivate followers and lift morale, thereby increasing

school performance and effectiveness.
