DIFFERENT STROKES OF TCS FOLKS

In India we usually say that “Cricket is not just a game, it is like a religion” this cli-
ché best describes what the game means to our country. This has been the mantra
in the hearts and minds of every youngster in India, be it in Mumbai or Chennai.
Every kid has grown up admiring cricket and its players. In TCS too cricket is
spreading its glazing aura every year and with lots of new comers. March 2016
came up with Cricketing fever among the Gandhinagar TCSer’s where 48 teams
took participate in the tournament and selection of teams has been done on the first
come and first serve basis. There are around 60 cricket teams in TCS Gandhinagar.
The tournament was a great success where 8 best teams were qualified in Quarterfi-
nals by their outstanding performances in 20-20 battle. Tournament is organized
by TCS and managed by TASC member.

THE GREAT JOURNEY BEGAN…
On 6th Nov 2015, For the first time the groups were divided as per international
standards by giving seeding’s to the top players. Each group had One Seeded
player and equal number of participants in order to provide fair chance to all.

We saw some thrilling matches in the all the rounds played. Practicing day and
night; waiting for the email to know their opponent, became a part of their daily
BAU. People witnessed some great matches in Group stages of the tournament.

The ultimate day came – Table Tennis FINALS. All the sweat and blood which
went into the weekend practice for long hours was now to be put into use. Crowd
emerged in huge numbers to support their favorites. Advait Bhatt being the favor-
ite and Number 1 Seeded, played like a champ to win 3-0 over Chirag Gandhi.
However when it came to Men’s doubles category, Anuj Tyagi and Chirag Gandhi
ensured that they are giving due respect to their Number 1 seeding in the tourna-
ment and played pretty solid to beat Advait Bhatt/Shivam Batra(who were seeded
2)by 3-1. Same happened in Mixed Doubles where Vrunjal Mehta/Radha Shah
tried to give competition to Anuj Tyagi/Priyanka Prasad but at the end the latter
won comfortably.

SHOOT THE CHAMPION TITLE!
On 13th and 14th of February 2016, TCS Bangalore Volleyball Team participated in "Front
Foot Volleyball Tournament" - The Inter Corporate Champions Cup. The tournament was
held at St. John's Medical College Sports Complex, Koramangala, Bangalore. TCS’s first
league match was against Wipro. All geared up for the game, TCS put up an awesome show
but, it was their day.

The defense of Wipro seemed stronger than TCS and we lost the game with narrow margin.
After losing the first match, TCS decided to change strategy and played with 2 boosters and
without libero in next match against UTC Goodrich. UTC Goodrich tried hard to get the
game, however; TCS attackers were in full form, and didn't even gave a chance for them to
stay on ground for long and we won against them very easily. Then was the deciding match
with Cisco, The first set started, the attackers from both teams showed their play. But in
front of TCS attack and defense Cisco couldn't stay long, Cisco lost their hold on the game
and we won the match. TCS stood second in our group to qualify for the Champions Cup.

On 14th of February, every player were geared to win the semifinals against Accenture. We
put in our fullest to win the battle, in which scoring every point had been a struggle. Finally,
TCS won the match and was into finals of inter corporate volleyball tournament

Now comes the tournament finals with Wipro. Boosted up with the confidence that they
gained after the win over us in league match, they started in an attacking mode. Wipro play-
ers were extremely good at attacking, but it was not enough for them in front of TCS players
who blocked every smashes and attacked from every possible angles. Audience was
awestruck. With huge ground support for TCS along with our friends from throw ball team
we took sweet revenge against Wipro in the deciding third set. "Yes we made it!" TCS Win-
ners of Champions Cup of Front foot inter corporate volleyball tournament.

KICKS OFF THE GAME!
The most common question one comes across on a Monday morning when colleagues at
office meet is ”How was your weekend?”. Well, the answer usually is mundane but for
the associate trainees at ILP Chennai, it was all talk about fitness and sports in TCS !

On Saturday, 19th March 2016, the ILP trainee associates had all gathered early morning
for "TCS CHN ILP - Tiger 5'z Football Tournament" organised by the ILP HR team. A
unique condensed version of the world's favourite sport, Football. The teams had var-
ied attitudes, each one different from the other and distinguished by a unique name.
There was no dearth for creative expressions.

Event kick started as the first game started at 07:00 AM went on all day long and culmi-
nated to a finale at 05:00 PM. 272 associates including 12 women played with unbridled
enthusiasm with fun forming the corner stone of the entire event. Though the teams dis-
played their competitive team working skills on the ground, there was no denying that
the true leitmotif of the entire event was “Safety and Fun”.

Replicating the current day International T20 world cup, there was a women's football
Exhibition match which happened parallelly along with the men's game.

A Maitree and Fit4Life initiative true to its spirit, the day had ended with each trainee
being charged up, having spent a day worthy of mention !

A two hour flight and we braced ourselves to
land in the most dangerous airport in the world
located at Paro, in Bhutan. It's not a big airport
and airplanes do not have long runways to take
off or land. I was so excited that after deplaning
I went on a picture clicking spree. After collect-
ing my baggage and completing the immigra-
tion formalities I arranged a taxi to take me to
Thimpu which was 60km from Paro airport. A
two hour ride through the most beautiful of
routes and I finally reached Wangchuk hotel
where I checked in and waited killed time by
riding around Thimpu and visiting the city’s
highest point, Buddha Point. Subsequently, I
was paid a visit by Karma Druksel who had got
a podium finish in previous editions of the
Tour of DRAGON.
I crashed early as I had to leave for Bumthang
in the official vehicle by 6.30 am the next day.
The night passed and next day we gathered at
Changlingmathang stadium before heading out
in the vehicle provided by BOC (Bhutan Olym-
pic committee).
The countdown had begun and I was all
charged up..
We were required to travel from Thimpu to
Bhumtang and I was getting a chance to meet
other riders. My new friend Karma Druskel in-
troduced me to riders from Nepal, Austria,
Bhutan itself and other parts of the world.
We finally headed towards Bumthang and
that’s when I faced the first roadblock literally.
To cross the Dochula pass you need a permit
and well, I didn’t have any. After a 2 hour back
-and-forth with the relevant authorities, I final-
ly managed to get the permit and we were on
our way once again. I was using this opportuni-
ty to get a feel of the terrain and the road condi-
tions and the verdict was not very good unfor-
tunately. Due to the road widening work, the
conditions were bad and I knew the ride was
going to be tougher than I had expected. After a
quick lunch, our vehicle slowly trudged for-
ward and we finally reached Bhumtang after a
16 hour bumpy journey. I was exhausted and
wondering what I had got myself into !

Karma and I had checked into hotel Kaila
which was just 1 km far from the start point.
The next day I got up bright and early and
quickly assembled my bike. I was excited to
finally hit the road with my friend karma. As I
pedaled my way through the streets of Bhutan,
the fear disappeared and I was all ready to dis-
cover new roads. We headed towards the race
route and decided to ride a mountain pass
called Kikila, which a 9 km climb with a stiff
gradient in some sections. After riding for a
few hours we came back to our hotel to take a
break after which we headed out again for a
ride with our new friends from Nepal. The
bike handling skill of these riders was amazing
because they were literally doing stunts while
riding at 30-40 Kmph.
While I was gaining new respect for my fellow
riders, horror stories of the race were slowly
bringing the fear factor back. Over dinner, par-
ticipants shared their harrowing experiences
and as I heard about their experiences, injuries
and achievements, my respect for them kept
increasing. I talked to the previous year’s win-
ner (Son of DRAGON Mr. Sonam) who was
not participating this year due to an injury.
Like a true cyclist, he had come to help the par-
ticipants during the race.
The very next day we all assembled at
Chamkar bus stand to ride with a special dig-
nitary – HRH the Prince of BHUTAN. We were
introduced to the Prince who in turn gave us a
wonderful introduction to all things Bhutan.
The site of this introduction was a famous tem-
ple so all of us went and prayed for a success-
ful race. I observed that the Bhutanese people
are a religious people … my friend Karma
would say a silent prayer before sleeping, eat-
ing and of course before pushing the pedal.
The next day we had to ride with prince to a
lovely spring located just 20 km from the
Chamkar bus stand. We gathered at the venue
well before the start time and waited for the
Prince to arrive. He arrived on time and we all
had a pleasant ride. After lunch at the hotel, we
rested for a while and then gathered at the Pal-
ace for the race details briefing.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF THIS SPORT? CHESS BOXING

The 37-year-old Frank Stoldt, former UN-Peacekeeper in Kosovo and Afghanistan, won when his
opponent resigned in chess in the 7th round. After qualifying himself to fight for the title in 2006,
Frank Stoldt went up against the American David Depto in November 2007 in Berlin, to fight for the
first world championship title in the light heavyweight division. More than 800 tickets were sold for
the event at the Tape Club in Berlin and made it the biggest chessboxing title fights by then. Frank
Stoldt defeated Depto in the 7th round, and thereby cemented Berlin’s status as the leading city in the
chessboxing world becoming the first German world champion.

The Chessboxing Family Grows

Chessboxing first received credit from the international Chess Federation FIDE, in April 2008. At the
same time, the chessboxing community began to grow globally at an even faster rate. In 2008,
chessboxing clubs were founded in London and Krasnoyarsk. Created in 2009, the Los Angeles
Chessboxing Club was the first of its kind in the United States and was directly followed by the New
York Chessboxing Club in 2010. In 2011, the first international club matchup took place with Berlin
and London in the ring—London came out the winner with 2:1 won bouts.

Chessboxing a World Sport

In 2011, the WCBO and with it the global chessboxing community made the biggest leap forward in its
development to date with the foundation of the Chessboxing Organisation of India and its expansion
in Asia, including also Chessboxing China and the Chessboxing Organisation of Iran which were
founded in 2012. The Chess Boxing Global Marketing CBGM GmbH—called Chess Boxing Global, CBG
—was founded, that as of May 2013, is responsible for organising all of the professional chessboxing
fights worldwide and above all, for the organisation of the Chess Boxing World Championships.

Chessboxing in India
The Chess Boxing Organisation India was founded in 2011 by kickboxing official and former Indian
kickboxing and karate champion Montu Das.

Particular requirements and training
A chessboxer must have strong skills in both chess and boxing in order to be permitted to com-
pete in a professional chessboxing fight. The current minimum requirements to fight in a Chess
Boxing Global event include an Elo rating of 1600 and a record of at least 50 amateur bouts fought
in boxing or another similar martial arts. One deciding factor in chessboxing is that the fighters
have to mainly train in speed chess, seeing as the requirements in speed chess are different than
those in a classical game of chess. However, chessboxing is not only the ability to master both
sports but above all, being able to withstand the constant switch from a full contact sport to a
thinking sport, round after round. After three minutes of boxing, pulses are racing, yet the oppo-
nents have to face each other at the chessboard barely having taken a break, and have to then per-
form with calm and think tactically. This switch becomes increasingly hard for the athlete as the
fight goes on and he becomes tired.
In order to train these skills, a specialised chessboxing training is used, in which physical interval
training forms are combined with blitz or speed chess games. Thereby the fighters adapt the
rhythm of a chessboxing bout. For instance exercises like "track chess" and "stair chess" in which
training partners will play an 18-minute game of speed chess over six rounds with intensive run-
ning exercises in between e.g. 400m sprints or stair sprints. Other common methods of training
combine speed chess games with strength exercises such as push-ups. The classic chessboxing
training is a box sparring combined with a game of speed chess.
