CHAPTER I
Introduction

As the world grows into technologically sophisticated, there is a great demand

for the hottest electronic gadgets. These are cellphones, laptop, camera, MP3 player,

and several cool electronic gadgets. Cellphones support a wide variety of other services

such as text messaging, multimedia messaging, email, internet access, Bluetooth,

business applications, games, photography and calendaring among other services.

Kahari (2013) stressed that cellphone is a very important tool for study as most

of the respondents used their phones for study purposes. Cellphones are increasingly

one of the most popular information access devices and what stands out from the study

is the high use of interactive, multi user functions which can at times be disruptive or

beneficial during study. In essence, the study revealed that cellphones are beneficial for

learning but learners have a tendency to abuse them. The presence of cellphones

presents a host of options and challenges for today’s students. 1

Similarly, Coughlan (2015) emphasized that students are always busy sending

and receiving messages while studying. As a result, they got lower score in the test and

were less effective at tasks such as note taking. This generation of “voracious texters”

might be affected by so many online destructions. When students did not use mobiles,

they were better at being able to recall information. With the exam season under way,

there are family arguments about whether teenagers really can learn at the same time as

using several online gadgets. 2

In addition he said, how well young people could carry out a task, such as

watching a lecture on a video and then taking notes and answering questions, while

facing a series of interruptions on their internet- connected mobile phones. Mobile and
portable devices are now such as a persuasive part of young people’s how a student

could really study at the same time as interacting online.

Candidly, iPod and MP3 players are great gadgets when studying while

listening to music. It would be great if the music are listening is conductive to studying

and it sets a great mood for learners. It is not too loud that it can destruct concentration.

Mobile phones are often described as a major destruction for students because of text

messaging. However, it can also help them with their schedules and let them store

reminders on their school projects and lessons. Noise cancelling headphones are very

important when a student want to study but people in your dorm room keeps on chatting

with each other or listening to loud music. With this headphone you can cancel out the

noise and focus on studying.3

Technology has been found to have its negative impact on academic

performance on most of children. There are many technological gadgets to which

children are addicted. They waste their valuable time on these silly gadgets without

worrying about the studies. This is resulting in their poor academic performance.

This is one of the biggest problems created by growing technology. Children

are future of our country, our world. The sad thing is that due to increasing technology,

children have been found going away from their moral values. Internet is working as

curse for children’s character. Rather than using internet in productive manner, children

use it as source of adult content. 4

It was observed that students nowadays are spent much time on electronic

gadgets which affect the study habits and academic performance. Due to the upgrade

of these gadgets in entertainment, students most likely focus on what entertains them

on what may help them in their studies or for the good of their knowledge. Students
often spend more time on using gadgets than studying or doing different types of

physical and spiritual activities. Students usually use gadgets for media and social

interactions in particular Facebook. Twitter, and other sorts of social networks. Gadgets

affects us in various sort of ways, being one of those effects is how it affects students

and their academics. Gadgets, from simple tools powered by electricity such as light

bulbs involved to phones and tablets. These gadgets may improve or it may be a

destruction and a reason to fail a student’s studies or grades. 5

This scenario motivated the researchers to conduct a study on the effects of

sophisticated gadgets to the student’s study habits.

RELATED STUDIES AND RELATED LITERATURE

RELATED STUDIES
The Effects of Technology on Students Academic Performance

Most school systems have technology standards that all students must attain

recitative points throughout their education. Educations standards are guidelines that

define the knowledge and skills students should possess during certain points

throughout an academic year. And while the standards differ, the expectation that

today’s student need to become more familiar with technology does not. In fact, many

school systems offer country- wide teacher training for effective ways to implement the

use of various gadgets such as Smart Boards, Memos, and Interactive Whiteboards.1

The Effects of Gadgets in Students Performances Essay

Technology has always been advancing throughout the years. It made a big

impact on people especially on lifestyles. One of the many things that are affected in

the society; having been a common source of information and entertainment.

In our present generation, students are obsessed in using Gadgets. They usually

want to buy the latest release of these Gadgets to satisfy their desires in terms of

entertainment and getting the newest of the new. As a result, students tend to involve

gadgets in their everyday lives including in their studies. Students tend to use up more

time in using gadgets than on studying. These apparently affect the student’s studying

habits and academic performance.

In today’s modern age gadgets has become a way of life. Gadgets nowadays are

a basic need for everyday life style. It helps a lot by doing things easier and faster.

Gadgets help students a lot by doing their projects more productive and progressive. It
is a small thing that anyone could have. Having a gadget may help one’s be more

productive and intellectual. Nowadays, poor and rich have gadgets like cellphones. A

cell phone is a wireless gadget that most people these days communicate with. Gadgets

nowadays are a basic need for a student. Gadgets gave a big impact into the history of

humanity because of its use. The history of gadgets spans as far as back as humanity

itself - since hominids began creating tools to make their lives easier. Humans have

always created devices and appliances with specific practical purposes that were

initially thought of as novelties, due to unfamiliarity with and initial unwillingness to

accept the technology. Today, industry has augmented the creation of new gadgets.

This study aims to know how gadgets affect the studies of the 4th year students

of LJLC. This study will show the researcher how the gadgets can affects the studies of

the 4th year students of LJLC as said in the title. As we know, gadgets are now part of

our daily basis. Dealing with the impacts of Modern Gadgets on our Lives whether we

like it or not, electric appliances and gadgets have occupied a major position in our day

to day lives. Though they were invented to make life better for us in the first place, it is

an undeniable fact that many of the gadgets have a negative influence upon the quality

of our lives in some ways. As we cannot live without them in this modern world and

they are a necessary evil, we have to find ways to reduce the negative impact of those

modern appliances. A gadget is a device or appliance having a unique purpose and

function. At the same time of invention, a gadget is often way ahead of its peers in terms

of novelty and uniqueness. This is what makes them, so desirable and `cool’!

Gadgets affect the study habit of a student in many aspects. Using gadgets a

student start becoming stupid, dependable, and careless and do all his or her works with

the help of gadgets. He also becomes drowsy and wants to do all his works in shortcut.

In this age of technology no part of life is deprive from the impact it has created on life
pattern and so education is no exception. Education has undergone a revolutionary

change with students being seen with laptops, tabs, and other gadgets.

A negative effect of these gadgets on students can be the fact that they can

become obsessive and the students can neglect everything else, like their social life,

their family and friends. Is not a bad thing to have a computer, but is a bad thing to

spend all your life in front of it pretending that everything else doesn’t exist. Otherwise,

most gadgets have positive effects because they enable us to do things faster and easier

and they are also good when it comes to learning new things and, let’s face it, they

make our life a lot easier.2

Addictions

It is easy to become addicted to gaming, texting, talking on the phone or

socializing online. Some students may attempt to do this in class, which disrupts their

learning, and at home it detracts from study time. Kids putting in long hours on their

gadgets will give less attention to assignments and may be irritable when they are away

from their gadgets. They might also sleep less, which can slow down their thinking the

next day. 3

Effects of Gadgets on Learning

A decreased attention span is one of the negative effects of gadgets. Before

smart phones and tablets were mainstream, the average attention span was about 12

seconds. However, research suggests this has dropped to about eight seconds, which is

a shorter attention span than an average goldfish. If students struggle to concentrate in

class, their grades may suffer.

Research also suggests that people who spend a lot of time on gadgets may be more

easily distracted, meaning it’s harder for them to complete necessary tasks. 4

Some Facts about Tech-gadgets and Services Used by the Present Generation

Mobile/ cellphone

Mobile phone or cellphone is a device that can make and receive telephone calls

over a radio link while moving around a wide geographical area. Besides telephony it

can also provide a variety of other services like text messaging, playing music, e-mail,

internet access, infrared, Bluetooth, business applications, gaming and photography etc.

it was first introduced in 1973 and in 1983 the first mobile phone was commercially

available (Heeks, 2008). From 1990 to 2011, the number of world-wide mobile phone

users grew from 12.4 million to over 6 billion, covering about 87%of the global

population (Saylor, 2012).

Computer/ laptop

Computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a

finite set of erythematic and logical operations. Computer can solve more than one kind

of problem at a particular time as a sequence of operations can be readily changed. A

laptop is a type of computer that can be folded and easily carried out due to its’ small

size and battery support for energy, required to run it. The first laptop was invented in

1979 by British Designer Bill Maggridge. For the laptop producers the year 1989 was

quite successful. Now the laptops are generally used for making programs, storing data,

entertainment (music, videos), accessing net etc. currently the number of computer
users in the world is 900 million to 1 billion i. e. around 80% of the world population

are using or having computers (Woyke, 2012).

Smart Phone

A smartphone, or smart phone, is a type of mobile phone built on a mobile

operating system with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than a

feature phone. In early 2013 worldwide sales of smart phones exceeded those of feature

phones. 5

The Disadvantages of Gadgets on Student

Electronic gadgets offer many advantages to students: greater access to

information, increased opportunities for collaboration independent learning and

enhanced communication. However, the effects of gadgets on students are not always

positive. Overuse of technology through gadgets like smartphones, iPods and video

games may interfere with a student’s attendance, ability and interest in learning. 6

The Impacts of Using Gadgets on Children

Many researchers have studied that children spend average of their time on

different telephone, radio, TV, games, Xbox, iPod and stereo system. [1]. Kids use

gadgets for various purposes like playing games, watching videos, listening songs,

chatting with their friends, browsing different websites. They spend most of their time

in these activities and don’t pay attention to their posture screen brightness, and screen

distance from their eyes which ultimately affect their vision and health.

Starring at electronic screen continuously for long time causes distress [2].kids

suffer various problems like eye irritation or have difficulty to focus fo a while if we

are facing problems to cope with screens, imagine how our child’s eyes must be going

through. In this era, we can keep ourselves or our children away from these devices so
we can try to minimize the impact of these devices on our children. It’s really surprising

a 2 year old baby can and knows how to use a gadget, similar to how a kid knows to

use a feeding bottle. A study has been conducted in USA on kids and result shows 1

out of 3 children can use a tablet or phone before they even talk?

In 2013 daily mail reported that 29% of the toddlers can easily use the gadgets

and remaining 70% are master by primary school age. Really surprising! According to

the USA centers for disease control and prevention, an average child spends about 8

hours a day watching electronic screen. As they are growing older the use of gadgets

also increases. Too much gadgets use can also affect the long-term vision problem [3].

Plus chance of myopia also increases in children when they spend about 8 hours daily

on gadgets. When people use electronic screen, they blink less. On an average a person

blinks about 15 times in a minute. Due to the high attention required while using an

electronic screen, this rate can drop to less than 5 times in a minute. A lot of research

has been done on this type of phenomena. This paper describes a positive and negative

impact of gadgets on children. 7

The Positive Impact of Gadget Use

Improve cognitive skills

Cognitive skills are the ability to process information, reasoning, remembering and

relating objects with other objects. These skills are directly related to memory, and

language. Now a day’s technology helps faster and better development of cognitive

skills in kids. The games which they use to play before whether it’s a puzzle or
scribbling on drawing books everything now can be done on electronic devices. Like

interactive apps, video games, different kinds of challenges and educative programs

available on various kinds of devices. Such product would always improves kid

cognitive skills the modern gadgets help to develop their learning skills faster as they

are more interested in gadgets then books. 8

SUMMARY, FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings and recommendations based on the

data analysed.

Summary

Gadgets have a very wide effect to the students especially in their class

performance. Cellphone is one of the most popular gadgets that students used. In

essence, the study revealed that cellphones are beneficial for learning's but learners

have a tendency to abuse them. The presence of cellphones presents a host of options

and challenges for today’s students.

Some of the students are always busy sending and receiving messages while

studying. As a result, they got lower score in the test and were less effective at task such

as note taking. The students of this generation might be affected by so many online

destruction. It would be better to the students if they did not use mobiles, for them to

recall information about their studies and it would be great if the gadgets that they used

is conductive to studying and it sets a great mood for learners.

Mobile phones are often described as a major destruction to the students because

of texting messages and out of concentration in studies. However, there are advantages

in using mobile phones because it can also help them with their schedules and let them

store reminders on their school projects and lessons.

It was observed that students nowadays are most likely focus on what entertains

them, on what may help them in their studies or for the good of their knowledge and

they often spend more time on using gadgets than studying or doing different types of

physical and spiritual activities. Gadgets such us phones and tablets may improve or it

may be a destruction and a reason to fail a student’s studies or grades.

This study entitled “The Impacts of Gadgets to the Class Performance of Grade 9

Students in Alimsog Integrated School” focuses on effects of gadgets to thee class

performance of Grade 9 students in AIS. It tackles about the discussion on how they

would recover or keep themselves away from being destructed in their study habit.

Technology has made a big impact on people especially on lifestyle because it has

always been advancing throughout the years. In our present generation, students are

obsessed in using gadgets, that’s why students tend to involve gadgets in their everyday

lives including their studies. But it is true that gadgets has an advantages because

nowadays, gadgets are a basic need for everyday life style. It can help us by doing things

easier and faster and it can also help the student by doing their projects more productive

and progressive. You could buy a gadgets whether you are poor or rich like cellphones

because it is just a small thing that anyone could have. But somehow, there are also a

lot of disadvantages to the students using gadget because of using gadgets, a student

starts becoming stupid, dependable, and careless and do all his/her work with the help

of gadgets. Students also becomes drowsy and wants to do all his work in shortcut.

Maybe we don’t think that gadgets have a bad influence or bad effects on students if

they don’t become fanatics when it comes to gadgets.

FINDINGS

This are the answers to the statement of the problem.

1. The researchers found out that gadgets have effects, whether it is a bad and good to

the students’ class performance.

2. The researchers found out that the common gadget applications that students used

which can result to destruction on their study habits are Facebook, YouTube, Google

and Messenger. These are the applications that have high percentage of commonly used

application according to the survey.

3. According to the students, they can keep themselves from being destructed by

gadgets in studying their lessons by managing time and knowing their limits on how

long they can use their gadgets, and choosing an important applications that can be used

in their studies like Dictionary, Google and etc.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The researchers recommends some instructions and suggestions to the following:

1. The school must be improved on being strict or it should implement some rules

regarding bringing of cellphones to school of the students and stick to the punishment

that shall be given to them. Do not tolerate the bad doings of the students because it

also affect the image of the school.

2. The students must practice proper discipline of themselves and learn how to manage

their time properly in using gadgets without affecting their studies and prioritize first

their studies before gadgets.

3. The teachers should be strict to the students and also give punishment to those

students who bring gadgets in school and interrupt their classes because of using
gadgets. And also discuss some effects of gadgets to the students for them to be aware
